Spider-Man 4 Villains: Malkovich and Hathaway as Vulture & Vulturess?

Published 5 years ago by , Updated August 22nd, 2013 at 7:11 pm,

Movieline has dropped an exclusive report claiming that they have it from an inside source close to Spider-Man 4 that all the previous rumors of The Lizard and/or Black Cat serving as the villains for Sam Raimi’s next Spidey film are totally off the mark.

So who will be the principal villain(s) in Spider-Man 4, according to Movieline? That’s where things get a bit odd (even more so than the Black Cat rumors).

According to this exclusive report (which is being backed by our friends at First Showing), actor John Malkovich is being eyed for a role as The Vulture, a classic Spider-Man foe whose power is a flight suit with razor-sharp wings. Ok, so maybe that isn’t so odd: Malkovich as The Vulture is one of those head-slap, “Should’ve thought of that” casting choices we all see with 20/20 hindsight. However, news that Anne Hathaway (previously rumored for a role as Black Cat) is being eyed for a role as “The Vulturess” have fans around the ‘Net scratching their heads in confusion.

Even more confusing, is the rumor that Hathaway would still be playing the character of Felicia Hardy; in the Spider-Man comics, Hardy was the alter-ego of Black Cat. The Vulturess would be a brand new addition to the Spidey Universe (as far as I know), and if Hathaway is indeed being eyed for the role, it raises a lot of questions (and a few alarms) that I believe we should toss out here and now:

  • Would The Vulture and Vulturess be a team?
  • If they were a team, would Hathaway be Malkovich’s daughter, or (gross) his wife/lover?
  • Do we really need two villains with the same exact power?
  • Why use the Felicia Hardy character just to introduce a new villainess?
  • Wouldn’t having a Bird and Cat as villains just be cooler?

Now I can understand why (from a studio exec’s perspective) having Black Cat in Spider-Man 4 might seem like a bad idea: the character is too reminiscent of Catwoman, who is still a viable villain for Chris Nolan’s next Batman film. Catwoman is, of course, much more well-known than Black Cat, which could make BC a hard sell to a movie audience who can’t tell their Cat ladies apart.

It’s this same line of reasoning that has me believing Movieline when they report that their same source has confirmed that Dylan Baker’s Dr. Connors will absolutely NOT be appearing as The Lizard in Spider-Man 4 (though Baker will be back as Connors). The source states that studio execs were put-off by the thought of such an outlandish villain appearing in a Spidey film – though in the last installment, they did have an alien goo and a big pile of sand as villains, so what kind of hairs are they really splitting?

Anyway, we’ll keep you updated as this story develops – which I’m sure will be quickly, given the crazy nature of all this.

Oh Sam Raimi, can you just reveal who the bad guys are going to be? This is getting nuts…

Spider-Man 4 is going to hit theaters May 5, 2011. How does all this Vulture/Vulturess talk strike you?

  1. Raimi altered Peters origin in terms of who killed Uncle Ben ,
I dont believe the rumors but Raimi isnt above changing the mythos in service of the story he wants to tell.

  2. Malkovich can make a great villain but I’m not too big on the vulture. So, here’s my idea: John Malkovich as The Chameleon!!! I think that would be awesome.

  3. And you thought Spider-Man 3 sucked,,,?????????

  4. hmmm idunno about this…..

  5. I think we can assume at this point that, if any of this information is true, then the REAL villain in this movie is Sam Rami.

Like I said earlier, I don’t believe a word of it until I have any sort of real confirmation. But if it is true, may God help us all.

  6. L A M E ….. another spider man rumor… big surprise… tune in next week for the next one……

    Brock Less

  7. L A M E ….. another spider man rumor… big surprise… tune in next week for the next one……

Brock Lessner from UFC fame playing Rhino……….

  8. Well, doesnt this just sound absolutely horrendous! And this is Raimi with creative control? Seriously the guy has lost the plot ( literally and figuratively), perhaps the blame for Spiderman 3 rests more upon his hsoulders than everyone has been lead to believe.

Seriously if they do this, that is the final nail in the coffin of a franchise that has rarely lived up to its massive creative possibilities.

Vulture would have been fine, although I cannot see it working without looking truly ridiculous. The Vulturess is one of the worst ideas in cinema history since Michael Bay heard the words ‘giant talking robots’.

If they go down the Vulture path, there is only one casting choice. Patrick Stewart.

  9. LOL…Brock Lesnar as the Rhino!! Seriously laughing…until, all of a sudden, it made sense! My world just turned upside down.

  10. John Malkovich as the Vulture is not a bad choice. I love Ann Hathaway and don’t really mind her character helping out her dad in some way. But not as Felicia Hardy! I don’t really want to see Black Cat either. Let’s just leave it alone!
The lizard stiry line may be difficult to pull off believably, but it’s classic Spiderman!
I might point out that this is all just another hoax to keep up the hype…

  11. Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, let this be Raimi throwing us off the scent……….

  12. but you have to remember, stewart got offed in “the last stand”. so if they put stewart in sm4, that would create a lot of continuity problems.

  13. There is no way we will have a female vulture villain. Theese are all just rumors to get the movie hype going. I think that the Vulture would be a good idea and will work. the black cat is just a horrible idea in my opinion. I think that the villain is a crucial part of the movie but what we also shoudl consider is what is the rest of the movie going to be about. In the first it was about becoming Spiderman and trying to get the girl. The second was about the curse that came with the gift and getting the girl. The the third was about the power of the gift and the controversies that it leads to with teh girl. Now what will teh fourth be about? The wedding? I dont see where they are going to take us with this film. There needs to be something rocky that happens and rocks Spiderman’s world, liek lets say Aunt May dying.
As confused as I am about the villain I think taht I am even more confused as to the plotline of this film

  14. @tasouli whatever stop being clueless black cat is a Great IDEA! BLACK AS VULTRESS STUPIDEST IDEA OF ALL TIME!!

  15. To have a truly evil villain in Spider-Man is harder than it sounds. I think thats a theme for the spidermans is having a villian that people can somewhat relate to. The director almost makes you feel for them and that can’t be said for a lot of other movies..

Anyways, I was on the whole Morbius bandwagon but that got shot down real quickly.

I have a feeling this is a decoy because nobody in their right mind would go with a “vultress”… sounds beyond lame

  16. this has to be a rumor.

I can understand Vulture if they team him up with Electro or Mysterio or someone. he’s a good character (though Id find it a bit difficult to take him seriously on the big screen, given his age). However, this Vultress idea is the worst thing Ive heard of since they announced the Sims movie. theres no way Sam Raimi, with complete creative control, would waste his time on something like this.

Im still pulling for Lizard, Kraven, or Black Cat. Id be fine with the Vulture, but please, for the love of god, team him up with Electro or Mysterio or someone.

I hope Sam Raimi reveals the villain(s) before a rumor about some no name villain like Hypno Hustler emerges and is taken seriously. This debate needs to end and Sam Raimi is the only one with the power to do it.

  17. im a little disappointed my self i always thought that shocker would be a great villian. or even kraven would awsome another guy with who is a non mutant

  18. if they do not use the lizard and they use this piece of garbage vulture the spiderman films are done, epic fail.i would love to see the lizard, and i thought venom was cool he just didnt get enough screen time. give us the lizard.

  19. if they do not use the lizard im done with the spiderman films and me and my three kids will go watch something else what a crappy villain choice nice going ramie.

  20. The Vulturess!?!?!??! No. Please, No.

  21. What about the character “Rhino”?. Jugernaut was in X-Men The Last Stand. There were two villians in Spidey 3. They can surely have two villians in Spidey 4.
