Tom Holland Spider-Man Homecoming

A new batch of images from Spider-Man: Homecoming highlight Peter Parker's closest friends in high school. Following the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Phase 3 slate of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is all set to see Peter Parker return to the big screen in the form of his first solo MCU film. With Guardians 2 having already made $500 million at the global box office, Homecoming (directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland as the eponymous web-slinger) is in a good position to enjoy similar critical and/or commercial success this July.

Following the middling reception for The Amazing Spider-Man 2  in 2014, Sony finally teamed up with Marvel Studios to deliver MCU fans the big screen treatment of the fan-favorite web-slinger that they have been clambering for. Ahead of Spider-Man: Homecoming's theatrical release, even more images highlighting Peter Parker's school life in the film have arrived - with Peter's closest friends and (secret?) crushes stepping into the spotlight.

The latest Homecoming images (released online by SMTV Reports) offer a better look at three specific members of Peter's social circle in the film: his BFF Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), his crush Liz Allan (Laura Harrier) and Zendaya as Michelle aka. "Not Mary Jane" (as the actress has put it). In addition, there's a behind the scenes photo here that shows Watts working out a scene with costar Michael Keaton (who's playing the villainous Adrian Toomes aka. Vulture in the film).

While Sony's official plans to launch an Amazing Spider-Man shared cinematic universe ultimately failed to pan out, Homecoming is expected to go over well with the filmgoing masses - as evidenced by the Homecoming sequel being scheduled for a 2019 release, ahead of then. With Peter's high school life being an important story element of Homecoming (if not the most important aspect), the implication is that moviegoers will take well to the versions of Ned, Liz and Michelle (or whoever Zendaya is playing) that are featured in the movie.

Only time will tell whether or not Spider-Man: Homecoming will prove to be another super-sized box office success alongside the likes of such recent Marvel Studios successes as Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange. In the meantime, here's to hoping for the very best, as Tom Holland prepares to take on the mantle of becoming everyone's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in the MCU.
