Back in March, Spider-Man 4 got its official release date of May 6, 2011, two weeks before the release of Thor. With the movie officially confirmed and scheduled, we were ready to start hearing the updates on the movie start flowing in. It quickly did as a few days later, director Sam Raimi went on record saying he really wanted Dunst to reprise her role in Spidey 4 and that the movie would be incomplete without her as Mary Jane:

“I can’t imagine making a ‘Spider-Man’ movie without Kirsten… Of course it can be done because Spider Man has existed without the character of Mary-Jane but she’s one of my favorite parts and it would be a shame not to have her in the picture. I’m hoping she’ll be in it and I’m planning on having a story with her in it.”

That’s not all the Spidey news that came from the busy month of March. Just over a week after the Kirsten Dunst discussion, Raimi revealed the issues surrounding Spider-Man 3 and its rather negative feedback compared to the earlier installments. He talked about how he had very restricted control over the last film, especially with regards to the Venom character. The good news that came from the discussion was that we’ll apparently be getting a return to form where Raimi truly has the director reigns and hopefully we’ll get a film on par with the first two of the series.

In April, Raimi followed up on his word about his desire of Dunst to return and in a group interview, revealed that he was set to meet with Kirsten Dunst and discuss her involvement with the fourth installment. Not much was heard on that front until last week where Raimi spoke with MTV about the status of the film and of Kirsten Dunst returning:

“Kirsten? I have talked with her, and she’s very excited about the possibility of it… I think I’m going to have to read the screenplay and make sure everything we’ve talked about is working, before I could honestly tell you absolutely how [Dunst’s possible return] would go.”

From the interview, it seems that Dunst would be willing to return but that it’s up to the director and the script. We know Raimi wants her back as evidenced by his previous chats on the subject and as for the script, Raimi also said in that MTV interview that it’s currently being worked on by David Lindsay-Abaire and that the first draft should be done in four weeks time.

What do you think of Mary Jane and Morbius in Spider-Man 4?
