The ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot’s Villain is The Lizard

spider man reboot lizard The Spider Man Reboots Villain is The Lizard

Somewhere, Dylan Baker is weeping. On Monday, Sony announced that Rhys Ifans had been cast as the villain in their Spider-Man reboot – but they decided not to reveal who exactly he’d be playing.  The temptation to sit back and watch as fans speculated over the possibilities probably proved to be too strong.

As it turns out, we didn’t have to wait that long for an answer. The Wrap has confirmed that Ifans will play Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard in director Marc Webb‘s 3D reinvention of Spider-Man. While The Lizard was mentioned as a potential adversary back in June, recent rumors suggested that Venom or Electro were candidates as well.

However, there was one particular quote from Webb that seemed to tip the scales in The Lizard’s favor:

“What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

While I’m still excited about Ifans’ participation, I’ll admit that I have mixed feelings about this. Rumors persist that the Spider-Man reboot is actually set in college, not high school. The inclusion of Connors supports this – unless they’ve altered his origin as a college professor for the film. I’m not totally against them changing Connor’s profession (the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon revamped it while preserving Parker and Connors’ relationship), but I think I would take issue with Parker becoming Spider-Man in college rather than high school.

The other potential downside to this is that a Spider-Man vs. The Lizard story would have had so much more impact if they’d introduced the Connors character before turning him into a villain. Sam Raimi had the right idea by giving Connors a supporting role in Spider-Man 2 & 3 and leaving the door open for an appearance from The Lizard in subsequent films.

Ifans is a terrific actor and I’m optimistic about Andrew Garfield as Spidey as well, but in my opinion there’s just no way this showdown is going to have the same weight to it that a Tobey Maguire/Dylan Baker face-off would have had.

Rhys Ifans will play The Lizard in Sony's 'Spider-Man' reboot.

Also, is this not a total slap in the face to Raimi and co.? Didn’t the studio tell him he wasn’t allowed to use The Lizard in Spider-Man 4 because they wanted a villain with a human face? Seems like a really expensive and time consuming way to wind up right back where you started (if those reports were indeed true).

Here’s my biggest issue with this, though – from the beginning we’ve been promised that this reboot will be a completely different take on Spider-Man mythology and have little in common with Raimi’s films. However, a story about a guy who acts as a mentor to Peter turning into his enemy is ground that has already been well-covered in the first two Spider-Man movies. When they tried to give us another sympathetic villain with The Sandman in Spider-Man 3, it just felt like we’d already been there and done that.

At the moment, this seems less like the breaking of new ground and more like a variation on the same old theme. Hopefully, I’m wrong and they’ve got a few tricks up their sleeve that will help the new Spider-Man stand on its own. If you ask me, not enough time has passed for them to use the same template Raimi already utilized to great effect.

  1. Totally excited for this. Connors is one of my favorite Spidey characters. :)

  2. Love to see the lizard on the big screen but it’s the same basis of a story as the first and second films.

  3. No!!! Why? I cant believe this! I was sure it would be electro! Dammit. Oh well the lizards cool…

  4. The Lizard has always been one of my favorite villains. Can’t wait to see him on the big screen.

  5. It seems like a new version of Raimi’s vision. Each time their is new news about this film, the less and less I want to see it. I actually had some type of hope when they announced they will reboot it. But after they cast Garfield as Spidey that destroyed all hopes I had, now this…. SMH… Can’t wait til Marvel gets the rights back to all their properties… -_-

  6. wow really? i really don’t like this.

  7. I totally agree with the sentiment of this article – nicely put. I hadn’t heard Peter would be in college for the reboot. Maybe they aren’t going to do an origin, similar to the Hulk reboot.

Man, Sony is going to make it harder and harder to not make comparisons to the Raimi Spidey and this new one, not to mention the supporting characters (like Connors). I so wish Raimi was able to the Lizard.

  8. I have a lot of mixed feelings about this. I want to see this, but at the same time don’t because this IS definitely a total slap in the face to Raimi & Dylan Baker. I feel horrible for them both! And Raimi is one of my all time favorite directors!

  9. So there will only be one villain in this?

    • probably. unless they throw kraven in or something

      • Thanks. Id like them to throw in electro somewhere in there set him up for the sequel…rhys CAN pull the lizard though, know that i think of it,i can imagine him transforming and all lol!

  10. wtf. their problem with tobey: too old. so they hire a 28 year old to replace him o_O. their problem with spidey 4: timing. so they make the reboot get released the same proposed time frame as that o_O. their problem with the lizard: they wanted a villain with a human face. so they give us…the lizard o_O. death to this movie. i’ve prejudged it, and i’m proud of that.

    • I couldn’t agree with you more. Ifans is a great actor and would make a great villain, but the Lizard really? Dylan Baker is the Lizard nuff said.

  11. I may be excited about this one, as long as there aren’t any long make out or relationship scenes or having to save a damsel in distress, then I am all about this reboot! Tired of watching movies with hero’s having to save some some girl all the time. Nice article, I do agree with the choice for the lizard character.

  12. If baker was cast as Lizard i would have been okay because we were building up to that. I lost all hope

  13. Isn’t Batman’s new villain Killer Croc, or some sort of lizard?
    How awkward. lol

    • Thats not confermed yet.

  14. totally a secondary villain if this going to work they would also need a second or a main villain like electro or hay how about they intro king Pen its not like Dare Devil needs him anytime soon

  15. Finally the lizard I’ve been waitin to see him on the big screen , wish Raimi was still directing this guess I’ll have to wait and see what the teaser trailer looks like hope they stay true to the origin in the comics and don’t try and change things around like they always do spidey needs to be fast agile with alot of smart talkin and always have a way out of every encounter he comes across

  16. I feel bad for Dylan Baker, who played Connors in the other films. I kind of looked forward to seeing him become the Lizard.

    Vic

    • Vic

So did I! So that means that Rhys wont have an arm in the film right? Connors has a missing arm….

      • You know what? Now that you guys mentioned it, Baker was all set to play the Lizard. Woah, what a raw deal there.

    • I feel bad for Baker too, but I was as much excited to see what Raimi would do with the Lizard. Considering his chops in horror movies, he did a great job incorporating that into the Spidey movies.

Scenes like Defoe talking to himself as the Goblin in mirror, or the classic Doc Ock waking on the operation table. I really wanted to see what Raimi would do with the Lizard

  17. Wow. Now I can’t just not see it, I’ll have to lock myself away for however long it’s in theaters. Ugh

  18. This is ridiculous. Man, this movie is going to suck so bad. Nothing against any of the actors, but this whole movie is going to be a disaster. Raimi had the first 2 films set up for the Lizard, and Sony made him use Venom. All of a sudden we have the Lizard in the reboot??? They could have used Electro, Kraven, Scorpion or a number of other villains and not have had the conflict with the previous films. I’m going to say it again, this film is going to be a disaster.

  19. I definitely was looking forward to this movie the first time I heard about it…when it was called Spiderman 4…now we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out…

  20. Wow I’m surprised! Hopefully it makes for a good movie!

  21. Hmmmmm… interesting……..

  22. it would definitely work better if they waited a movie or two to do the lizard, but Im excited non the less. still disapointed though, I was hoping theyd spend 3 movies setting up the sinister six and then give us an epic 4th

  23. I called it when they cast him.

    • Yeah i remember lol ;)

  24. total bs

  25. he looks like an Electro/shocker!!!

  26. I am not shocked, i wonder what The Lizard will do in the movie though

  27. None of this is interesting and to be honest I have no intention of seeing this pile of crap sony is making.

    • Jess..im starting to like you lol…i have ZERO interest in this

  28. Agreed 100% with the article. Why would they do it this way? They should’ve waited on the Lizard and give us something completely different. Electro is very different, even Shocker. Hell, if they wanted to continue on Raimi’s Spider-Man they should’ve done an all Venom movie and set up Carnage for the second. This doesn’t excite me… but I’ll wait to see some footage. It’s all about the footage with this movie… with all comic book movies.

  29. This is so Stupid..first off It pisses me off that they kicked out Tobey and Sam Raimi’s other cast because 1.) They wanted to go with another young actor..ok Fine Sony wanted to go with a younger actor to play a high school Peter Parker..Then they find this dweeb thats like 27 or something when they said they were going to find a teen Peter Parker 2.) Raimi had a great story line to introduce The Lizard the correct way in the 4th Movie and Sony was complaining about this because they wanted Venom to return..and now they are all the sudden bringing in the Villian The Lizard…they dont even have a good storyline line to bring in the Lizard yet..or at least introduce him the correct way. 3.) What the heck..they want Peter Parker to learn to become Spiderman in College this is so stupid and least Raimi had something good to bring out about Spiderman was suppose to be made.

    • Sony was pushing Raimi to use the Lizard for part 4, but Raimi wanted to go with Vulture (the character he was originally gonna use in SM3).
