Enough already! This entire week seems like it’s been devoted to rumors about who will and will not be playing the role of Black Cat, the recently announced villain (and temptress?) of Spider-Man 4.
When news leaked that it would be Spidey vs. Black Cat in the next film, the first actress named for role was Rachel McAdams – then that rumor was debunked. After that came word that Julia Stiles is up for the role. Now we’re hearing Anne Hathaway’s name being tossed in the mix, while many internet fanboys are insisting that Eliza Dushku or Elisha Cuthbert be given the role because “they’re hot.”
Look… at this point we could keep on “reporting” each and every one of these Black Cat casting rumors as they pop-up and get knocked down again, but why? We all know the final decision is coming soon. But before we learn who will be playing Black Cat, let’s take a moment for ourselves and have a little fun discussing who should play Black Cat.
Lets begin with some background info on the character:
In the Spider-Man comics Black Cat is Felicia Hardy, a villain / love interest of Spidey’s who first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man in July of 1979 (almost 40 years after Catwoman first appeared in Batman comics, in case you’re wondering).
After decades of add-ons and reworkings, Black Cat’s current origin story is that she was the daughter of a world-famous cat-burglar, a daddy’s girl who inherited papa’s talent for larceny and his ambition to be the best. After some tragic incidents in her young adult life involving domineering men, Felicia becomes a fierce, independent-minded woman who trains herself to peak athleticism and skill as a thief. When her father ends up in jail, Felicia dons the Black Cat costume and attempts a jail break – where she runs into Spider-Man.
In the comics, Black Cat had the power of “bad luck,” often jinxing her opponents (and sometimes her friends, too). This “power” started out as a farce – elaborate tricks and traps meant to throw an enemy off-balance – but when Cat ended up in the clutches of the Kingpin, he used enhancement technology (same he used to create The Scorpion) to give Black Cat a “bad luck aura.” Since then, Cat and Spider have gone from hot and heavy to cold, ultimately becoming friends with an extra spark of attraction running between them.

Black Cat (if you can’t tell from the pics above) is sexy, flirty, wild, smart, crafty, and pretty kick ass. The character could’ve come and gone as a “knock-off Catwoman,” yet has remained a revered part of the Spider-Man universe for decades – which should speak to how much she’s distinguished herself as a character. Whenever the comics got too heavy with the whole Peter / MJ soap opera, Black Cat was there to break up the monotony. For readers like me, it was like having a wonderful affair without any long term consequence (and who doesn’t love that?).
Best part of all, Black Cat was an exciting rival of Spider-Man, not just another hurdle in the (often-annoying) romantic life of Peter Parker.
But who should play Black Cat? Here are my recommendations…

chrisj,
” especially a hero like superman or spiderman because both of them are light characters who are the complete opposite of Batman.”
HEY NOW LISTEN. Spidey does not have to be this “light” superhero he`s very mature colored, very unself-extactic, discretionized, fairly democracized-state of mind and not such eAGER blissed human being into things. Also, he doesn`t have such a goofy superpower, now the way it refelects with his superpower and his human being and the way those 2 things match is a way that goes onto a less-campier more growth-immense sidde, so he is somewhat both a kid-friendly but can also be a dark tone-world superhero, now look if we just go for this light-toned kid/family friendly happy life shining-lesson in all the spiderman movies, then it absoloutely sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is really hard for me to stand this weak kid-friendly light watered-stuff, why should there be a problem with that cuz “that`s who the character is “? you see it really gives me a sick feeling to hear those B.S. words, “that`s who the characteer is.” a “character” like spidey can go both ways, can go AS LIGHT AS dark. or in the middle of light and dark. If the world had not delivered one anywhere near a dark film and just made it all shining family friendly then what would it be like? Some genereals would say that`d be just fine but i`d just say THE WORLD WOULD SUCK!!! bUT Some may think that the world has tooken too deeply into the darker world of movie lighting but even so i`d say people need to learn something if it was too easy for non-dark things to happen in this world with no heavy goal challenge then there`d be not even things going on there. Now if all they did was treat the spiderman films as some kid-friendly happy life lesson type of films then i`d be a little fed up. I`d need it to go just slightly dark/scary/violent at some points in the movie, but seriously though IT`S just a movie though it needs to be more believable at turns.
And let`s talk seriously, how will the franchise ever recover from the third? with some lethal pieces of fl;aws the movie`s been farther cut with more flaws, so seriously how will it ever recover. It`s lost about half itself now it`s pretty much dead and i have a question who was it that wanted venom in so badly was it most of us fans ( i wasn`t one of them) or was it fans at some comic con area in person? But even without Venom in the movie what woulda happened with sandamn? Maybe the reason why “Sandman was uncle ben`s killer in the movie” was so that him and spidey have depth instead of being some ordinary criminal with no backround who runs out robbing banks. And vulture would`ve been a villain? Spidey and harry “teaming up against vulture and sandman”? Vulture ain`t dark enough for harry nor is any other proper villain that wouldn`t be too extreme and Sandman can`t be independent as a villain.
And i agree with people who said TDK had some flwas, but not every movie is perfect i guess. Every movie us supposed to have a problem, rising point, and lesson but it`s kinda hard for me to picture that without any flaws. every good superhero franchise has been pretty much ruined for me, except for superman. I have a feeling that iron may go well without the same curse, though. Maybe this franchise can be less ruined but not completely unruined.
oh yeah and about who should play blackcat in Sm4, um, this week`s poll about who should play blackcat????? Which means blackcat is going to be a villain? I am really disappointed with the way things are going right now it seems it`d be impossible to go a good way with what i`ve been reading why is it so dangerous to put a symbiote in a spiderman movie people say that they can`t do venom justice on screen and that him as a villain will ruin the movie? YOU`RE CRAZY!!! It isn`t that predictable that he can`t be done justice on screen it can work because there is always a certain technique to make the special effects right how could you say he can`t be done justice on screen after all the things we`ve seen on screen before but wait it`s too much hard work for them because Venom is too dark? listen i think for some reason it was meant for spidey to face Venom cuz it`s a matching story it`s a villain that probably wouldn`t be expected for spidey to face that is more darker-themed and colored then any other villain could be a villain that seems outside of what you can expect spidey to face the story of spidey turning evil and having to choose between the suit or himself is a perfect story to be a symbol of what his uncle ben told him he`s an average superhero but a villain seeming a little outside of what his average superhero-ness is supposed to face was destined because it`s a very important theme since he`s different from other superheroes. Spidey`s villains are supposded to go very dark so venom should`ve been setup for sm5 in the final second of sm4 with carnage coming in the last 45 minutes. Why isn`t just one symbiote enough? cuz it`s still a little obviuous that venom is a right villin for spiderman even though he would seem dark enough but it`s supposed to be an even more unexpected villain so spidey and venom are supposed to team up against carnage with venom turning good. the type of superhero spidey is makes a large investment in life factuals. now if you don`t like symbiotes then you shoulda liked how he was in sm3 but if he was done a little better then if you have any sense of “horror” movie fan in yourself then you shoulda really liked it. From all the comments i`ve been reading it seems we shoulda never put venom in a spidey movie??? ever?????? don`t we wanna try using a villain which we`re less sure can work on screen, instead of using this old technique where we use things we`re sure can work if we work hard enough???? you guys probably have no idea what i`m saying but i have a different prospective.
Guys, what do you mean that Spiderman and Superman are light characters? I know that they are both alike Superhero’s both work for a news paper company (Except one’s a Photographer the other is a writer) Both first and last names start with the same letter (Peter Parker and Kent Clark) or maybe sound the same..Both wear glasses.. Except one is DC and the other is Marvel. Now The Dark Knight is very alike Iron Man and the reason for that is because they are both billionares, both made there own Superhero Suits, both (Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark) lost there parents at a young age..both own there fathers company..both have Butlers..You get the point..although one is Marvel and the other is DC…I have a feeling that when The Green Lantern and The Flash Movies hit theaters both of those characters are going to be very alike each other as well. Who know’s but it sounds that way.
and i`d wanna give`m plenty of time to do venom justice on screen. but i wouldn`t need that amazing of a spidey movie. now look leaving the symbiotes out the next film is the wrong direction since it`s the final movie he`s supposed to face his darkest challenge at the final run of each film the main character is supposed to face his/her hardest challenge which is no different for the movie series are you too boiled to understand that haven`t you seen movies which him/her faces their hardest challenge at the end don`t you get the real meaning of a movie but heh it doesn`t really matter cuz the franchise has gone too extreme and twisted in the first 3 movies and is now pretty much ruined.
I don’t think re-doing the Venom story s a good idea. But I think they should definitely save that for the reboot and bring in Carnage.
I wish they would bring in The Chameleon and/or Kraven the Hunter for a future movie. They could be in the same one because they’re related. Imagine Gerard Butler or Russel Crow as Kraven. That would be cool.
chrisj,
” um, ok, why is it that when a superhero film, regardless who that hero is receives negative posts they always mention somthing from The Dark Knight?”
So, are you saying the superhero may be too light to receive that type of negative post? no matter ” what the superhero is” if they knew a movie was being recorded of them they should understand that there is a wide sort of range for that film to get that negative post? So we should just go easier on that film and treat the superhero softer? It`s better if people give out exactly what they think, cuz it`s never good to hide something to make the superhero feel better. There is a reason why people think something so believe it or not that reason exists. Anything can happen.
why do you want to see kraven so much? that`s what`s gonna make up for Sm3? well what i said up there is my opinion. if you don`t get it well then ok. but there is something wrong with people these days. Kraven isn`t villanous enough and neither is chameleon. both too weak and chameleon too ordinary.
ok seriously what the HELL is the matter with people??????????????????????????????????????????????????????? wow none of you are sensitive enough to think this franchise is ruined.
@ John K
What im sayin is when one film has little bit of flaws they shouldnt rely on another movie like TDK which involves more darker characters then whats seen in Spidey 3. The only thing in common Spidey has in common w/ Batman is really they both fight for good & are seen as workin oustide the law, most noteably Batman. Bottomline is Batman & the franchise are darker and more popular and you can reboot the spidey franchise right and still it wont mean could do much better. Nolan’s first film is a good example, people loved it but it didnt bring as much money as the Burton’s 89 Batman film. When people say they want to see Spidey dark, how dark and give the details. I mean make him dark to as he would kill the villains on purpose, or keep it the same way as we seen in all the films to how the villains were defeated? Just curious is all.
@ John K:
Kraven is not villainous enough???
He shot Spider-Man between the eyes and buried him alive. I’d call that pretty dang villainous.
The Chameleon would make a great movie villain. He is incredibly skilled with imitating other people and masks. And also, very importantly, he is grounded in reality! I’d rather seem him than a man charged with electricity or a vampire.
@chrisj
My opinions are always going to be based on my fairly extensive comic book collection which dates back to the early sixties. 90% of it is Marvel. The rest is DC mainly Batman titles and a few other scattered titles from smaller companies.
I will always use them as my main point of reference and a benchmark to measure these films up against. I can’t help it as I feel if movie studios are going to spend millions of dollars, they should respect the original source material as much as possible.
Now no one is going to make the perfect super hero film. There are just too many parameters to deal with given the history of characters and their treatment by various artists and writers over the years to make everyone happy.
But I believe Christopher Nolan came pretty close to faithfully depicting the Batman. Even the Burton/Keaton collaboration was pretty good. I really enjoyed the first one. I always thought that Burton went for a Frank Miller – “Year One” look with that film. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
The Joel Schumacher Crap Fest isn’t worth talking about. I’ve never liked the Campy approach. It’s so outdated and very unlike the comic books. Give me a mature, realistic treatment any day. A mature realistic treatment doesn’t necessarily mean (dark) either. I simply don’t want to see a kiddies cartoon on celluloid.
I guess Spiderman will eventually get a reboot. All I hope for is that it’s done with integrity and in keeping more to the mature treatment of the comic books. Just finished reading “Amazing Spiderman” #604. The Chameleon’s back and so is Kraven The Hunter’s wife…..mmm?
One of the very few things that actually worked in SPiderman 3, was the introduction of Gwen Stacy as a rival for MJ, so by bringing in Black Cat, are they not effectively doing the same storyline again.
I’d rather see Gwen STacy again.
@DrSamBeckett
I would have loved to have seen Gwen Stacey in the first film. Introduce MJ in the second and have The Green Goblin kill Stacey in the third installment.
But I guess it’s rather pointless going over what could have been. Maybe in the reboot.
I’m curious to see what development will occur with Black Cat. Can’t say I’m all that thrilled though.
Thats what they should have done in the first place, but the franchise has been mishandled from day one. They cast excellent actors to play the villains, but forgot to get a decent Peter or MJ, they are really going to have to pull out all the stops for number 4.
Spiderman 2 came very close to an ideal cinematic vision of the web crawler but that seems like such a long time ago now.
Some of you ignore the fact that villains that face off with heroes power for power in a physical way, is a one dimension conflict that doesn’t make total sense to do. That being the case spreading the conflict to include Parker and his friends enriches it, it becomes more real world. You go to the movies to feel something, but everyone doesn’t put the same value on a particular feeling. Especially for entire stretches of movie time. Since Raimi is filming this picture and really it goes without saying for any director or any picture that they need the room to make the environment comfortable for themselves. Making the kind of movie you want to make, playing to your strengths. Raimi says he doesn’t really feel comfortable with Venom and Carnage. Why risk the film’s success on that? Raimi leaving the project at this point could put the whole franchise in danger. Who knows who would want out if he left? For better or worse the best thing to do in this case is consider that the problems Spiderman faces this time must amp up the internal, emotional, and psychological problems that would interfere with him being as super as he can be. That makes weaker villains just as hard to subdue as stronger ones.
Yvonne Strahovski
She’s perfect for the role, she has skillz with action and she can even do an accent if they opt for that route.
She’s only moderately well-known which I think tends to be a better choice in a superhero movie. Well known actors are too hard to get past to get to the heart of the character. Oh it can be done, but unknowns can be so much sweeter. Take the new Star Trek as an example.
Anyway, that’s my vote. Yvonne Strahovski, Yvonne Strahovski, Yvonne Strahovski.
Don’t know who she is? Check out Strahotski.com.
Not too keen on Black-Cat as it’s way too close to Catwoman/Batman – Still worried that the makers still don’t really know what they’re doing with the next movie..which is pretty bad…it isn’t hard..just give us more Spider-man…a good villian….great effects with Spidey doing things in the air that’ll blow fans away.Bring in The Kingpin!
@ the old man
You make a valid point. You know what your comment reminds me of?
The Green Goblin: “First we attack HIS HEART!”
Haha. Just had to share that.
chrisj,
I don`t mean Spidey being dark, i mean the movie with dark with dark characters, it really doesn`t need to be THAT dark, but it needs to grow through slideshifts of being dark/violent just at some turns, seriuosly though IT`S JUST A MOVIE it ain`t real but i need the drama to immense the movie through upstack.
Now, seriuosly, how will the franchise EVER recover from Sm3??????????????????? HELLO?????? The movie`s been cut with so many flaws how can a franchise recover from that kind of hairball???????? Worst superhero movie i`ve ever seen, though biologically i haven`t seen many superhero films. TDK had quite of crappy flaws that may have actually ruined the new Batman franchise for me! I do remember seeing Batman and Robin kinda fell asleep during the movie but did notice some flaws. I think i have seen movies with worse flaws than 3 but the heavier duty calls not the full hairsack of flaws!
Now really, who was it that wanted Venom in, was it most uf US fans, or was it comic-con fans? could comic-con fans be asked what villains they wanna see?
neontiger21,
well ok but spidey getting his eye shot out? no matter what he isn`t powerful and mixed enough for the movie and chameleon i don`t know a villain like chameleon is too random-colored think about it a guy changing colors into other people???? that type of supervillain power in a spiderman movie???? The most logical choices woulda been venoim, carnge, lizard, but wow it seems impossible that`d happen. i woulda wanted thenm to have plenty of time on the project but if sam raimi hates the symbiotes cuz they`re too r-rated well then i see why by what if venom was just a bit scarier in Sm3??? still woulda hated the project?????
Also kinda hoping spidey doesn`t have any crossovers into upcoming marvel films, like Avengers, capt., etc…
oh yeah and black cat???????? OH GREAT THIS SUCKS!!!!!
Man John K get over “Spider-Man 3″ already. I can’t even remember half of it. Was it two or three years ago it came out? Maybe Raimi will write in a scene where half of three was a bad dream that Parker had. Have you heard the rumors that 30 minutes of “SPM3″ was cut? Maybe a 3.1 version will be released, just before #4 is released.
Maybe you should back away from comics for awhile Heh? Learn HTML or how to draw, or if you know how to draw then draw better…
I agree wholeheartedly with The Old Man. It’s just a movie haha. No need to get angry.
@ John K
Even though i partly enjoyed Spider-man 3, there was scenes i didnt like and thought could of been cut outta the final cut. But ive seen worser superhero based films than S3, films like Supergirl mainly, Elektra, Superman 3, Daredevil etc. But like The Old Man said Spidey 3 is in the past now and its time to move on. Plus why bash Spidey 4 when still we havnt learned all much about it yet. I for one would atleast wait till after i see it before i pass judgment.
@ Braveheart
If it was possible, i would like to see Kingpin myself in a Spidey film.
Everybody Place nice.
As for “dark” Spider-Man. I just think that Spidey should always carry an underlying sense of fun to it. Otherwise the witty banter just sounds silly.
My vote for SM4: Maximum Clonage or at least the start of the Clone saga.
Am I kidding? Maybe yes… Maybe no…
…(def kidding)
yes it`s in the past??? but i said how will the franchise ever recover from it?????????????????????????? just because this movie isn`t as bad means the franchise will recover from the things we saw in the past movie?????????????????????????????????? it shows moblized characteristics of things like what we seen in the last movie. It`s completely humiliated the franchise!!!!! Even if we move on the franchise can still recover from the humiliation.
Just a movie? ok, but what would we have without movies in this world?
@ John K
get a hold of yourself, Spidey 3 is over with, MOVE ON!!! Everyone else does.
yeah and i said how will the franchise ever recover from the third movie you don`t get wat i`m saying.
chrisj,
what do you not get of what i`m saying?the last movie may have made people think things that i wouldn`t want them to think of anything to do with the franchise. Even if we ” MOVE ON” the humiliation caused in Sm3 will has not already killed the franchise when with the type of things people can think about when there`s a movie like this? crappy things in the last movie have made people think things and humiliate things which i don`t want to happen. you can still recover from the way you`ve made yourslef look by doin this type of movie? so THAT`S IT!!!!! spidey 3 wasn`t crappy enough to kill the franchise? or just cuz it was crappy means it don`t kill the franchise? it`s really hard for me understand what you`re trying to tell me chrisj.
@ John K
What im sayin Spidey had its flaws, yes and everyone knows it! Spidey 2 had things i didnt like that well aswell, mostly Spidey losing his spidey powers for a limited time all because he lost his self-confidence, and those happy joy joy scenes of him walkin. Sounds pretty similar to some of the stuff in in Spidey 3 in my opinion but to think the franchise is completely ruined over one film? Doubtful, especially when the film brought in more money so Raimi did somthin right otherwise the film’s ratings would of more to Terminator Salvation’s. Question is why dwell on Spidey 3, if it bothers you so much, leave it outta your dvd collection and dont bother seeing the 4th film at all. I only speak for me but i for one had enough of all the whining over Spidey 3. Get over it!
