spider man 4 rachel mcadams NOT blackcat Spider Man 4: McAdams Denies Black Cat Rumor

Ouch. The blogosphere takes another jab on the chin as our in-print counterparts over at Entertainment Weekly have confirmed that actress Rachel McAdams has NOT been cast as Black Cat in Spider-Man 4. The rumor was originally started by Mania.com, who exclusively revealed last week that Black Cat would be the villain in Spider-Man 4, and that McAdams was a “top contender” for the role.

Well, either Mania‘s source on this exclusive was doing a little wishful thinking or McAdams’ name was being tossed out in some very early (read: unofficial) talks, because neither the actress nor Sony were aware of the alleged casting when questioned.

Here’s what McAdams had to say to EW:

“That’s a total rumor, I have to say…I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.‘ And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true.”

And to finish the rumor off for good, a rep for Sony added this:

“It’s an Internet rumor, as so many things are these days.”

Sigh… Usually I’m one to defend my site and a lot of my “colleague sites” (what’s up guys!) but this kind of thing just makes it hard to legitimize our beloved blogosphere as the next era of (online) journalism. Gotta double and triple-check those facts…

For now, at least the first half of Mania‘s “exclusive” remains intact: Black Cat is still apparently the villain for Spider-Man 4. And, if there is any silver lining to all of this, it’s that we can now do posts fantasy-casting our top picks for actresses to play the silver-haired, feisty feline, Felicia Hardy. A recent poll over at MTV has Kate Beckinsale pegged as fans’ top choice to play Catwoman in Batman 3 – but that’s just crazy, IMHO. Maybe Mrs. Beckinsale’s “talents” would be more suited for the tongue-in-cheek universe of Spider-Man? I’ll let the speculation build from there…

Are you sorry to hear that Rachel McAdams isn’t playing Black Cat? Do you think Sony should try to turn rumor into fact and lure McAdams to the role?

For my part, I always thought that McAdams was too much of an “artsy actress” to “stoop” to the level of a comic book movie, but I guess that just sounds like know-it-all hindsight right about now…

Spider-Man 4 is slated to swing into theaters on May 5, 2011.

(You Rachel McAdams fans can next catch the actress in Sherlock Holmes, which opens on Christmas Day, 2009.)

  1. Thank GOD

  2. Boo!

… and to think that I spent all of 5min creating that graphic.

Still think she would have been good in the part.

  3. How do we we know for certain the Black Cat is in the film?
And for those who are happy McAdams wasnt cast,
Be careful what you wish for.
There are infinnitely worse choices for the part .
I predict the fanbase will be divided no matter who is cast.

  4. It well could be Black Cat (there have rumors swirling I believe since SM2).

While I’m not sure I can see her as a platinum blond, I’ve always thought Eliza Dushku (Wrong Turn; Dollhouse) would be perfect for the part.

When I think of the Black Cat, I think you need someone with an athletic build and is tough but feminine. Dushku fits that bill bigtime!

That’s because you haven’t a clue. Kate Beckinsale is the perfect choice for Catwoman. She brings the sex appeal in spades, is a terrific actress(watch Nothing But the Truth, Cold Comfort Farm, Winged Creatures, Last Days of Disco or Snow Angels), can do the action, and would look better than anyone in skin tight black vinyl. Not to mention she is the actress that looks the most like Selena Kyle. Plus, she’s the right age.

Oh, and she destroys Rachel Ward on the hotness scale.

  6. Pardon me, I meant to say Rachel McAdams, not Rachel Ward.

  7. I was never really sold on McAdams as Black Cat. I’m sure she’d be fine in the role, but I think they can get someone more voluptuous in the role. I really don’t understand the number of people who are gaga over Dushku, she isn’t THAT hot, she’s actually a little strange looking IMO. She’d be all wrong as Black Cat. Cast an unknown to play the part and find someone who LOOKS like Black Cat and has her attitude (or can pull it off).

  8. Of course she denies it – they passed on her.

  9. Andy S,

People love Dushku because she has a fantastic body. While she’s still very good-looking, I’ll agree with you that her face doesn’t really do anything for me.

    @Kofi

I find it hard to believe McAdams would have any qualms “stooping” to do a comic book movie (which is crazy to begin with as they’re all the rage AND this is an established franchise) because, as you pointed out, she’s in the new Sherlock Holmes movie. That movie doesn’t look like it’s going to be a very serious adaptation, and fits right at home with the style and feel of so many comic book movies.

And also, like joe said, Kate Beckinsale is pitch-perfect for Catwoman, although I’ll be the first to admit there’s almost no chance she’d take the role; if her reluctance to participate in a new Underworld is any indication, she’s done with those kind of movies.

  10. List of actors involved with Chris Nolan’s Batman series:

    Christian Bale
    Morgan Freeman
    Liam Neeson
    Michael Caine
    Katie Holmes
    Maggie Gyllenhaal
    Heath Ledger
    Gary Oldman

With the exception of Katie Holmes (who they were wise enough to replace), pretty much everybody on this list is the winner of some of acting’s top or most prestigious awards. Kate Beckinsale is a 2002 Razzie nominee for Pearl Harbor.

That’s a joke (sort of) but if you think Beckinsale is in the same class or caliber as the rest of those actors… point is, SHE’S NOT.

Nolan’s Batman isn’t about “the look” of the characters – nobody thought Ledger had “the look” of the Joker. Nolan’s Batman is about THE TALENT – top caliber talent on down from director, to cast, to crew. That’s the only reason why those movies are as good as they are. Talent valued over image or popularity.

Kate Beckinsale IMHO does not fit that criteria. That’s all I’m saying. Agree to disagree if you’d like.

  11. MacAdam’s too highbrow for comic book movies? Your valid point raised by Kate Beckinsale’s lackluster performances is somehow moot when you make such statements as this. She was in “Mean Girls” opposite Lindsay Lohan not 5 years ago. Sheesh. The Time Traveller’s wife? Blech. She barely held her own opposite Russell Crowe, Hellen Mirren and (cringe) even Ben Affleck seemed more comfortable in State of Play. As far as Spider-man being too hokey or w/e, Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina have both been at the game for a long time, and are both highly versatile yet underrated actors. If anything, I’m not sure her calibur is up to snuff with that franchise.

  12. While I’m at it, Dor Sho Gha!

  13. If McAdams trained well and give it her all, Id say she’d have a chance to pull it off for the role. My 2nd choice would be Elisha Cuthbert, did i get the name right? or Laura Vandervoort who played Kara on Smallville. I dont think Eliza dushku seems right and as Mila Kunis. I wonder if people would be skeptical of her for the role since they didnt think highly of Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom. Wouldnt hurt for Raimi to test screen McAdams along with other choices he would have.

  14. McAdams has the beauty, but she doesn’t seem to have the proper build to be a realistic super villain and I can’t imagine her playing a bad guy.
The funny thing though is that I don’t really know if the Black Cat ever really was a villain. But I do think it would make a better movie if she were more villainous.
I hope they cast someone who is super-hot haha (and can act).

  15. chrisj,

Cuthbert would be a good choice, but she might be too short for the role (5’2″). Right age and look, though. I actually think Kate Hudson could pull of the role, though. SHe’d have to stop going to Yankees games in the spring though. LOL. I read over at IMDB that she turned down the role of MJ in Spidey…I wonder if she regrets that move? :P

  16. In a way, I’m happy because I could not see McAdams in the part. On the other hand, I’m sad because I have always liked her as an actress and she’s top talent.

As to who can be Hardy? Sadly, I’d now have to rule out Yvonne Strahovski due to “Chuck”‘s new revised schedule (Zach Levi left ‘Thor’ due to this)…but if one really must know, I hope Black Cat isn’t in the mix at all, at least not in regards to that alleged plot point we heard about a week ago.

So, I have to brainstorm. I’ll give you a top five for Black Cat, minus Yvonne Strahovski due to Chuck. Random order, no favorite. (because Yvonne is my favorite, lol)

    5) Kristanna Loken.

    4) Kate Hudson.

    3) Jolene Blalock

    2) Ali Larter

    1) Anne Hathaway

I will now return to my 5th of Southern Comfort….

  17. @ Andy S
Well despite her height, she looks like she’d be perfect for the role. Both her and McAdams kinda look like the animated Felcia Hardy on the 90′s Spider-man: TAS. And it might be just me but when i watched G.I Joe- Rise Of The Cobra, Sienna Miller looker taller while she was dresses in her black outfit but at the end, she looked shorter. Anyways People mentioned how short Michael Keaton was as Batman as Bruce Wyane compared to Kim basinger but he pulled off the role enough no-one cared. Atleast i didnt. Someone once told me the only time you noticed somthin like that for sure is when the camera is far away when two people are together side by side. On personal not, i thought Mj’s hair looks better in red as seen in the first film. Not a big deal or anything to me.

  18. sorry for the mistypes ya’ll

  19. @ Andy S
BTW, to be honest i never saw a film of Kate Hudson’s but she seems like a good choice. If she could pull of the role i guess she could always record the games she misses, lol. Reason why McAdams & Cuthbert were my first two choices would be because both actresses, to me have that seductive, smile. If they Have Rogue recieve Ms Marvel’s powers in a X-men 4, Hudson would be perfect for that role.

  20. Julia Stiles also may be in Spiderman 4. check it out here:

    http://movieblog.ugo.com/movies/exclusive-julia-stiles-in-talks-for-spider-man-4

  21. @ M-cat
It’s interesting news to hear that Julia Stiles would be once of the choices to play Black Cat. She looks like a good contender for the role from films i seen her in. With McAdams pretty much outta the rumor mill, id say Stiles and Cuthbert, Laura Vandervoort would be my top 3 choices.

  22. Note: I forgot a name, but that’s only because I was suspended in a Lake Bell moment. Scratch Kate Hudson. I’m sober now.

  23. this SHOULD NOT be a part…

    cmon seriously??

spiderman is a solo dude, that buddy buddy action in 3 was hilarious (not the desired effect)
even if shes a villian, thats just wasted screen time on someone that will POSE NO real threat… shed never kill or take out spiderman

  24. Rachel McAdams is awesome, I’d be stoked to see her as Catwoman!

  25. I mean Black Cat lol

  26. To whoever mentioned her…Kate Hudson is a terrible choice IMO. She would ruin the movie for me.

  27. “List of actors involved with Chris Nolan’s Batman series:

    Liam Neeson

Stop watching stuff like Pearl Harbor and go watch Kate’s best films like I told you to. Until you do that you don’t have a leg to stand on. Kate is a terrific actress, and better than both Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhal. Maggie Gyllenhal’s performance was every bit as bad in The Dark Knight as Katie Holmes was in the first film. So the fact that these two were in the Batman films renders your entire argument as nothing more than nonsense.

I’ve also stated it’s not just about looks. Do you even bother reading the posts you respond to? It’s about having the sex appeal, the acting chops, and the ability to pull off the action sequences.

And yes, I’d definitely place Kate among those actors before I’d put Maggie Gyllenhal and Katie Holmes among that list. And please, don’t talk to me about Razzies. Do you really want me to list the good and/or big name actors they’ve given awards to? They do it for the publicity, otherwise they’d get none.

  28. “Your valid point raised by Kate Beckinsale’s lackluster performances is somehow moot when you make such statements as this.”

The problem is he doesn’t have a valid point when it comes to Kate Beckinsale. Sure, you can look at her bad films and make that argument. But I could make that argument about the best actors in Hollywood, including the likes of Pacino, Crowe, Deniro, etc. If I only watched Russell Crowe in Virtuosity, I could argue he was a bad actor. But we know that’s not true. The raves reviews for her performances in films like Cold Comfort Farm, Nothing But the Truth, and Last Days of Disco says it all. Beckinsale’s only fault as an actress is her own poor choices.
