mortal instruments film adaptation Sony Pictures May Acquire The Mortal Instruments

Thanks to The Hunger Games having thoroughly demonstrated that The Twilight Saga doesn’t have a monopoly on the young adult demographic, there’s been a renewed push to bring author Cassandra Clare’s popular Mortal Instruments books to the big screen. Screen Gems was previously slated to back the project, but pulled out last year – and with the studio went longtime attached director Scott Charles Stewart (Legion, Priest).

A few weeks back, the first (in potentially several) Mortal Instruments movie adaptations acquired a new director in the form of Harald Zwart (the Karate Kid remake). Jump to the present and Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures is now in the midst of closing a deal with Constantin Film (The Three Musketeers) to collaborate as the movie’s financial backers.

Swapping Stewart for Zwart should benefit the Mortal Instruments movie, since the latter has proven himself to be a more reliable director-for-hire than the former has as a crafter of effects-heavy fare. However, the drawback of having someone like Zwart at the helm is that the overall quality of the film tends to be more directly determined by the script and cast (see: The Karate Kid, Agent Cody Banks, The Pink Panther 2).

Fans will now be better able to gauge whether or not Lily Collins (who’s up to portray Mortal Instruments heroine Clary Fray) is an example of good/poor casting after they watch the actress play a protofeminist version of Snow White in the newly-released Mirror Mirror - though, there’s already been some disgruntlement expressed about Jamie Campbell Bower (Camelot) being up to portray Jonathan “Jace” Wayland in the adaptation.

For those not familiar, here is a synopsis for the first of Clare’s Mortal Instruments novels (subtitled “City of Bones”):

In ‘City of Bones’, fifteen-year-old Clary Fray is introduced to the world of the Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world. And she’s introduced with a vengeance, when Clary’s mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque monster sent by the evil and powerful Shadowhunter, Valentine.

Principal photography on The Mortal Instruments is prepped to begin this August in Toronto, with Zwart working from an adapted screenplay penned by relative unknown Jessica Postigo and I. Marlene King (a writer/co-showrunner for Pretty Little Liars). Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne (The Golden Compass) are producing, along with Robert Kulzer (the Resident Evil franchise).

How about it, Mortal Instruments fans – do you like the way this adaptation is shaping up so far?

  1. you know, with harry potter done and twilight almost done, and with the demand of these young adult book movie adaptations. I wish they would make artemis fowl into a movie. they were planning on it at one time several years ago. I would like someone to try and resurrect that movie adaptation. I think that would be a good series to see on the big screen if done right.

    • I second that

  2. I’m really anxious about this film. Early on in the writing there were some REALLY questionable decisions made (they cut out freaking MAGNUS BANE) and I’m not sure they’re going to manage all the complex subplots…

  3. Lilly collins is bad very bad in my opinion

  4. Although Lily Colin’s is a decent actress, I don’t want her to be the face of a book adaption with such a big fan base. Me, being a fan of the books, would rather have Jane Levy (Suburgatory) be Clary. And SOMEONE ELSE FOR JACE!

  5. I like Lilly. I agree that it will be very hard to capture the complexity story anything under 2 1/2 hrs is going to be difficult. But I’m excited my daughter and I have been huge fans for yrs!!! I will be very upset if Magnus Bane was cut!! He is a huge part of the story!!
I ask the screen play writers to please please try to stick to the books as much as possible!!

    • Luckily I don’t think Cassandra Clare is going to consent to a Magnus-less screenplay. She already killed the script once when they cut him out, she’d do it again.

  6. plz bring Gaspal Ulliel and Matt Dallas to the screen.

  7. They cut out MAGNUS?? you can’t have the story without him! I completely see the vacancy for young adult based movies just like there had been a previous vancancy for young adult literature and thats taken off will the movie media format thanks to things such has HG and HP. But if they mess it up too much fans will know and will speak up. with the number of fans out there considering the number of books sold they won’t be quiet either.

  8. Please recast jace!!! That is a great possible bonus to the switch up.

  9. I wish they would recast Jaces actor

  10. I’m sorry but Jamie cambell is no Jace. (at all)

    • Yes I am replying again !!!!! Jamie Cambell is no Jace. He just doesn’t have the right body for him. Sure he’s a good actor…. But no Jace. Peace out

  11. Actually Magnus will be in the movie that is one of the reasons that the screenplay had to be rewritten that was confirmed by Cassandra Clare a few months ago! So happy that they are back on track and have a release date! Also I don’t agree with some people actor and actress bashing on here just let them do their work then watch the movie when it releases reserve your judgements until then.

  12. Lily Collins may fit the role of Clary but I hope they can consider another the actor for Jace Wayland, for me Alex Pettyfer would be a great option for the role. They cannot cut Magnus’ role in the series since he’s been a huge part of the story since the very beginning. I am a huge fan of Cassandra Clare’s books and I’m so excited for the upcoming film adaptation of City of Bones.
