There is a lot of excitement surrounding the future of Spider-Man on the big screen right now. Thanks to a sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland helped anyone experiencing Spidey fatigue to move past it, and just in the knick of time. Later this year, Sony and Marvel will join forces like never before to release Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first Spider-Man solo film to exist within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The implications of this move have already been shown in the trailers with Robert Downey Jr. having a noticeably present role, but the rest of the marketing materials so far have kept focus on the young web crawler. Recently, toy designs have again surfaced for the film showing off Peter Parker’s multiple suits he could wear in the film, while other pieces of marketing have highlighted the upgrades in his newest suit. Now, a new promotional image from the film has surfaced with Spider-Man striking a familiar pose.
On Reddit, a user uploaded a photo of what appears to be a Sony Pictures themed calendar for this year. While the calendar highlights many of their upcoming projects, it does give Spidey his time to shine, giving us a new look at him and possibly his Spidey signal logo briefly shown at the end of Civil War.
This is not the first time that Spider-Man has been featured in marketing that is not directly for his movie. For instance, the superhero was used to promote a new Dell computer. That said, this exact pose was also used in a banner previously spotted overseas, so this could be the default marketing picture that Sony feels most comfortable using at this point. As the movie approaches, there will undoubtedly be an abundance of marketing featuring Spidey, both officially for Homecoming but also as a branding purpose to sell other products.
As marketing of this caliber continues to become more prevalent, it should also mean Sony and Marvel are continuing to inch closer to releasing more footage from the film itself. While most do not want there to be too much shown as to have it spoiled, they have yet to lay out Vulture’s motivations or goals. Getting a closer look at Zendaya’s character is a high priority for many so they can determine whether or not she is Mary Jane after all, meanwhile Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) has not even been shown to this point. All of this will come in due time, which means promotional marketing like this will have to hold fans over for now.
