News has surfaced that Gary Ross, writer of such films including Seabiscuit, The Tale of Despereaux, Dave and Lassie in the past and writer/director of some others (that we’ll discuss later), is being brought in to re-write the script of Spider-Man 4.
What does this mean for the movie?

On one side, Ross was likely chosen because of his growing relationship with Sony which includes his directing of a Lance Armstrong cycling film and his work on the in-development Tokyo Suckerpunch.
On the other side, Spider-Man 4’s script is getting yet another rewrite meaning there are major issues with it (probably due to what happened in Spider-Man 3). This leaves me wondering what direction the film will take after the last movie and how, or if, it will lead at all into the Venom spinoff movie we’ve heard a lot about.
If you were expecting to hear any official updates as to who the villain(s) may be in the next installment, expect to wait a little longer with this news.
With these rewrites, I hope we get a solid and polished story for the movie. I highly disliked Spidey 3 and this needs return to the form of the first two. However, the difference is that I would like to see more of a real villain this time. We’ve seen far too much of the same formula of “I’m not really a bad guy, science did this to me” villains who redeem themselves at the end.
I wonder what Sam Raimi’s involvement with the script and story is this time around…
Interestingly, the only two movies Ross has directed, Tobey Maguire has starred in: Pleasantville and Seabiscuit which were both good movies. On top of that, they have two in-development films coming up in Tokyo Suckerpunch and The Crusaders. That gives me some hope at least.
What do you think of this fourth installment getting another re-write? Are they just ensuring the quality or is it a big mess?
Spider-Man 4 is scheduled to begin production next year and open May 6, 2011, sharing the summer with other heroes including Thor, Green Lantern and Captain America.

Maybe they could wait till they decide to do a Spider-man 6 and introduce her as Felicia Hardy atleast. And go from there.
No i don`t think there should be a SM6, i think it`s only meant to be 5 movies. Doing 6 movies would twirl the series into a different form.

Sometimes I wish I did… if it’s any consolation though, I did stop reading after the sentences made up of completely random words started to make my head hurt.
So I pretty much only read about 2 lines.
Uuuum, ok they`re probably in this for more than just the money, anyway though. As for the symbiotes, yeah i agree with 404, it`s really the way they write the script, if they had their part alone in SM5 throughout the entire film how would it ultimately cause the trainwreck disaster to approach? They have the full movie to themselves, if they make a great story to carry them off in the movie what makes it so over the corner to bounce to a basket there? And yeah they already used Venom, it`d make no sense not using Carnage, what makes it too much if they even get saved for a movie with the serious finale showdown?

No, you’re not. We have a “regular” here who claims that’s just his “style.” I never read his comments, other than to scan them quickly for anything inappropriate.

With all due respect, theres plenty of storys to be written into a script to as high as they can carry the franchise. Last real report i read was the studio hopes to make 3 more spider-man films which would be 4,5 & 6. Aslong the films do well, they’re gonna make sequels. BTW, who said Carnage was the villain when no villain/villains been confirmed? Id like to see Carnage too, but with Venom by themselves.
Maybe this rewrite will be the good one.
They probably have to rewrite the script b/c in each one of them it involves Parker finding Mary Jane’s corpse in his bedroom, but seriously I have no hope for this film at all anymore…the more I hear the less I care.

Well chrisj i`m pretty much just saying with the way things went between Peter and Mj i don`t think there`s a good way to hold the string much longer.
Anyway, i`m still not gonna force them to do anything, from what i read in the commentary on these sites i see myself in the mirror and learn that there`s nothing compelling or deceiving worth to be told. I might not be done with Spiderman, but i`ve lost my spirit to give my opinions on what these next 2 movies should be.
No Carnage…I hate that character..no depth at all..Venom on crack! Let the symbiotes be..SPiderman has too diverse a rogue’s gallery to waste on the symbiotes again..
I rather have Carnage over some lousy villain like Rhino.

Spider-Man should have a female rival slash anti-heroine who obsessed with him. With the addition of who would be a more bigger challenge..The Scorpion. That I love to see and would be a lot better than SM3 by far.

Im all for them introducing Felicia Hardy and having her become the Black Cat. But whats gonna be the best way to show her get that super serum that gives her all that agility? Scorpion might be good for the main villain. they could also use another badass like Tombstone. He’s one villain with a attitude that could rough spidey up, especially if spidey were to accidently drop him in a vat of chemicals.
Greenknight, symbiotes are NOT a waste of Spiderman`s rogue, they`re awesome villains!!!!!!!!!!!!! What DON`T you like about them, no reasoning for what they do, no careful planning? Venom goes after Spiderman for humiliating him, and Carnage doesn`t just go killing every person he sees, him and Venom have plots together pairing them as a team to make some sort of discretionized goal.villains aren`t created to just go off killing people without any plan, they try and make sense for the types of reasons they shape out their characters in place. Venom and Carnage do NOT suck as villains!! They`re very cool and scary compared to villains like Shocker, Electro, or Vulture, and like I said, there is NO point of changing the way it`s supposed to go, just because they`ve already been used doesn`t mean they don`t need to be used anymore, Also even if it`s dead it still hasn`t been mentioned that it`s dead so what`re they gonna do with doc. connors symbiote without having an actual symbiote character to make the movies look comfortable? So what don`t you see about that? I`m sorry, but treating the symbiotes like they mean nothing to the series and moving on to other villains when Peter has just had a huge battle is going to ruin the enhancement of making a real and sensitively developed story from what Peter has learned as being a superhero. Why are people jumping to conclusions about who the villain/villains gonna be? No villain has been confirmed yet!
Because we as fans are voicing our opinions to give the filmmakers an idea which character they want to see from the Spider-Man universe make his or her way into this film.
Its true that nothing official has come but the purpose of these kind of films is to make us the fans happy. As you said well just have to wait and see.
i would like to see a spiderman vs daredevil movie or have both heroes team up together,this has happened many times in the marvel comics during the 60’s & 70’s also spiderman teams up wolverine is another cool idea. but please do not show any more sad or sentimental scenes with peter parker crying/sobbing because this kills the whole movie and makes it look like a soap opera.
You’re going to have a LONG LONG wait for a Spider-Man vs. Daredevil movie, Michael. Sony owns the rights to Spidey and Fox has the rights to DD.
greenknight, they`re just making a point, not doing any more symbiotes and zooming out of it that fast would make everything look weird, Spiderman`s rogue villains are very interesting but giving up on them this early is like already putting in the hardest event in a competetion and going back to easier events, it just doesn`t turn out right. Look i`m sorry, but when you`re saying to do no more venom and carnage for later flicks you`re just not being reasonable, you`re just saying that because you can`t stand going back to something you don`t let the lightbulb on top of your head pop up. And 404 is right, it`s mainly the way they write it, you don`t know how it can end up when you still haven`t went there yet.
Looking back at Spider-man 3 and hearing how bad people make it to be, id have to give my opinion that the studio shouldnt put Venom in the film in the first place. We always knew Raimi would have Harry involved somehow and Sandman as the 2nd villain. I hate to say it, but it i think we fans have ourselves to blame and should of waited to use venom for a film on his own or with Carnage. Im sayin this because one of my friends mentioned how the studio pressured Raimi to have venom in the film due to Fan’s request.
Personally i think spidey 3 ruined the presentation of venom….they used a lame actor and ‘kill’ him…considering that venom is spidey’s biggest foe/threat that was the dumbest move ever. They need to bring venom back and do him right, also using an actor sufficent of brocks muscle bound appearance. And to go a bit off topic and get my idea out, since marvel and dc are comin out with movies left and right, I think top cow should get in on the movie business and make movies of witchblade, the darkness, and cyber force.
Feezie. i agree with ya about how they should of had someone else to play Eddie Brock that would make Venom more bulked up. Unlike others, i read it was the studio’s call to have Venom in the film due to fan’s request.
Ok, i hear all types of rumblings from everywhere, but there`s a long story i have about different codifications of rumors, which still keeps me from letting my opinions out for these next 2. I hear from different places that he never liked Venom or that he didn`t understand him which i figured he wouldn`t mind him if he did but either way i`m still not going to pressure them because there`s nothing under the same symbol with price that shows a type of organized way to mend myself, and when even hearing that they`re happy with how they ended his story which condenses into direction of people being happy he`ll do it his way just tells me something i should be aware of.
Anyway, i just wanted to make that clear.
Does anyone remember Kraven’s last hunt? Kraven hunting spiderman, burying him alive, impersonating him, framing him… meanwhile, Spidey’s friends have no clue why he’s now a villian (Ah Kraven!) Also Vermin could be replaced with The Lizard!!!!
I liked how Kraven was first fighting with The Punisher over the life of Spider-man while he was the Man-Spider in the 90’s animated series. Then later the two worked together to bring the Man-Spider down long enough to get his shot to be human again. If they used the Lizard, i could see how easy Kraven can be used as a 2nd villain for Spidey to fight with while at the same time dealing with the Lizard and protecting him from Kraven.
