‘Son of Batman’ Preview: Damian Wayne Explained

Published 1 year ago by

Son of Batman is the animated feature adaptation of the “Batman & Son” storyline by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert, and features the introduction of current Robin, Damian Wayne. Like any Batman character origin story, there are elements of pain and darkness in the tale of how young Damian (son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul) is brought up in a world of assassins, only to witness his grandfather Ra’s al Ghul struck down by the mercenary Deathstroke.

A new preview featurette from DC Universe looks into the history of the Damian Wayne character to basically help fans who may not yet be in the know discover who this “Son of Batman” is, and how deep his comic book roots go.

Personally speaking, the introduction of Damian Wayne into the regular DC Universe (as opposed to his “Elsewords” alt-universe origins) was something I was skeptical of at first; but in the years since, the character has really grown on me. His darker take on the Robin mantle, juxtaposition to Bruce Wayne and even his brief partnership with the Dick Grayson Batman were all intriguing, marking Damian as one of the more successful superhero offspring in a long time (at least in my book).

In the film, Jason O’Mara (Justice League: War) once again voices Batman; Stuart Allan voices Damian Wayne; Morena Baccarin (Homeland) voices Talia al Ghul; Thomas Gibson voices Slade Wilson/Deathstroke; and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) voices Ra’s al Ghul.

The film will adhere close to the Morrison/Kubert story, meaning that Dr. Kirk Langstrom (Xander Berkley) will be making an appearance as Man-Bat as well!

  1. Thanks and finally some back story for the movie.

  2. Morena Baccarin would be perfect as thalia al ghul in a “real” movie

  3. kofi killin it once again

  4. Was iffy with O’mara as batman in JLA:War, but he’s grown on me. He sounds like a gruff Adam West. It’s an interesting clash of nostalgia and new 52.

  5. So, will they have the events that take place in the comics or change things to feature certain characters in future animated movies?

Also, to show how ridiculous people are, there were a lot of complaints about Kubert and Morrison “lacking talent” and being “overrated hacks” on DC’s Facebook page over the weekend. Don’t know where those complaints came from but it gets annoying reading supposed fans whining and hating everything DC do.

    • just download it for free off of http://www.thepiratebay.se or one of its many proxies once it is realsed on dvd for free

      • Dude, stop promoting the ‘illegal’ way…
I think everyone here ALREADY knows about it, so please don’t reply everyone with the same thing over and over again.

  6. The animation on this movie is as usual good for DC comics animated movies. The only thing that really worries me is the fact that Grant Morrison’s name is attached to it. Given the fact that he completely decimated the TRUE character and essence of Talia Al Ghul in that horrid book Batman Incorporated this past summer. I fear what story they will tell, as any true Talia fan knows. Damian was BORN and not created by some test tube baby BS that DC likes to shove down people’s throats, Son of the Demon written by Mike Burr and Jerry Bingham was the true Damian Wayne Origin story. DC and it’s cadre of writers ALWAYS forget this and only wish to paint Talia in a bad light. Dennis O’Niel gave us gold with Talia and only two other writers have ever done her right, Morrison is not one of those. He himself is quoted in not reading the real origin, plus he wrote Batman Incorporated as a way to work through his own parents divorce. The man needed therapy before he shredded apart the beauty and amazing Talia and her beloved son.

  7. Can’t wait to see Nightwing vs. Damian! :D Nightwing is gonna kick his behind so hard lol At least it’s supposed to be that way. Just my opinion.

  8. Well if Kevin Conroy isn’t voicing batman? = No purchase WB misses another sale

    • Just download it like I downloaded every dc and marvel animation or live action movie. Heck I downloaded so much free legal files off the internet I don’t get why ppl give their money to these ppl for crap after Hollywood crap. http://www.thepiratebay.se you will be able to find it there once it comes out

  9. Voice acting and animation is looking like a big improvement over Justice League War. I’m looking forward to this, can’t wait to FINALLY see a movie with Damian :)

  10. Honestly I would pay to see this movie on the big screen. I miss teen or even adult animated movies being at the cinema

  11. Wow Kofi “DC” Outlaw you would write this article. You guys never talk about Marvel. Like X-Men or Spiderman or Captain America. Wow.

:P Nah, great article and can’t wait to watch this!

    • I thiiink each writers in SR have been assigned to cover different fields, perhaps due to their interest as well :D
So if Kofi is doing DC, prolly Rob is doing Marvel. I don’t think that’s an issue cause other sites (the ‘credible’ ones I mean) do the same thing ;)

  12. Really looking forward to this movie..

    Spoilers Below !

    Comic Book Spoilers———————

Damian was a brilliant character..i miss the guy..batman had a real part of family for the first time after his parents…it was finally starting to get better..batman was finally starting to get happier…and…………..Poor Damian..

  13. Wow, was JL War really that bad? I haven’t seen it yet but based on what what I’ve heard it’s sounding like it didn’t really hit the marks expected. I guess I will check it out tonight and see how it compared to the Flash Paradoux one, LOL.

  14. Can’t wait for the action…..

  15. Personally, I’m looking forward to this MUCH MUCH better than JL:War, and unless someone lend me a copy I’m not watching that one cause I’m definitely not getting one. And not because I dislike the New 52, but I prefer the comic better than what I’ve seen so far in various clips. The reviews so far have been mediocre anyway, and when almost all of them speak the same thing, that’s not a good thing.

I’m saving my cash for Son of Batman instead, even if just for the sake of Nightwing… ;)

  16. JUST finished watching it. Honestly. Not that good. 7/10
