smallville supernatural Are Smallville And Supernatural Ending Next Season?

With Smallville moving to Fridays and Supernatural getting a new vampire neighbor on Thursday nights, what does the future look like for both shows?

Various factors have me thinking “bleak.”

As we know, Smallville is moving to the dreaded ratings vacuum called Friday night.  As far as I’m concerned, it’s a place networks put shows they don’t care about.  We all saw how Friday night killed viewer numbers for The Sarah Connor Chronicles when it was moved there.  And TSCC had more viewers than Smallville.

Back on Thursdays, The Vampire Diaries will be the lead-in to Supernatural in the 9 o’clock hour.  This isn’t necessarily the doom of the show, but we need to remember that Eric Kripke had a 5 year story outline for the Supernatural.  Yet on the down side of things, the Winchester brothers will be up against Fringe on Thursdays at 9 – that alone makes puts Supernatural‘s fate into question.

CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff is also saying “We’ll see how the season goes,” in regards to Supernatural continuing beyond a 5th season, as if they’re not paying any heed to Kripke’s plan.

With the break-up of a great duo and the stiff competition that Fox is bringing to Thursdays, it does look like the next seasons of Smallville and Supernatural could be a little bleak in the ratings department.

Smallville:  A Quote To Remember

I had to toss this out for later reference at the end of the 2009/10 season of Smallville.

CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff is being noted as saying that if Smallville delivers more viewers than some previous Friday night shows like Everybody Hates Chris and The Game, that that would be super.

Does this mean super as in good, we’ll keep it around or super as in, it’s just super it did that, but we’re going to let it simmer and steam out from there?

Is it me, or does this all sound like lip-service in a weak attempt to retain viewers?

  1. “This show is a crime against art, science, intellect, Jesus, Buddha, puppies, and kittens.”

    ^ that made me giggle.

If you want to trash it that’s fine. Just for the love of God, don’t compare the show to Dawson’s Creek. That’s like a giant kick in the balls. The show’s not THAT bad.

  2. Smallville i mean. Dawson’s Creek is very bad

  3. Something that seems to get lost is how the show is simply entertainment and not the on going cronicals of the original Superman. Some of the names are the same, and Clark does have super powers, but after the first season it became what it is….Smallville….not Superman. I know that irritates hard core supe fans, but instead of judging it against the Superman story judge it as a completely different story and it might not seem so dissappointing

  4. It was never supposed to be about Superman. It’s about Clark’s journey to becoming him.

  5. I thought this season was one of it’s strongest and I loved how the plot was starting to line up with the superman mythos. (Clark working at the DP across from Lois etc)

As for Fridays, I think if the ratings drastically drop for the show (which im doubting) the CW will move the show back to thursday or another night. They wouldnt put their highest rated show on a Friday if they didnt have faith in it.

  6. What? Smallville was NOT the CW’s highest rated show. Not even close. Ratings were god-awful this past TV season, which is why it’s been moved to friday nights so thursday can be filled with, ya know, GOOD television. The Vampire Diaries is DEFINITELY gonna be cancelled within the first couple of eps, so hopefully they move Supernatural up to the 7 timeslot, so it doesn’t have to go against fringe.

A network like FOX or something need to pick up SPN, as it’s definitely not getting the recognition it deserves.

  7. BTW, For the people saying Smallville is better than Supernatural, check the ratings. That’s all I have to say.

  8. No! NOT SUPERNATCH!! I LOVE that show! They can’t take that one off!

Smallville I’m sick of. I stopped watching the season before last because I am tired of the CLana story ad nauseum. It was cool those few episodes when they had the Green Arrow & Aquaman. Maybe they will bring those guys in a lot more and save the show.

  9. Dear Tweeb, if you would’ve watched this season you would’ve seen that lana was barely in the pisture at all and there was some JL stuff in there. But You’re too “sick” to know what’s going on.

  10. Foopher…Uh…calm down. I didn’t realize that you were one of the show’s writers.

  11. I’m not being mean. I’m just saying

  12. I mean by what you said on the 19th, you probably would’ve liked (atleast parts of) season 8

  13. I HOPE SO AS OF SMALLVILLE I DON’T CARE FOR SUPERNATURAL.

I WANT SMALLVILLE TO CONTINUE FOR MORE SEASONS

    I LOVE THAT SHOW ALOT.

    SINCERLY

    THOMAS SHEA

  14. I loooove Supernatural! Best show on tv by far and it gets better each season. I didn’t like Vamp DiarieS at first but that show is good! There is action and new revelations every episode. It is nothing like the books. Vampire Diaries is on for sure next season and I hope Supernatural will be too! I love Sam and Dean!

  15. Smallville can’t end omg I love this show please don’t end it all smallville fans fight to keep it on
