Insomniac Games has revealed some interesting details regarding the new Spidey suit in its upcoming Spider-Man game for Playstation 4. The upcoming game, due out sometime in 2018, is set entirely in its own world, but will feature Miles Morales and include Mr. Negative as a villain (but not the main villain).

One of the more striking visual aspects seen from the game so far has been the new Spidey suit, which features a large white emblem on the front and back. Thanks to a couple of tweets from Insomniac Games, it's now known that the emblem wasn't merely a design choice but something that will serve a real, practical purpose in the game.

The Insomniac Games Twitter account responded to a couple of questions about its new Spider-Man game this week, shedding a bit of light on what to expect from the updated Spidey suit. The questions mainly concerned the mysterious white emblem. On Tuesday an apparently angry fan asked what "the deal" was with the "stupid" emblem, to which Insomniac Games replied that it "has a purpose" that will be explained in the game:

It's explained in the game and has a purpose— Insomniac Games (@insomniacgames) June 13, 2017

The account also responded with a simple "Yes" to a question on Thursday about whether there would be alternate Spider-Man costume options in the game:

The Spider-Man PS4 game is not connected in any way to the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, unlike an upcoming VR experience or an exclusive Dave & Buster's Homecoming arcade game. The game will feature a more experienced 23-year-old Peter Parker/Spider-Man and be set in a fresh universe not bound to any rules of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or anything else.

The white emblem may have taken a lot of fans by surprise at first, but it's encouraging to know that Insomniac didn't just slap a new symbol on Spidey's suit just for aesthetic purposes. It will have real meaning within the context of the game. Spider-Man's gameplay reveal has a feel similar to the Arkham series of Batman games, which certainly bodes well for the game's potential.

Video games based on superheroes are usually hit-or-miss. Video games based on specific superhero movies have had an even lower success rate. But that's why Insomniac's new Spider-Man PS4 game has more upside than usual; being free from the potential trappings of cross-promotion and having a pure focus on the game experience gives Spider-Man a chance to be one of the better superhero games in recent years.
