Tom Holland's take on Peter Parker/Spider-Man was met with rapturous applause from both critics and fans alike when he made his onscreen debut earlier this year in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War. Now, Holland is set to reprise the role once again in next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first in a hopefully long line of co-productions from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, which will also feature the appearances of a number of Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstays, including Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. After years of fans wishing for a better onscreen version of the beloved character, it seems fair to say that Marvel and Sony's deal for the character is paying off in spades for both studios so far.

Aside from just Civil War's pitch-perfect writing of the character and Holland's performance though, the film received praise for how it technically brought Spider-Man to life onscreen as well. With a new, already iconic version of the Spider suit and interesting visual techniques, the character managed to look familiar and yet, refreshingly different from all of the previous live-action interpretations.

Principal photography on Homecoming having concluded in New York just a few weeks ago, and now with the film heading into its post-production phase, director Jon Watts has shared a brand new behind-the-scenes look at the film on Instagram, and the facial capture currently being done by Holland. This same facial capture technique was used in Civil War also, so that the Spider-Man suit could look like it was capturing all of Holland's looks and expressions, even when he was underneath his costume. The effect was fairly seamless; the sequences when Holland was in costume and when he wasn't were virtually identical, from a visual standpoint alone, so it's not surprising to see the technique being used once again in Homecoming.

After premiering footage at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, the standalone film has more hype going for it than any Spider-Man film has in years, which is saying a lot considering the limbo the character was left in just a few years ago following the disastrous release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Thanks in no small part to Marvel's role in this new iteration, however, and the excitement towards seeing Spider-Man on the big screen again feels more palpable than it ever has before. Featuring an all-star cast, including Michael Keaton as the film's main villain, and Spider-Man: Homecoming has more than enough momentum going behind it right now to hopefully ensure that it's able to live up to the potential Civil War seemed to foretell about Holland's take on the friendly neighborhood webslinger.
