‘Son of Batman’ Trailer: Meet Damian Wayne

While the next big-screen adventure of the Caped Crusader has hit yet another speed-bump, DC Entertainment’s animated ventures continue apace. The first of two Batman-centric animated films to be released in 2014, Son of Batman has debuted an impressive first trailer.

Shared by TV Guide, this preview introduces a character that may not be known to those only familiar with the Dark Knight’s cinematic adventures: Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce and femme fatale Talia al Ghul. Damian originally debuted in a polarizing 2006 comic book story penned by Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman), and has been a consistent fixture in the Batman side of the DC Universe ever since. Son of Batman appears to be a loose adaptation of that same initial storyline.

The trailer itself is fairly heartening. With pleasingly Legend of Korra-like animation and a solid voice cast, Son of Batman shows a good deal of early promise.

That said, some of the changes to the source material’s storyline are odd – though not necessarily causes for outright alarm. For instance, the addition of Deathstroke the Terminator (a.k.a. Slade Wilson, Arrow‘s current Big Bad) makes sense within the assassin-choked world of the story, but could end up more distracting than advantageous.

As the preview suggests, Damian Wayne eventually took up the cape and cowl of Robin – a position he held for almost half a decade in real time. It will be interesting to see if this movie version of the character engenders the same strong feelings (both positive and negative) that his comics counterpart did upon his introduction. If so, we may see more animated versions of the deadly child in the years to come.

Son of Batman features the voice talents of Jason O’Mara (Justice League: War), Stuart Allan (Rise of the Guardians), Thomas Gibson (Criminal Minds), Morena Baccarin (Firefly), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad).

Son of Batman will arrive on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD in the spring of 2014.

  1. More excited for this than Justice League War. Those clips were BRUTAL. On the other hand this trailer is AMAZING. Looks like its going to be another great DC animated movie.

    • Agreed

  2. A bit puzzled that O’Mara’s voice seems fine in this trailer but was completely off in the JL:War clip.

    • Yeah I had to look at the trailer description just to make sure it was the same actor, weird.

    • Noticed that too.

  3. Why can’t the DC live actin movies be this great? Not one of their animated movies has disappointed.

    • I agree. Love the animated movies but the live movies are just so urgh.

  4. Very, very excited to see this.

Hopefully they keep building a new DCAU. Maybe one day they’ll bring back Hamill and Conroy and the rest for a reunion story.

  5. hmmm… it looks good, but Deathstroke sound like Kevin Conroy’s Bruce Wayne a bit too much for me. Its a little disorienting.

  6. Nice animation style. At last, a DC animation style that actually looks good IMO.

  7. Alright! Kevin Conroy is voicing Batman again I’m disappointed he won’t be in Justice League: War. I also agree the art direction looks great I’m not so much a fan of the background art but the characters are a fine substitute post the Bruce Timm days. Batman: The Animated Series will always be number one!

  8. It’s projects like this one that continue to make DC relevant. Kudos!

  9. only good voice cast that came from DC animated movies was John DiMaggio as Joker…Robin’s voice sounds so little to be Robin imo. Batman was ok….

  10. It would be nice to see movies centering on characters other than Batman.

Flashpoint Paradox was a very good movie (yes Batman was the prime supporting character) so can’t see another Wonder Woman movie or even a Hawkgirl origin movie?

  11. Looking forward for this much MUCH more than JL: War… I lost interest with that one eversince they kicked Aquaman out from the roster :(

    • They kicked out Aquaman, because they are making a Aquaman focused movie soon. Don’t know why that means they kicked him out, but I am excited to see him get some attention.

  12. “Deathstroke killed my grandfather”. Deathstroke as the main villain? Now I’m quite excited for this movie than Justice League: WAR.

  13. This looks great. Deathstroke looks cool.

  14. Hmm… maybe I’m too much with “team Terry” to enjoy this.

Terry McGinnis, he was never a robin.

The animation was clean. I don’t know where in Timm-verse this would fit, maybe its a splinter from another branch.

  15. It’s so weird. Thomas Gibson’s Deathstroke sounds so much like Jonathon Frakes when he played David Xanatos on Gargoyles.

    • Sounds more like Kevin Conroy’s Batman

        • *that it doesn’t sound

        • It still sounds like Conroy to me.

  16. Sorry, just can’t get into a child superhero. Looks lame to me.

  17. Looks good; exceptionally better than JLA: War. It’s funny how the casting choices jump from show to show. There’s often a presence from Firefly, then it was Castle, now with this and War it’s Criminal Minds. I never would have imagined Thomas Gibson in a role like this, but I look forward to seeing what he does with the role. As for O’Mara, he’s a likable actor and sounds better-suited to be the Bat this time around. He sounds a bit like a younger version of Bruce Greenwood’s Batman to me.

I’ve never cared that much for Robin…

I wouldn’t mind seeing DC explore other characters and their rich histories and worlds. Hawkman / Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Birds of Prey, etc. I’m not sure what the cost of an animated feature is, but surely they have the funding to delve a little deeper into the talent pool.

  18. Sorry…never was I ever interested in seeing kid heroes.

  19. Sad Bats Jr chose to use Robins costume. He should have had his own costume or stuck with the black hoodie.

  20. Oh great more Batman. I’m guessing something Superman related is next.

  21. Animation looks really good, except when the characters are talking. Is it just me, or does Damien look like the only one to show any kind of emotion in his facial expressions?

  22. Looks pretty cool. I didn’t know Batman had a chin strap? :)

  23. Ridiculous…anytime a show has a beginning title “Son of” you can’t take it seriously at all. DC is really milking out Batman as much as they can and it’s just becoming sad at this point.

    • what’s sad is that it’s obvious that all you know about batman is from tv and never once bothered to pick up a comic.

      • Well said!

      • I’m a huge fan of Batman and to let you know I did read the comics, as a kid, so I’m fully aware of everything that’s going on in the world of Batman. The franchise is just becoming episodic and formulaic like Godzilla where everyone is just fully saturated with it and believe me people will get tired of it and we’ll go through a period where we won’t hear anything about Batman anymore because people will want something different instead of the typical story of something tragic happens and blah blah blah Batman has to save the day of his Soap Opera life. I prefer the Batman animated series atleast the tv show had some depth to it instead of this ridiculous story of some kid running around in tights thinking he can destroy the worlds deadliest assassin.

        • The Batman “saga” if you will, has grown and developed for years. Just the idea that people will be sick and tired of the character any time soon is ridiculous, especially considering his recent film trilogy is made up of what are considered to be some of the greatest superhero movies of all time. Like him or not, the stories have certainly NOT been the “same thing again and again”. The character has been around for 75 years and has gone through many different interpretations and stories, he’s not going away any time soon.

          • I never said he was going away I’m just saying these animated movies they are coming out with are ridiculous to the point people will just retreat to the comics because those cartoons don’t do batman nor the characters any justice. That’s all I’m saying.

            • I may not agree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it! -Free Waterfall Jr.

  24. Looks cool! Introducing Deathstroke as a major character got me even more excited!
Make a g****** Deathstroke animated film already, DC!

  25. The problem with DC /WB is that their animated movies are waaaaay much cooler than their live action movies.
We have to wait 2 more years for MOS2 . Possibly 3 or 4 more years for JL movie.

  26. Sorry the animation turns me off. Soon everyone will be lithe and have triple D breasts.

  27. Kevin Conroy is batman, any other voice tends to ruin the animation for me…dark knight returns being the exception cause he needed to be much older.

  28. The Animation looks great as always the only thing that worries me is seeing the Butcher Morrison’s name attached to this. Grant Morrison has decimated and obliterated the true essence of Talia. I doubt we will see the TRUE BIRTH of Damian explained here, but well be again force fed that bastardized test tube baby bullcrap that DC likes to shove down peoples throat. O’Niel gave us pure gold when he gave us Talia and only 2 other writers have truely gotten her, Morrison took a complete dump on the character.

I’ve often wondered if this is DC’s plan to keep trashing on the AL Ghul family they sure as hell don’t raise them up to be loved. Had the Al Ghuls belonged to Marvel I know they would have been given thier own title, an a movie would be in the works to give them the ICONIC status they richly deserve.

  29. I don’t like Jason O’Mara (o’hara) as Batman. He is very dry and boring sounding. Hoping he comes off a little better on the film. Talia’s voice actress, is not what I would picture from Talia Al Ghul either. But, once again we will just have to wait and see. It is very interesting, that WB chose to adapt “Batman and Son”, over the Killing Joke, Long Halloween, and KnightFall. 2014 is the Year of Batman, his big 75th Anniversary. It would have been nice to see adaptations of one of those.

Regardless, I will watch this film. Not a big Damian Wayne or Grant Morrison fan for that matter. Personally, “Arkham Asylum: A serious House on Earth” is a better Batman book by Morrison. Nevertheless, I am curious to see how this turns out. Deathstroke seems to be getting the spotlight more too. I am digging that immensley. Maybe we will see a “deathstroke: the terminator” film soon. In any case, more Batman=Happier me =)
