The writers and directors of the much beloved The LEGO Movie, Chris Lord and Phil Miller, have become a power-house team of humorists in Hollywood over the course of the past five years. Following early acclaim lauded onto their animated family feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs in 2009, the Dartmouth College duo soon found equal success in adapting 21 Jump Street as a studio comedy, before lending their talents as producers of the FOX show The Last Man On Earth.
Given their success so far in producing original programming for television, Lord and Miller have just announced Son of Zorn, another project that they are currently working on that features a premise sure to please any fan of a certain cartoon of the mid 1980s.
According to an official FOX press release, David Madden, the president of entertainment, has announced the network has ordered the entire first season of Son of Zorn, a live-action/animation hybrid comedy to debut during the 2016-2017 season. The new show will star Jason Sudeikis, as the He-Man-esque, Zorn character, with Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Tim Meadows (Saturday Night Live) in supporting roles.
Read the official plot synopsis for the new series below:
“Upon arriving home on Earth for the first time in 10 years, Zorn, a fully animated, legendary warrior, finds that reconnecting with his live-action son Alan and ex-wife Edie, while suffering through a mundane office job and the banality of suburban life, is harder than waging actual war in his distant, mystical homeland of Zephyria.”
Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne (Wilfred) will write the pilot and serve as showrunners, with Seth Cohen serving as executive-producer, and Eric Apple (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as director and co-executive producer. With so much talent working behind the scenes, Lord and Miller may just have another off-beat success on their hands, a sentiment that Madden echoed when stating:
“This is utterly unique — there has literally never been a show like this. And, of course, it is very, very funny. The fantastically talented duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller are yet again delivering precedent-setting television. Jason Sudeikis makes his animated character sound and feel live-action, and Cheryl, Johnny and Tim have incredible chemistry with him that crosses formats, genres, and galaxies.”
Fans of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series may feel right at home with the projected exploits of Lord and Miller’s Zorn character. As for everyone else who has enjoyed anything the filmmaking team has produced in the past half decade, there will undoubtedly be something to enjoy in the alternative-style comedy series for those otherwise unfamiliar with the childhood property.
Son of Zorn will debut during the 2016-2017 season on FOX.
