Throughout the pre-production stages for Spider-Man: Homecoming, much had been made about the sheer number of people that continued to be adde to the movie. Whenever somebody was added, it became common that the role they had signed up for would remain a mystery, even if their involvement was not. One of those people was comedian Hannibal Buress, who had been reported to be a part of the cast earlier this summer. Even though there was no details on his role, there was hardly any big expectations that he would be a main figure in this movie or moving forward.
Fans of his and Spider-Man’s who were hoping for a big and important role for Buress in the movie may be disappointed. Buress has revealed the role he will be playing in a new interview, confirming he is simply a member of the staff at Midtown School of Science & Technology.
While speaking to The Breakfast Club radio show (via CBM), Buress went on to reveal his role as the gym teacher of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He did not confirm the character’s name, only saying, “I play one of the dumbass characters that don’t realize he’s Spider-Man. He’s Peter Parker. I’m just like… oh man, this guy’s really athletic!” Buress being yet another member of the faculty staff at Midtown makes plenty of sense given how much time this movie seems to take place at the high school itself.
While there is not much to go on as for Buress’ role in the movie, his confirmation of being the gym teacher could further confirm many other castings as well. Just a few weeks ago, a reported call sheet was leaked for Homecoming and had a vast majority of previously reported actors on the list. Buress was listed as well as Coach Wilson, which would be a fitting title for the gym teacher, especially if he also coached one of the other teams for the school (as has become a common practice in regular high schools).
If this is proof that the call sheet is in fact real, then it looks like Buress will be joined by fellow faculty members Selenis Leyva, Martin Starr, and Kenneth Choi, all of whom have been spotted on set at the school. This would also confirm reports of Bokeem Woodbine as Shocker, marking the third villain in the movie to go alongside Vulture and The Tinkerer.
If these names are proven to be correct, it only further raises questions of Zendaya’s reported role, where she is still listed as “Michelle” for this sheet. It has been reported that the reveal of her true identity was going to be saved for the end of the film and that this sheet would just be furthering that misdirect. It would also squash any further hopes of Abraham Attah playing the beloved character of Miles Morales, which was a long shot to begin with. Outside of Buress being the gym teacher and the other roles confirmed by Jon Watts himself, the rest still is unconfirmed and could remain that way for quite some time.
