NYCC 2011 Smallville The Complete Series Retrospective Smallville NYCC 11 The Complete Series Retrospective

With ten seasons under its belt, Smallville is the longest-running comic book-based show on television (and the longest-running sci-fi show in North America) — due primarily to its fan base, one of the most devout in all of pop culture.

Fortunately for those fans, Smallville: The Complete Series – a massive box set of the entire show with 192 hours of footage – will be released November 29, 2011 on DVD with a wide range of special features, including: the 1961 Superboy pilot, the 2010 final SDCC Comic-Con panel, and most importantly, a 90-minute in-depth retrospective of the entire series. At NYCC 2011, we were fortunate enough to watch the retrospective ourselves.

Basically, the retrospective (in essence, a documentary) covers every single beat of every single season of the show. Every major creator, producer, director, and actor from the series makes an appearance in some form or another – including Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, Jeph Loeb, Tom Welling, Allison Mack, John Schneider, John Glover, Annette O’Toole, and many more.

The Original Cast of Smallville Smallville NYCC 11 The Complete Series Retrospective

Check out some of the most interesting details from the retrospective below:

  • Miller and Gough initially pitched a show to WB about Lois Lane in college because they assumed they wouldn’t be able to get Superman; WB came back with Superman
  • Tom Welling’s very placid style of portraying Clark Kent developed from his complete and utter terror as an acting novice
  • John Glover – who played Lionel Luthor, Lex’s father – was originally only hired for a small part, but he did so well they expanded his role
  • John Schneider – who played Jonathon Kent, Clark’s adoptive father – based his relationship with Clark on his relationship with his son, who has Asperger’s; in fact, he likened parenting “Superman” to parenting a special needs child
  • The numerous identity switching episodes were utilized not only because they were a fun way of exploring the characters, but they were also very cheap and made room for bigger, more action-packed episodes later on
  • When Smallville was moved to a very competitive timeslot on Thursdays in season 5, everybody believed that would be the end of the show – but then it pulled better ratings than ever before
  • For the series finale, Allison Mack begged the producers not to kill Chloe – because she’d been killed so many times before
  • There are numerous behind-the-scenes clips where Michael Rosenbaum just goofs off and messes with the crew

All in all, the retrospective was really fun and informative – even for non-fans – but for dyed in the wool fans of the show, this is a must watch documentary. You may not learn anything new (that is, if you already know every single piece of Smallville trivia ever), but you’re bound to enjoy yourselves regardless.

  1. Awesome show. Does it say why Lana was so gorgeously annoying?

  2. I’ll definetly be looking to pick this up. I enjoyed all 10 seasons of the show and now it feels weird when my wife watches Supernatural without Smallville being on before it.

    • I thought I was the only one going through that. I love Supernatural, but I miss the one-two punch of Smallville and Supernatural together.

My only sadness is I won’t get to see the retrospective. I am only buying the last season (I already have all the seasons on DVD). I hope they make it available in some other way.

      • Me and my wife are having that same problem too.

      • I was thinking the same thing. I have Seasons 1-9 on DVD, so there is no way I am re-purchasing all of them just for the documentary. They should release the documentary as a separate DVD for like $15.

  3. When it says DVD, did they just mean DVD? I hope not. Waiting on Blu Ray

    • Unfortunately, there is not going to be a blu-ray release. According to WB, the first 4 seasons were recorded at a lower quality than they would allow for blu-ray transfer. Thus, they think the consumer would find the change in quality from season 1-4 to 5-10 to be too jarring. I call B.S. GIVE US THE BLU-RAYS, WB!!!

  4. Sweet so gonna get this I have all the seasons downloaded :) man I miss watching smallville

  5. Will they release just Season 10 with the extras? I already bought season 1-9. If this collection does not look any better, why should I buy 1-9 again?

    • Nope. That’s ruffled quite a few feathers actually. Personally, I don’t know why they didn’t include the retrospective on the Season 10 set as well for those who did go out and already purchase all of the individual seasons over the years. Fan or not, I have no interest in dropping $200 or more for tchotchkes and failed pilots of other shows just to get something I already own. WB should’ve had better care for the fanbase.

      • This kind of marketing ploy drives regular users to embrace other means like file sharing. I’m not promoting it or saying its right only that when choices like this are made, to squeeze the customer unfairly then complain about pirating of content its kind of hard to be but just so sympathetic with the labels/studios. In fact its the refusal to embrace digital that helped drive adoption of mp3 file sharing.

  6. Good to know. I’ll check it out.

  7. Not sure what Allison Mack is talking

Anyways, I already pre-ordered my boxset and am really looking forward to that retrospective, if only to hear Tom Welling’s insights.

  8. I would get this if I didn’t already have seasons 1-9 on DVD. Great show and I’m glad that TNT is running it now!

    • And by “running” I mean “showing re-runs”

  9. thats awful that they aren’t releasing any of the good extras on the dvd. like many on here i too have bought ever season! its a bit of a slap in the face to all the fans when they do crap like this.

  10. Smallville – the greatest tv show of the last decade

    • Indeed!

    • lebsta .. i loved smallville .. but i dont see how anyone can think it was the best show … i always thought of smallville as a bad girlfriend .. its like you love it but it never loves you back … just seems they knew the heartbreak it would cause to not see tom welling in the superman suit and they didnt care .. i mean come on for years people begged for the suit and they teased us with it …only to show us a cgi tom welling .. and no one actually ever say superman … until the very end …

      • The reason they didn’t really show the suit is because the show was NEVER about Superman, it was about Clark Kent. He was the main character, not Superman. That’s why Gough and Miller when they were running things set up the “no tights, no flights” rule and said that Clark would never put on the cape or fly during the course of the show. Obviously, when they left after season 7 things changed. But one fact still remained: The show was about Clark, the real personality of the character. Superman is just his disguise.

  11. I want this box set so badly but like everyone else I own each season already individually. The only thing that would have made me by the box would’ve been the blu-ray :(. Still love the show though and hope I can see the retrospective online or somewhere else :).

  12. buy not buy whoops! somebody saaaaave me!!

  13. I’m extremely excited about this set! I never bought any of the seasons so I’m splurging on the box set :) While the last couple of seasons left me feeling slightly peeved, the show as a whole was awesome, so it’s money well spent…

  14. nice
