Spider-Man: Homecoming is notable for casting the youngest star yet in the title role with 20-year-old Tom Holland. A high-school-aged Peter Parker will make the movie stand out among previous installments in the Spider-Man franchise. But until recently, it was unclear just what kind of environment the title character would face at Midtown High in Queens.
Parker has always been a science whiz since the beginnings of the Spider-Man comics in the 1960s. So it would only make sense that he would focus on scientific topics at Midtown High. It turns out that in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Parker will be in the perfect environment for his considerable talents as a student.
Speaking as a celebrity guest for Dell at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Holland revealed that Midtown High School will be a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) oriented school in Spider-Man: Homecoming. As seen in a video on Comic Book, Holland talks about his leading role in Spider-Man: Homecoming while also talking at length about the Dell products being featured at CES.
Comic Book speculates that a STEM school will be the perfect place for Parker to “make the materials needed” to be as effective as he can be when he dons the Spider-Man suit, like his web shooters. But the report also notes that Dell has been a big partner with nonprofit organizations to provide better equipment for STEM schools across the country.
The relationship between Dell, STEM schools, and the production of Spider-Man: Homecoming makes the presence of their products in the movie – and the presence of Peter Parker in a STEM school – an obvious result. Dell has already released cross-promotional photos with their Inspiron laptops and the movie. It’s a strong indication that Parker will show off his considerable abilities in STEM subjects as he progresses in the movie and makes his transformation into Spider-Man.
Although it makes perfect sense for Parker to study at a STEM school within the narrative of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Dell’s pervasive presence throughout the promotion of the movie could strike some as a question of whether the producers have their priorities straight. This will only raise more questions if the movie itself falls short of expectations. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not new to cross-promotion and has produced a string of successful, high-quality movies in spite of it, so there’s reason to feel confident that Spider-Man: Homecoming will continue that tradition.
