Brian Austin Green to play Metallo in Smallville

During the break between seasons a few bits are developing in regards to the cast of the upcoming 9th season of Smallville.

The latest news I’ve seen is that Brian Austin Green is coming on board the Smallville to play the role of John Corben – or you may know him better as “Metallo.”

The surprising part for me is that it’s been reported that he stepped away from being a series regular on One Tree Hill for his two-episode appearance.

If you never caught Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, then you don’t know that Green can play a serious bad-ass character.  It shocked me when he showed up in TSCC but he pulls off the regimented, focused soldier part very well in both looks and performance.

Allison Mack Chloe Sullivan Smallville

Allison Mack Chloe Sullivan in Smallville

I came across an interview that Matt Dentler conducted with Allison Mack and in that interview, a few interesting things came of it.

First, that Tom Welling renewed his contract for 2 more years.  That makes a potential for a season 10 a bit easier to navigate for the beleaguered CW network.

The eye opener I caught was the following quote from Mack:

“I will be completed with my contract next year, and I am looking for new and exciting ways to carry out my character’s exit.”

Chloe has been more the mainstay than some other characters that should have been and I have to wonder if her leaving may mean something for the show itself?  (Just wondering for conjecture’s sake.)

According to Entertainment Weekly, the principal cast is lined up for next season.  The one “possible exception” was Sam Witwer who played Doomsday / Davis Bloom.

The Newest Showrunners Split Up

When Al Gough and Miles Millar left Smallville, the 2nd string team of showrunners stepped up and gave us a pretty decent 8th season.  Mostly (barring that rushed finale and a few other spots).  As you may recall, Darren Swimmer, Todd Slakin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson took over showrunner duties when Gough and Millar stepped out eloquently.

But after having stepped up, two of them are moving on it seems.  Swimmer and Slakvin are moving on to take over another desperate attempt at a remake called Melrose Place, leaving Souders and Peterson to run the shop.

I have to wonder when Swimmer and Slavkin left?  Did they do so before the season finale to work on Melrose?  That would explain the rushed feel to the season finale episode, that’s for sure.

Spinoff???

Nightwing of DC Comics

The former Robin as Nightwing

There is talk that despite Welling’s two year extension, that season 9 will probably more than likely be the last for Smallville.  Despite that, the CW may be looking for ways to keep one of their more popular and consistent franchises alive.

For the moment, these are just rumors floating around so don’t get your hopes up.

Maybe the two showrunners that are left heard what Screen Rant readers had to say when many of you suggested a spinoff titled “Metropolis.”

That’s right CW.  Screen Rant readers already coined a title for your new spinoff that many would like to see you do.

So what are you waiting for?  We have some pretty sharp minded readers and they’ve already done some of the heavy lifting for your CW brains!

Anyway, I presume spinoff success may have some hurdles like legal issues with character copyrights and who / what character it is they can spin off from the series and keep the interest in the new series alive.

Keep in mind as you, our readers, make suggestions for a spinoff, if there’s a movie franchise going on out there aimed at the big screens, there will probably be legal restrictions keeping those characters from doing much else.  I’m just saying… there are reasons we haven’t outright seen other characters on Smallville, and I’m sure it isn’t because they haven’t thought of them.

Ahem.  Notice my subtle suggestion for a spinoff at the top of this section?  No, not the Greysons.  God no.  Let’s just get right into it and start up a Nightwing series.  Then they can shove the ever non-existent Chloe in there.  (Non-existent meaning I don’t remember a Chloe in the comics.)

Pitch In, Gang

So let’s hear some decent viable ideas for spinoffs from you, our faithful Screen Rant readers.  Or I’d like to know from those of you who are crying out for a 10th season, how they might do that and keep it interesting for the rest of us who are wondering just how that might happen.  Because if they aren’t careful, the studio won’t see the shark fins in the water until it’s too late.

  1. I think aside from the original superman the late great Christopher Reves, this superman has been the best. I think that he has made us all believe in superman all over again. Christopher Reves passed the torch to this young man, and he has run with it for over 8 seasons now. I think that even after Smallville ends, they should make like Smallville the movie or the next superman movie should star with him.

  2. They definitely need to keep superman going after smallville is finished.

Smallville was such a diferent thinking of how superman came to be and that’s why it made it so far. I hope that’s how any upcoming movies will be. Don’t have just the guy in tights saving kitties from trees, bouncing bullets off his eyes (which was a very awesome scene), and outsmarting a bald man. They need to introduce a villian (like metallo or something) for supes to just smack around for a little bit, then bring in the main villian. Or something like that.

  3. So who’s to be a season regular this year in smallville?

  4. Bring in the Bat!

  5. Sorry no bat. but we do get the wondertwins :D (2 sarcastic thumbs up)

  6. KIK at the wondertwins comment below, I cant wait for that series *sarcasm*. Im an in an outer of smallville only because i started loosing interest after they dropped ma and pa kent along with luthor and lana and not liking the new lois that much along with the silly fact clarks not wearing glasses and hes at the daily planet. Lois cant be that stupid. How r we going to explain that one, lois and everyone getting amnesia about past smallville episodes? lol. They really need to just bring in the costume and the glasses with this show for Superdooperman, make a luthor like the comics, a nice evil technoluthor running around in suits beating the snot out of supes. Im suprised smallville is still going, I expected it cancelled.

  7. i was more than happy for continuation of smallville season 9 and i want to have a copy because up to now my service didn’t allow me to download it.and extend my greeting to alison mack(chloe sulivan)

  8. SEASON 9 KICKS ASS SO FAR!

  9. Well, up to now, Season 9 has started pretty good. Clark is having trouble being two people, we got Chloe being a lil jealous of Lois, Lois having these dreams of the future, Zod and his soldiers are running loose,Test planning something big, Symbols showing up everywhere, Metealo, and who created Metealo? Wooow, just two episodes in and there’s so many questions and some many things happening at once…. Hopefully this doesn’t wear off and the season stays like this.

  10. Zod and his people made Metallo

  11. yup it was zod and his people…..i wanna know who was in the middle the superman symbol lol

  12. Who was in the middle of the S symbol?

    Can anyone say “papa?”

    Mark those words kids!!!

  13. whose papa? lol

  14. I say no more. You’ll see.

  15. If they do continue, the Spinoff should be now just about Superman and not Clark Kent.

I feel that now that Lana is gone, we can start with Lois coming in.

Clark finally listening to Oliver and becoming the man we all know him to be, The MAN OF STEEL. Superman.

As for Lex Luthor. Michael Rausenbaum should surprise us with a chilling surprise as long as the name exists in the Smallville series I’m all ears and eyes.

  16. “surprise us with a chilling surprise”

    haha

  17. Hmm… a papa connected to the symbol for the house of El? Whoever could that be? *cough Jor-El*

Season 8 was alright but season 9 so far looks amazing. Zod and all the Kandorians conducting experiments like Metallo and unleashing zombie viruses, trying to get their powers back.

I can’t wait to see what happens between Clark and Alia. If he gives her his fathers watch at some point this season, she’s gotta be pretty special to him.

I can’t wait for Lois and Clark to finally hook up like in her visions. And i want to find out all about the dreams and the battle that’ll go down between clark and zod.

Tess and Zod might even fall in love. But, she’ll probably betray him for Clark. (Pure speculation)

Spinoff wise: Green Arrow or the justice league in general. They put a lot of work into Oliver queen, so the fans might be attached enough to let it work.

And I really want Lois to find out Clark’s secret, again, but at the same time, I don’t.

And everyone used to be really attached to Chloe, but the writing and acting is breaking my attachment to her, so it’ll be easier when she dies/leaves.

And finally, I think i read somewhere that in the comic world Dr Emil Hamilton is a villain called Ruin? With the way they wrote him in, as part of the inner circle with Chloe and Clark, I can’t wait to see what happens in that story line.

So with Clark/Lois/RBB love triangle, The Kandorians wreaking havoc, Zod/Tess, Chloe being annoying, Guess appearances of heros/villains (eg wonder twins, TOYMAN, Metallo), a living Jor-El, Dr Hamilton, Clark’s inability to fly, Olivers downward spiral (burning his green arrow outfit and in lois’ vision digging a grave) and Clark’s future relationship of sorts with Alia, I thinks it’s going to be an epicly paced season, two awesome seasons,or a letdown like the whole doomsday fight scene.

  18. I think Faora will inhabit Tess. Smallville is huge on the whole vessel concept.
Lois and Clark will definitely kiss this season.
Dr. Hamilton will have something to do with Chloe’s death.
Does Zod not remember Clark from when he came in season 6?
    Will Chloe fall for Ollie?

  19. Lois and Clark are definitely going to do more than kiss on this season. Since I first saw Dr. Hammel, he’s looked a lil mysteries to me and there must be a reason why Chloe doesn’t fully trust him, maybe she thinks he can’t be trusted.

I think that Zod is like evolving. Just like in the way that Doomsday was that when he was what’s his name (I forgot the character’s name) he didn’t remember anything that Doomsday did. I Think Zod is still evolving and when he finally gets his power he will turn from Major Zod to General Zod. The Zod that was in Lex’s body was General Zod, this was Zod in full strength I would guess. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong about the whole thing, but it kind of makes sense.

  20. am a fan of tom welling and his film called smallvill i will like you people to bring out season 9 out now

  21. me and my two sons are absolutely glued to smallville think that its great that they might be doing a series ten but could you tell us when series 9 comes to the uk we just cant wait?

  22. Jonathan Neill: No firm date, but it seems it may be airing on E4 sometime in 2010. Not sure on the accuracy of that info though.

    -Bruce

  23. I think Smallville should definetly continue as clark has so much more progression to do. I think Bruce Wayne should appear somewhere, (if only for one episode even). Clark & Lois need to actually get together and Lex cant be dead surely?? Why did they kill off Jimmy? Hes one of the characters from the original (with a smaller bowtie).

Smallville will start on E4 when its finished on the CW channel so it will be in the UK on E4 around mid January.

  24. @lee hunter
smallville wont be done on the cw til april-may 2010…..so you mean it starts when it goes on its christmas break?

  25. They killed off Jimmy because (apparently) it wasn’t the Jimmy from Superman lore. It is his younger brother. Though it would have been nicer to hint earlier that his name was Henry, to allude him being killed off, just like they did for Chloe…Lana…
Anyways, this season kicks ass and I am sure the Lois and Clark sexual tension will be amping up..not to mention her really wanting to meet her blur!!

  26. This season is gangsta… Clark is more straight up, he tends to take more risks now. Chloe has like a little more mystery to her, Lois is sexier than ever, Zod and his merry friends work real nice.

  27. Lex can’t be dead… His end has to be a lot more dramatic and exciting than a simple car bomb. But, if and when he comes back, I don’t think it will be for a long time.

  28. Nope, Zod isnt evolving, and he wouldnt remember clark from season 6 because the zod apearing now is from the orb which has the dna of zod and his merry men.. hes not evolving or anything, but the reason why they dont have power on earth is because Jor-el corrupted the orb with blue kryptonite..
the episodes getting hotter this season, I cant wait for the rest grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  29. I have enjoyed watching all seasons of Smallville and do hope the writers finally get Lois and Clark together. They have prolonged this relationship for too long and it causes fans to lose interest. I work two jobs and liked to be entertained when I watch TV. Smallville is very entertaining and I hope it continues to be so; not like Lost, which takes a rocket scientist to understand.(I still watch it.) If the writers of Smallville read this, please do not bring the character of Lana Lang back.(That storyline has lost its punch.)
