NBC’s Saturday Night Live spinoff titled Weekend Update: Summer Edition gets an August premiere date. NBC’s venerable sketch comedy institution Saturday Night Live has always tended to thrive creatively during times of political turmoil, and that has perhaps never proven more true than during the presidency of Donald Trump. Whether one supports Trump or not, it’s impossible to deny that there’s always a steady supply of news emerging from his White House, and the latest season of SNL had a fun time each week satirizing said news in a playful manner.

With SNL’s season 42 ratings soaring upward, it’s no wonder that NBC has chosen now to resurrect Weekend Update, a weekly, primetime spinoff of SNL’s eternally popular comedic news segment. A standalone Weekend Update show was first attempted in the weeks leading up to the 2008 presidential election between Barack Obama and John McCain, with a handful of episodes also airing in 2009. The last time Weekend Update aired in primetime was fall 2012, prior to the election between Obama and Mitt Romney. The spinoff has remained dormant since then.

Now, NBC – via the official SNL twitter account – has officially announced a premiere date for this year’s iteration of Weekend Update in primetime. Entitled Weekend Update: Summer Edition, the spinoff will premiere on Thursday, August 10 at 9pm EST. Why do Weekend Update during SNL’s summer break? Because as the tagline says, news doesn’t take the summer off.

Weekend Update’s summer primetime run will be four weeks long, but one assumes that if it does well enough, NBC would consider bringing it back in the fall. Previous Weekend Update primetime stints have mostly taken place in the fall, so it’ll actually be interesting to see whether being on when the SNL mothership is on hiatus helps or hurts the spinoff’s viewership.

As one might expect, normal Weekend Update hosting duo Michael Che and Colin Jost are on-board to continue their duties over the summer run, while other SNL cast members are expected to make guest appearances here and there. Previous attempts at making Weekend Update a primetime staple have had mixed results, as evidenced by the fact that none of them ever seem to last very long. Perhaps the story will end differently this time out.
