It's been a big day in movie news, from various superhero casting announcements to the release of the new Terminator trailer to the reveal of the cast and title of the new James Bond film. For those who weren't paying attention, the 24th Ion-produced James Bond film will be titled Spectre, and it will star Daniel Craig, Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Whishaw, as well as newcomers David Bautista, Lea Seydoux, Monica Belucci, Andrew Scott, and Christoph Waltz.

The title alone implies that James Bond will be dealing with that evil organization of the same name that plagued Sean Connery's iteration of Bond back in the day. That being the case, what will become of Quantum, the evil organization used in lieu of SPECTRE - because Eon Productions didn't have the rights at the time - for Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace? Will Quantum just be forgotten altogether, or might we see it folded into SPECTRE (or otherwise acknowledged)? For those fans who want to see the dangling plot threads of Solace picked up, there's good news: Jesper Christensen, the actor who played the villainous Mr. White in Casino and Solace, told the Danish magazine Euroman (mere hours after the Spectre announcement) that he would be returning for the fourth Daniel Craig Bond film.

Said Christensen:

"I am looking forward to working with Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig. It is a truly exciting script and a very capable team. So it'll be fun."

Mr White Jesper Christensen Quantum Spectre

The last time Christensen talked about his work on James Bond, he disparaged the movies he appeared in, so you may want to regard his (potential) return with skepticism until the studio officially confirms it. But if true (and really, why would he lie?), what can we assume this means?

The last time we saw Mr. White was about halfway through Quantum of Solace. James Bond crashed a secret meeting between the various members of Quantum during an opera. He stole an earpiece, alerted the group to his presence, then identified each member as they got up and left the opera house. The only member who didn't take the bait was Mr. White. Watch the clip below:

While Mr. White was originally set to die at the end of Solace, the filmmakers let him live instead, leaving his fate - and the fate of Quantum - up in the air. This was the group that had been responsible for the death of the woman James Bond loved, Vesper Lynd (played by Eva Green). Naturally, some fans wanted to see that thread fully resolved.

Myself included. While there were elements of Skyfall that I liked (the cinematography, the action, the skyscraper fight scene, Javier Bardem's performance) and elements I didn't much care for (the weird mish-mash of Dark Knight-style gritty realism and goofy, self-referential humor, the positioning of Bond as an old, washed-up spy while simultaneously still setting up origin elements in the form of Q and Moneypenney), I have to say I was bummed that Quantum didn't make a reappearance.

Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale

It's not so much that I need all these Daniel Craig Bond movies to follow a single throughline; rather, I just want to see unresolved threads from previous films wrapped up at some point.

So for me, the idea that Mr. White could be making his return is great news. While Quantum of Solace certainly had its issues (after all, it was in pre-production when the big writers' strike took place), Mr. White and Quantum were the highlights. And to be honest, I've actually come around to appreciating Solace more than I did the first time I watched it - Craig is fantastic in it and the depiction of James Bond as a mercilessly efficient machine with a mind for revenge was really enjoyable.

But how will Quantum be treated now that SPECTRE is in town? Will Quantum be an arm of SPECTRE? Will SPECTRE swallow Quantum? Or maybe they'll be a rival organization? We'll have to wait and see.

What say you, Screen Ranters? Are you happy to see that Mr. White is (probably) returning for Spectre? Would you rather see Quantum acknowledged or forgotten altogether? Drop us a line in the comments.
