It's sort of Rome in a medieval fantasy setting.
Don't focus too much about the dragons please! Don't go Eragon or Harry Potter on us!
To me it's all about the characters, in all their terrible, vile and unpredictable beauty.
Also, it's important with the horrific moments (molten crown anyone?), that keeps reminding the reader that this is an adult fantasy.
Oh, and the FOOD!!!

The pilot of Game of Thrones has been filmed on location in the Harland and Wolff paint hall in Belfast docks. The site is famous as the location of the building of the famous ship Titanic.

The pilot was successful and HBO have now agreed to the filming of the entire first series in Belfast.

dennis - i think you would also agree that it's not just the violence, but the very adult situations and language it contains. I'm interested in how HBO treats/depicts the relationship between Daenarys and Khal Drogo and the Dothraki way of "doing" things. Will the script writers take a little liberty and make her a few years older or will we be visually assaulted by images of sex with a 13 year old? As much as I really like the books, seeing that on screen may even be a bit much for me.

Saw an update on this story in Empire regarding Jason Momoa playing Conan: "Conan isn't the first mighty warrior he's played. He will appear as Khal Drogo in the HBO pilot for Game of Thrones, after impressing (read: scaring witless) the producers by performing the haka in his audition. The show, based on George R. R. Martin's wild, twisted medieval fantasy novels, is likely to be picked up, which might cause something of a scheduling problem for Momoa."

They need more big Hollywood stars. My casting suggestions:
Ned Stark: Brad Pitt
Catelyn Star: Sandra Bullock
King Robert Baratheon: John Goodman
Theon Greyjoy: Jason Shwartzman
Sansa and Arya will be played by Mary Kate and Ashleigh Olsen
Tywin Lannister: Alan Rickman
Jaime Lannister: Matt Damon
Cersei Lannister: Cameron Diaz
Tyrion Lannister: Danny Devito

Post bump.

The pilot has been fully cast and is filming now in Belfast. I've now read the whole series (so far; finish the next book soon, George, okay?) and am pumped for this show.

Yup. I'm also intrigued by the casting of Harry Lloyd, who was a decent Will Scarlett in the BBC's mostly godawful ROBIN HOOD and was also in a DOCTOR WHO two-parter (as the creepy public schoolboy alien in Family of Blood/Human Nature). He's been a little broad in the roles I've seen him in, but he's got that demented quality Viserys needs. With good direction - like from the multi-award-winning director of THE STATION AGENT ;) - he should do well.

Sean Bean?! Yes!!! I'm really excited to see him get a role like that one. He's always getting cast as villains or compromised characters outside of his work as Richard Sharpe. This is a well-deserved role for him, and one I think he'll excel in.

I also think Addy has been handed a great role here, too. It's not the typical kind he's been given in the past. This show is showing true promise with each bit of news... which is also a good sign.

I'm an enomous fan of these novels and am so happy that HBO has picked up the series! Like everyone else here I loved Rome and see A Game of Thrones as a similar venue. Just need to make it clear though that this will be a show for adults and mature teenagers! Not for the weak stomachs...
I hope Peter Dinklage is cast as Tyrion, I thought Sophia Myles would make a gret Cercei, Philip Winchester as Jaime, thought Gemma Ward would be perfect for Dany... I could go on and on. I'm assuming most of the cast will be from the U.K. or Ireland, unless they get an American actor who can do a believable British accent, as the case of Dinklage and Winchester.

I just have to say that I am also on the edge of my seat waiting for both the T.V. series AND the next two books...

I just hope they portray the characters in the series as good as Martin describes them in his books.

just went to the Winteriscoming site...speculation and the evidence is leading to the conclusion that HBO may be picking up the series outright. They are spending a ton of dough on the pilot and have just been given free rent at one of europes largest production facilities( paint hall) in Belfast ,Ireland. Filming in Morrocco and Scotland apparently...yippppeeeee

This is a series that will knock readers on their butt. Mr.Martin is indeed a cruel writer. Character you grow attached to die horrible deaths and you never see it coming. Other characters you like are so tortured you almost wish he'd kill them, just to put them out of their misery.(like little Arya Stark)....It is an amazing read...not only for fantasy fans, but fans of great writing. I would describe the books as a ' medievel political thriller' with a hint of magic and lots of battles and intrigue. Thankyou Screen Rant for covering this story. I think HBO will turn this into a masterpiece....be forewarned....this is not a series for kids...it features brutal violence, but not needlessly. Mr.Martin writes the way things would really be in That world...,people are often cruel and he writes it that way.....most characters are more gray than black or white...it's hard to pick a side LOL

Not quite 40. There's been 25 POV characters, but some of them were one-shots who won't reappear. But put in the non-POV characters in AGoT who also play a big role (Robert, Tywin, Jaime, Cersei, Littlefinger, Luwin, Robb etc) and you get up to about 20 pretty easily. If it's any help though, ROME had a larger cast of characters if you threw in the recurring-but-not-main characters as well.

In addition to confirmation of the filming in Northern Ireland, there are strong but unconfirmed rumours that there will be additional unit filming in Morocco and Scotland. No casting announced yet, but it's coming soon-ish I believe.

As for Cersei, a lot of people were suggesting Tricia Helfer, but she's been attached to another project, so it's not likely to be her.
