‘Son of God’ Trailer: He Is Coming Soon

Fox is putting a lot of faith in Son of God, the theatrical version of the History Channel’s March 2013 miniseries, The Bible. Following the massive ratings success of the 10-episode series, starring Diogo Morgado as the titular son, Hearst, half of the network’s parent company (the other being Disney), teamed up with 20th Century Fox to adapt it into a 175-minute feature film, which will focus solely on the life and resurrection of Jesus. Using selections from the broadcast version of The Bible, it’ll also include a few extra scenes not aired on TV.

The official press release describes the film in full:

This major motion picture event — an experience created to be shared among families and communities across the U.S. — brings the story of Jesus’ life to audiences through compelling cinematic storytelling that is both powerful and inspirational. Told with the scope and scale of an action epic, the film features powerful performances, exotic locales, dazzling visual effects and a rich orchestral score from Oscar®-winner Hans Zimmer. Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado portrays the role of Jesus as the film spans from his humble birth through his teachings, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection.

It’s possible Fox and Heart are looking to 2004′s Passion of the Christ for an idea of how successful Son of God might be. The Mel Gibson-helmed epic brought in over $600 million at the box office; then again, it had Gibson’s name behind it. Of course, even if Son of God flops, Fox and THC can rest easy knowing they didn’t lose as much money as they could have, as they’ve only had to worry about editing and distribution costs.

History The Bible Son of God Son of God Trailer: He Is Coming Soon

Further comparisons are bound to be drawn to Passion of the Christ, but judging from the trailer — and that the footage is from a History Channel miniseries — we’re looking at a much less graphic take on the story. The real question now is, how much more can you do with Jesus? It’s a tale everyone, religious or not, is familiar with. From the Son of God trailer the biggest difference I can see is that this Jesus seems the tiniest bit cheeky.

2014, as it turns out, is shaping up to be a big year for the bible epic. Just one month after Son of God premieres, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah will hit theaters. It’s too bad they don’t each open just a few weeks later — Easter falls on April 20 this year, and a Son of GodNoah double feature would have been a great way to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.

Do you guys think Son of God will be as successful at the theater?

  1. I can see it being a success, sole reason being ‘Murica. Some people in certain parts of the country will lap this up and maybe go to repeat viewings.

The only God I’m interested in at the movies next year ends in zilla.

    • There you go again, Dazz, being mildly insulting to audiences, although it is perhaps not meant. By “lap this up”, it could be interpreted that you believe “people in certain parts of the country” will go to repeat viewings because they are ignorant or naive, rather than faithful, open-minded, and searching.

      Enjoy your god-zilla.

      • Nope, not at all.

What I meant was that the religious states will go see it over and over and that’s where the main bank will emanate from.

I think you have a problem comprehending things that you read. I’ll bear that in mind next time I post so I can have my regular comment and then a special dumbed-down version for you to understand what I meant.

        • Oh and I’m also open-minded. Completely spiritual, I just don’t agree with organised religion because I find it to be a disgusting way to pigeon-hole people into different groups rather than embracing the main message of love and good will to everyone.

It’s like saying “we believe the same things that group does but our group is much better because ours is the only true God”, completely ignoring that rather than fight each other over who’s more correct, they should join together and share ideals.

          • …because not all religions believe the same thing, Dazz, and thus, not all religions are as close to ultimate truth.

We can and should all agree, however, to live and let live, but even that is not the way of some…

        • I don’t believe I’ve been mistaken about you at all, Dazz, as also evidenced, now, by your “clarification”, in which your comments imply greater intelligence. I would suggest, rather, that you have greater intolerance.

        • The “mildly insulting” thing…there is a bit of that, I would humbly suggest. It involves not just what you meant, but what other readers/commenters might likely take away from how it is worded.

  2. I saw and enjoyed this on the History Channel. It is far from perfect, but at times, it is quite insperational and moving. My favorite portrayal is still Jesus of Nazareth.

    • The last show I saw about Jesus was The Lost 40 Days a while back but that’s the problem. The story is so well known that it’s hard to find myself interested any more.

Then again, I bet early Christians said the same when a thousand or so year old story was retold with Jesus as the main character instead of whichever Sumerian demigod it was originally (and Greek and Roman and etc).

      • Rolling my eyes here, Dazz. Instead of posting comments that are going to be mildly insulting to some, might I suggest that you simply don’t see the film.

        • Why should I when actually, I’m interested in seeing it?

Maybe for Christmas, you should receive some glasses and the power of comprehension.

Now THAT was the only insulting thing I’ve typed on this article. It’s people like you who ruin my enjoyment of this site. Do you love me or something because you seem to be always there, trying to find a reason, no matter how ridiculous or pedantic, to respond to me while also attempting to belittle.

          • You’re interested in seeing it? Really?

“The only God I’m interested in at the movies next year ends in zilla.”

          • The only insulting thing is your suggestion that he get glasses? Not implying that the story of Jesus that millions of people believe is a big lie? Or that the vast majority of people in the world involved in organized religion are part of a disgusting segregating plot? Give me a break…

            • I think Dazz is trying to say that he didn’t set out to insult anyone when he commented on this atricle. But then Jeff jumped on him and the two started a dialogue that annoyed Dazz to the point where he finally, intentionally insulted organized religion.

              • That may be the case. He was subtle in his initial insult, but when confronted, became more overt.

              • I didn’t make an issue of it, but in his initial comment, he also referred to America as ‘Murica…another subtle insult.

                • He wasn’t subtle in his initial remark. He was clearly making fun of redneck fundamentalists, as is his right. And he had a point that that they would be responsible for most of this film’s revenue. And are you really going to say that you think that his use of “‘Murica” was an insult against this country and not a swipe at a marginal group of people who live here?

                  • Ah, first you claim, “Dazz is trying to say he didn’t set out to insult anyone”, and now you contend, “He wasn’t subtle in his initial remark. He was clearly making fun of redneck funadmentalists.”

And yea, sure, it is his “right” to do so, as it it yours to agree with and/or defend him, but it is also my right to define it how I see it…bigoted, ignorant, naive, and even racist.

                    • Okay.

                    • Wait. You mean racist against rednecks?

                • Hey Dazz and Jeff

I am saying Jesus is fake story for clueless little children and no i will not apologize for it

Christianity the only religion that paints a white man at the center of black man role, this Jesus is not real. No one can walk on water and come back from the dead

                  • Jesus Begins. He’s always a hunky hippie, isn’t he? To me, I couldn’t help noticing how this movie fits so comfortably with all the other sci-fi, fantasy, superhero movies over the last decade or so. He reminded me a lot of Aragorn.

                  • @Jacob,

Jesus was Jewish. Regardless about the color of his skin, the most important thing is that he was the messiah. Scholars cannot agree definitively upon the color of his skin, and I personally think that is a good thing. It makes us more worldly.

Plus, the Holy Spirit and God the Father has no ethnic background.

…but, I do respect your opinion.

  3. The look on Jesus’ face when Judas kisses him. One of the greatest things about Jesus is that he could have stopped it at any time, but he knew he had to go through with it. The beginning of this trailer didn’t really have me too excited, but now I’m actually quiet interested.

    • quite*

      oops

    • I already saw this when it aired as part of the History Channel’s “The Bible.” It was good, and I would recommend seeing it, but I thought Jesus of Nazareth and The Passion of the Christ were more compelling and memorable, although the latter only dealt with Christ’s crucifixion.

  4. I wonder how is going to end.

  5. plot twist: jesus ressurects.

    m night shyamalan approves this.

  6. i heard Kanye West makes an appereance in this

  7. Send your donations to your local organized relious belief……. I’m sure they will make good use of it. On another note….. I can’t wait for the evolution part of this film to come out.

  8. Too bad they completely changed the source material…. PASSS

  9. Looks fairly high-quality in production values, at least.

I can see it being quite successful at the box office.

  10. Fiction at its best….. bravo

  11. I think it would be much cooler to see a movie based off the life of Jesus minus the miracles. Ghandi once said that he didn’t much like Christianity because he believed there had never been a true Christian since Jesus. Jesus, regardless of religion or miracles, was a truly inspiring political and philosophical figure in history. It would be great, I think, to see the story of a poor carpenter’s son who is mentored by John the Baptist, and spreads a message of love and acceptance, before being killed to send a message to the Jewish people, of which he was a member (most Christians kind of block that part out, or like to say “well he was different”). It could be a truly inspiring story of a man who truly believes he has a greater purpose in life set against the most powerful empire in history.

    • Signed in just to say that THIS is the story I keep hoping people will tell. The Biblical account is so familiar and rote at this point that it’s extremely difficult to elicit a response from an audience who knows every. single. emotional. beat. BUT reading between the lines of the Biblical account would draw out some of the emotional complexity that necessarily exists — some of the personality and conflict that colors a person’s inner life, Jesus/Joshua/Yeshua absolutely included — if anyone’s brave enough to do it.

  12. The trailer actually looks impressive. It has the look and feel of a big budget studio film. I don’t know whether it becomes a success, but I might go for this if the reviews are on the better side.

  13. Why would you pay money to see something that you can see for free on tv?

    • This is more for those who haven’t seen the TV miniseries….like me!

  14. First Noah and now Jesus, congrats Hollywood for bringing to life principles that raise the spiritual bar for a morally bankrupt world. I hope they stick to Holy writ and prosper!

    • Who’d have ever thought religion could be financially profitable?

      • It’s a miracle!

  15. This will be followed up by a movie about Mohammed.
25% of the world will then proceed to break out in riots.

  16. A History Channel TV show about Jesus? I wonder how they are going to incorporate aliens into this show?

  17. why is he white?

    • Indeed, and with pearly white teeth to boot

    • God does not have an ethnicity.

    • The actor, Diogo Morgado, is Portuguese. Or were you referring more to the fact that everyone seems to have a British accent? Because that is rather anachronistic…

  18. Sheesh not another Jesus movie, we need a Satan origins movie.

    • Hey man, I’m working on that. Think the visual style of 300, the epic battles of The Lord of The Rings, and the touching emotion of Les Miserables.

  19. Very good. I can’t wait to compare this movie to the bible since the movie is 50% true. Also, Jesus long hair is false. According to research in the bible I find this:

1 Corinthians 11:14 says in the NIV: Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him….?

The interpretation is very clear and Jewish men traditionally kept much shorter hair than Jewish women.

  20. For Zeus’ sake, we’ve had enough Jesus movies.

    • Keep your mind and heart open!!

  21. Hisroqry at its finest…..Bravo. It was an awesome mini series!

  22. Meant History at its finest and Jesus was only half Jewish!

  23. Another glorification of the biggest myth in the history of mankind! The cult followers of the myth will love it!

  24. Love the people that call it a myth But yet it has been proven time and time again to be a FACT that it happened! He was even written about in Roman manuscripts.

    • Yeah, I think its rather funny. If some of the aesthetes (and non-religious types) actually did some research, they would have found out that Jesus actually existed. rofl…

Do you know what? Everyone will find their own way, and its not up to you and I to make any judgements. God has time.

      • I agree. One cannot dispute the fact that Jesus existed…they can only dispute that he is the Son of God, of one essence with our Father, the Creator. It is senseless to debate these people, which is why I have not responded to most of their comments. Rather, I just roll my eyes, sigh, and hope that they do indeed open themselves up one day, so that they can eventually find their way.

  25. The only God I’m interested in at the movies next year ends in zilla. Hahahaha…very funny comment. But this will be a success at the box office cause of the religious context. No way, it flops.

  26. THIS IS GREAT NEWS OF A FILM ABOUT JESUS, I HAVE OFTEN WONDERED WILL THERE BE ANOTHER ONEOF HIM AFTER THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST I REALLY FELT THAT FOLK REALLY NEEDED TO SEE THE WHOLE STORY. SOME I KNOW WOULD NOT GO TO SEE THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST SOME WHERE AFRAID OF IT. INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE HONESTLY I KNOW SOME THAT SEEM TO FEEL THE SAME AND WONT WATCH IT. SO THIS FILM WOULD BE GREAT MIND YOU I LOVED THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST AND SOUNDTRACK WAS BRILLIANT TOO.

I THINK IN EACH OF US ALL THERE IS A HUNGER AND THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT JESUS THAT ALL OF US FIND CHALLENGING, INTRIEGING, LONGING, CONFLICTING , AMAZING, RADICAL, LOVING AND PERSONAL AND ALL THESE THINGS SO
RELIGION IT WILL ALWAYS ATRACT US ALL, AND WHEN ITS JESUS MANY COME TO COMMENT AND I THINK ITS GREAT THE CONTRIBUTION FROM ATHIESTS, NON BELIEVERS, WE ALL HAVE A CONTRIBUTION IN SOME SHAPE OR FORM, I TAUGHT THE LINE ABOUT ZILLA WS BRILLIANT WE NEED A BIT OF HOUMOUR, IM SURE GOD HAS GOOD LAUGH TOO, HE MADE US IN HIS OWN IMAGE SO THAT MEANS IF WE LAUGH HE LAUGHS TOO. WE CAN GET TOO SERIOUS ABOUT RELIGION AND GOD,,

I DEEPLY FEEL JESUS HAD A GREAT SENSE OF HOUMUR WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE TIME THE THE APOSTELS WHERE GIVENG OUT ABOUT A CERTAIN VILLAGE THAT WOULD NOT EXCEPT HIM AND THE JOHN AND JAMES SAID ”LORD WILL WE SEND DOWN FIRE” AND JEUSUS TALKED TO THEM AND CALLED THEM SONS OF THUNDER BECAUSE THEY WHERE ALWAYS ON THE EXTREAM A BIT AND FIREY, AND HE CALLED THEM SONS OF THUNDER HE WAS HAVING A JOKE BY CALLING THEM SONS OF THUNDER,, I HEARD THAT FROM A VERY GOOD THEOLOGIN, ALSO WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT JESUS HE WENT TO MEALS AND HOUSES, AND THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A SENSE OF HOMOUR IN HIM AT THESE EVENTS.

SURE LOOK AT THE WIT AND THE WAY HE HAD WITH THE PHARISISES WHEN HE SAID TEAR THIS TEMPLE DOWN AND I WILL BULD IT UP IN THREE DAYS ! JESUS WAS SO INVOLVED IN LIFE AND IS LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER WHAT EVER BELIEF YOU COME FROM YOU ALL HAVE A CONTRIBUTION.

I HAVE MET SOME OF THE MOST HOLIEST PEOPLE THAT WILL NEVER DARKEN A CHRUCH DOOR, I HAVE MET HOLY FOLK THAT HAVE HEADS SO BIG THAT IM AMAZED THEY CAN GET IT IN THE CHURCH DOOR, AND I HAVE MET GOOD HARD WORKING CHRISTAINS,MOSELMS, ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE WHO SHOW ME, CHRIST IN THEIR LIVES WITHOUT THE PREACHING ..
ANOTHER ASPECT OF JESUS IS THAT IT WAS A NON BELIEVER THAT FORMED THE PART OF THE LITURGY, WHEN THE ROMAN SOLIDER WENT TO JESUS AND SAID MY SERVANT IS ILL PLEASE I AM NOT WORHTY THAT YOU SHOULD ENTER UNDER MY ROOF BUT ONLY SAY THE WORD AND HE SHALL BE HEALED,, JESUS SAID OF THIS MAN NOT IN ALL OF JERUSALEM HAVE I SEEN SUCH FATIH,, JESUS BECAME THE QUESTIONER ,, AND ASTONISHED BY THE FAITH THE SOLDER HAD IN HIM, THE SOLDIER EXPLAINED HOW HE GAVE ORDERS AND COMMANDS AND THEY WHERE DONE,,, SO EVERY SINGLE PERSON HAS A PART,,

I WANT TO LEAVE WITH AN OLD LITTLE STORY THAT SOME OF YOU KNOW,, THERES AN ATHIEST ONE SUNDAY MORNING OUT AND ABOUT ON HIS BIKE AND HE IS CYCLING BY A CHURCH AND HE GETS OF HIS BIKE TO SEE THE WHOLE HEAVENS OPEN AND JESUS
APPEARS TO THE ATHIEAST ,, AND SAYS WHY WONT YOU GO IN,, AND THE ATHIEST SAYS WELL ITS LIKE THIS MANY YEARS AGO I TRIED TO BUT YOU WHERE NOT THERE, AND THE CHRISTIANS THERE ACTED LIKE THEY WHERE ABOVE YOU OR SOMETHING AND ACTED AS IF THEY HAD A DIRECT LINE TO YOU AND THAT THEY ACTED AS IF THEY WHERE SO RIGHT, AND I WAS SO WRONG YOUR LOVE WAS NOT IN THEM, THEY WHERE TO PIOUS, AND THEY CONTROLED AND KEPT THE LOCAL CHURH FOR THEMSELFS, AND THERE WAS TO MUCH CLICK GOING ON TOO AND THIER PLANS FOR YOU AND THEN THEY WOULD FIGHT AMONG THEMSELFS EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK EXCEPT SUNDAY AND SING HYMS AND THEY WHERE TO HOLY INDEED FOR ME WAY TO HOLY MY LORD I WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH,,,

AND I HAVE TRIED HARD BRING MYSELF TO GO IN AGAIN BUT NO! ,, AND JESUS SAYS LISTEN BROTHER I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET IN THERE FOR YEARS MYSELF,,

TAKE CARE AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THIS FILM ALL THE BEST BLESSINGS DAVE
SORRY IF WENT ON,, ALL THE BEST

  27. Hello

  28. I think the original title of this movie was “Hot Jesus”
