Hello Marvel Movie fans! (I’m going to avoid using the term “Marvelites”).

With Iron Man 2 kicking off this summer, Thor officially in full production and Captain America secretly in the workings behind the scenes for a summer start, it’s too bad Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man franchise couldn’t get anything going to have their next film out by next summer.

With all of the Marvel movie news headlines breaking daily, there are tons of little news tidbits that don’t make headlines that eager fans may be interested in. Don’t fret, that’s why Screen Rant is here.

Today, we’ll touch on what potential Spider-Man reboot helmer Marc Webb is interested in from the Spidey comics, a potential Peter Parker candidate that will please some but make others go crazy, and we’ll look at why the Spider-Man 4 script may have ended the project.

Ultimate: Spider-Man

At the Golden Globes red carpet last night, Director Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) indicated that he was a fan of the Ultimate Spider-Man Comics, a highly speculated source for the Spider-Man reboot.

In his responses about his involvement and an announcement soon, he kept the atmosphere light and played it coy.

The New Peter Parker

With a new Spider-Man comes a new Peter Parker and rumors are swirling out of control with who could take the career-making role. Some even brought up Twilight star Robert Pattinson simply because he’s Twilight start Rob Pattinson. He’s too old for the role but his ripped young co-star Taylor Lautner isn’t too old. According to our buds at IESB, Spider-Man producers have met with Taylor Lautner but we do not know for what…

If that happened, imagine the cries from those who fear Spider-Man is going straight after the Twilight crowd.

Spider-Man 4′s Story?

Movies Online put up a segment from NY Mag which talked about the problematic script of Spider-Man 4 and potential reason for its downfall. Here’s the snippet they pulled:

“Peter Parker gets over MJ, finds a new girl, falls in love. But: Peter also discovers her father is actually the Vulture, a naughty green guy with wings to be played by John Malkovich. Peter is torn between the love of his new lady and taking down the Vulture. Being a Spandex tight-ass, he decides to take down the Vulture, and kills him.

This patricide goes down poorly with Peter’s new fiancee, and she rejects him. Despondent, Peter decides to abandon his superpowers, and Movie No. 4 ends with Peter Parker throwing away his Spider-Man mask, and audiences wondering if they are watching Superman II.”

If that was the direction Raimi was going, it doesn’t sound too awesome.

What do you think the Spider-Man 4 debacle and what do you want from the reboot?

  1. It's not surprising that it sounds like Superman II, nearly every comic book movie in some way borrows from the original Superman film. That's why when Batman fans diss Superman, it should be reminded to them that Superman made it possible for them to have a Dark Knight or even a Thor film.

  2. I just heard that Pattinson was being considered for Parker, and now the wolf kid, Lautner? If there is any truth to this, the Spidey franchise just lost one huge fan. I cannot imagine more ridiculous casting.

When Raimi first did Spidey 1, and I heard of Toby cast, it was inspired. He was perfect. I think Gordon Joseph Levitt (whom Webb has worked with before) would be preferable to the twilight guys. Really… this has to be BS.

I've been collecting Spidey since before the Secret Wars, before McFarlene or Venom… I think comedy and action is what makes Spidey… SPIDEY!!! Not self-obsessed brooding 20-somethings that we'll forget in a few years.

All I can say is the road to The Avengers is looking better and better.

  3. Already posted my opinion of the “Twilight” angle in all this on the previous Spider-Man article. I'm sorry, Peter Parker shouldn't be some “young hunk.” Seriously. That is not what he character is all about, and to cast him in this manner is warning signal numero uno.

  4. Ok, clearly Lautner isnt right for this role, but then again neither was Tobey Maguire.
The excerpt from Spiderman 4 sounds like the kind of nonsense I would have expected from Raimi, fan alienating kinda stuff.
Hopefully they will skip the origin story, it doesnt need to be told, everyone in the world knows Spiderman's backstory!

An unknown actor would probably be best. Maybe they want Lautner to be Eddie Brock. I could live with that.

  5. Batman fan's diss Superman because they are morons. If it wasnt for those 2 amazing Chris Reeve flicks, comic book movies wouldnt exist. Period.
That's why they are still the best comic book movies even today, 30 years later. Those movies do not get enough respect from the Dark Knight generation.

  6. I used to be a spidey die-hard. After reading the above, I can say if this came true, I will not see it. That says a lot from me, but that sounds bad and Taylor? Seriously? No.

  7. If this idiot is in it or Robert pattison then I won't be seeing it.

  8. ok that spider-man 4 summary sounded like garbage so i'm glad that they scrapped that, and they better have Taylor Lautner be in talks to be like a bully or Eddie Brock or something. Oh and by the way, after reading this, Shia labeouf is sounding better and better as Spider-man/Peter parker.

  9. Boy… that would have sucked so bad… lol. But Taylor Lautner? Really?! Its like my worst nightmaires coming true. Shark Boy Grows Up To Become Spiderman! Sounds like a National Enquire headline!!!

  10. Easy there. Don't stoop to their level. Both Dark Knight and Superman are great.

  11. If either one of the Twilight actors play Parker, I will not go see it. They're just NOT RIGHT for the role (as someone mentioned). Tobey wasn't right either but he was closer to the character than either one of these guys. Bah.

  12. Oh geez. I'd take Haley Joel Osment before some trendy num-nut. Why not freak everybody out and cast Jackie Earle Haley as the creepiest Spider-Man ever? Or Bill Haley? Or Haley Bennett Or Haley Mills? Or General Mills!

  13. hey…I too thought Shia would be a better option

  14. I imagine Sony will be meeting with about twenty or so guys to play Peter, so I wouldn't worry just yet (that said, I thought WB wouldn't be dumb enough to cast Blake Lively, so take my opinion with a grain of salt). I expect Sony will go with a relative unknown (ie not Shia or Zac) so they can keep costs down. They'll get an eighteen-year-old underwear model to play Gwen and a McG/Ratner/Hood type to direct for the same reason.

  15. I can see why that SM treatment sounded problematic. And it would likely have received even more jeers than SM3. As for Taylor as the next Peter, well, it doesn't sound like a natural fit, but maybe there's more to the story. Personally, I think it would be best to take a dark horse actor again, such as Toby was, who really fits the prototype of Parker. But bottom line is that any new SM flick should stick very close to the source material.

  16. How was Tobey not perfect for he role of Parker? He was nerdy, small, of average looks, yet honest looking, exactly like the Peter Parker of comics. He didn't bring any casting baggage to the role and played Parker in a way very consistent with the comics.

  17. I just threw up in my mouth a little from what i've just read. I swear to god, if they twilightize Spider-man and make peter/spidey Taylor Lauhtner i will boycott this movie with every fiber of my bieng. this is like one of the signs of the apocalypse as far as im concerned. how could such a horrible franchise (twilight) have so much influence, has the world literally gone mad?

  18. I wouldn't mind Lautner as Spidey too much, but I'd prefer him as a sympathetic villain, (CMON PUMA!!).

  19. I don't think I could have picked a worse choice if I tried. I'd honestly prefer Pattinson to this guy.

Concerning the plot to Spidey4, I don't think it's that bad at all. It's really hard to make any movie idea sound good in just two short paragraphs, but at least it returned to the one villain per movie method (I have a feeling this is what upset Sony more than anything).

  20. well… if that's the direction that Sam wanted to take Spiderman 4 then Im suddenly glad Sony decided to scrap it (and I was all for Raimi coming back before reading that plot idea). Im sorry, but thats not how you do spiderman.

as far as the actors go, I honestly cant make an oppinion. I havent seen twilight, nor do I plan to. however, I dont feel its right to say an actor isnt right on the role just because of what theyre already doing… just from his looks, however, I have to day no. Peter Parker isnt a pretty boy (thats why I thought Toby was good as Parker, despite not keeping true to his sarcastic jokes).

what I want from the Spiderman reboot is the Sinister Six (should the franchise last long enough to set up them all) and a complete redo of Venom (what pissed me off most about him in SM3 is that he refered to himself singularly instead of as “we”). I actually thought out a way to include Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Venom, Scorpion, Green Golbin, Green Golbin II, Black Cat, the Lizard, and the Chameleon over the course of six movies, the first five setting up the sixth in which spiderman takes on the Sinister Six and Venom.

but hey, whatever they do with the new spidey franchise is fine with me so long as its not that piece of trash that Raimi was apparently setting up. I'm sorry, but everyone, including the average joe that doesnt know jack about spiderman wouldve hated that movie.

  21. If they select lautner i will not being seeing this movie, he doesnt fit the bill of Peter Parker at all, why would they even consider him? Toby was a good fit and played the part really well. I hope they can find a good fit like he was

  22. Wow those Spider-Man 4 ideas were terrible. First of all, Spider-Man does not kill people. Second of all, how many times does Peter have to retire from being Spider-Man? I'm glad we're doing the reboot. However, Taylor Lautner? No. I really hope he isn't cast as Peter.

  23. I read in Entertainment Weekly that Peter Parker would already have his powers when the reboot starts. I'm not sure what source they have but I thought I'd throw that out there.

  24. I am totally with you. If those were the actual Spider-Man 4 ideas, then Sony made the right choice getting rid of Raimi.

I don't believe for a second that Taylor Lautner is even being considered for Peter Parker. Maybe as someone else? Eddie Brock? He is at least the right build. And then he has enough star power to spin off as venom a few movies down the line.

Not that I think that is a good choice. But that at least keeps him away from the titular role.

  25. This is a proud day for me. There's practically a 100% anti-Twilight-star-in-spider-man-reboot rate from the comments so far!

    I love consistency.

  26. That plot synopsis sounds pretty bad. Really glad they didn't go through with it. As for the Taylor in the role of Spiderman…Wow. I've joked about them trying to appeal to the Twilight crowd by bringing in Morbius and Man-Wolf but those were shots at Twilight fans. It would likely be a poor marketing choice that I wouldn't put past Sony. Forcing Venom into Spider Man 3 was a pretty poor choice and I don't think it would be too much of a stretch for Sony mess this one up too. I don't know how they plan to sell Spidey 4 as 12-40 year old females are not the target audience for this franchise.

  27. screw it, then just cast jaden smith as spider man, lucy liu as mary jane and eddie murphy as uncle ben, aunt may and doc connors.
