During the break between seasons a few bits are developing in regards to the cast of the upcoming 9th season of Smallville.
The latest news I’ve seen is that Brian Austin Green is coming on board the Smallville to play the role of John Corben – or you may know him better as “Metallo.”
The surprising part for me is that it’s been reported that he stepped away from being a series regular on One Tree Hill for his two-episode appearance.
If you never caught Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, then you don’t know that Green can play a serious bad-ass character. It shocked me when he showed up in TSCC but he pulls off the regimented, focused soldier part very well in both looks and performance.
Casting Bits

Allison Mack Chloe Sullivan in Smallville
I came across an interview that Matt Dentler conducted with Allison Mack and in that interview, a few interesting things came of it.
First, that Tom Welling renewed his contract for 2 more years. That makes a potential for a season 10 a bit easier to navigate for the beleaguered CW network.
The eye opener I caught was the following quote from Mack:
“I will be completed with my contract next year, and I am looking for new and exciting ways to carry out my character’s exit.”
Chloe has been more the mainstay than some other characters that should have been and I have to wonder if her leaving may mean something for the show itself? (Just wondering for conjecture’s sake.)
According to Entertainment Weekly, the principal cast is lined up for next season. The one “possible exception” was Sam Witwer who played Doomsday / Davis Bloom.
The Newest Showrunners Split Up
When Al Gough and Miles Millar left Smallville, the 2nd string team of showrunners stepped up and gave us a pretty decent 8th season. Mostly (barring that rushed finale and a few other spots). As you may recall, Darren Swimmer, Todd Slakin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson took over showrunner duties when Gough and Millar stepped out eloquently.
But after having stepped up, two of them are moving on it seems. Swimmer and Slakvin are moving on to take over another desperate attempt at a remake called Melrose Place, leaving Souders and Peterson to run the shop.
I have to wonder when Swimmer and Slavkin left? Did they do so before the season finale to work on Melrose? That would explain the rushed feel to the season finale episode, that’s for sure.
Spinoff???

The former Robin as Nightwing
There is talk that despite Welling’s two year extension, that season 9 will probably more than likely be the last for Smallville. Despite that, the CW may be looking for ways to keep one of their more popular and consistent franchises alive.
For the moment, these are just rumors floating around so don’t get your hopes up.
Maybe the two showrunners that are left heard what Screen Rant readers had to say when many of you suggested a spinoff titled “Metropolis.”
That’s right CW. Screen Rant readers already coined a title for your new spinoff that many would like to see you do.
So what are you waiting for? We have some pretty sharp minded readers and they’ve already done some of the heavy lifting for your CW brains!
Anyway, I presume spinoff success may have some hurdles like legal issues with character copyrights and who / what character it is they can spin off from the series and keep the interest in the new series alive.
Keep in mind as you, our readers, make suggestions for a spinoff, if there’s a movie franchise going on out there aimed at the big screens, there will probably be legal restrictions keeping those characters from doing much else. I’m just saying… there are reasons we haven’t outright seen other characters on Smallville, and I’m sure it isn’t because they haven’t thought of them.
Ahem. Notice my subtle suggestion for a spinoff at the top of this section? No, not the Greysons. God no. Let’s just get right into it and start up a Nightwing series. Then they can shove the ever non-existent Chloe in there. (Non-existent meaning I don’t remember a Chloe in the comics.)
Pitch In, Gang
So let’s hear some decent viable ideas for spinoffs from you, our faithful Screen Rant readers. Or I’d like to know from those of you who are crying out for a 10th season, how they might do that and keep it interesting for the rest of us who are wondering just how that might happen. Because if they aren’t careful, the studio won’t see the shark fins in the water until it’s too late.

Around the web:

Judging from the the season 9 trailer, she is back from her trip to the future in the premiere.
Anyway, i just stopped by my local wal-mart and got season 8 on DVD! There’s a neat featurette on Allison Mack directing POWER, and also a documentary on how they made Doomsday. It’s pretty good stuff.
i found this on wikipedia…..apparetly we get the superman s this season….this explains a lot of this seasons plot
Season 9
The ninth season of Smallville is set to premiere on September 25, 2009. Brian Austin Green has been confirmed to portray Metallo for at least two episodes this season,[5] but executive producer Brian Peterson hopes that he will stay on board for more episodes. Callum Blue has also been confirmed to portray Zod as a series regular. His character was first mentioned in season five, when Brainiac used Lex Luthor’s body as a physical vessel for Zod’s spirit to inhabit. In an interview, executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders explained that this version of Zod will be different from the one who appeared in prior seasons. The execs classify this incarnation as “Major Zod”, as opposed to his typical “General Zod” identifier, and reveal that throughout season nine “the venomous side of Zod rises because he experiences a few key betrayals with our beloved characters”. In an interview, Justin Hartley revealed that season nine will partially deal with Oliver having to battle his personal demons: “I think he is going to struggle with the things he has been afforded (as a result of) his powers. He has sacrificed things and done things that haunt him… It’s bad stuff. We need to get to the bottom of it.” Peterson states that season nine will see Clark taking his “Red-Blue Blur” persona into obsessive territory: “He is trying a little too hard to be a hero, and is leaving the rest of his life behind.” Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello revealed that this season will feature major developments to the Clark/Lois relationship, but also that Superman’s “iconic ‘S’” will be featured significantly throughout the season, including Clark’s chest. After an interview with Peterson, Ausiello states that the theme for season nine will be “Clark’s darkest hour”; there will be a love-triangle between Clark, Lois, and the Red-Blue Blur that will last for the season; tension will build between Chloe and Clark as the former realizes she is not satisfied just being a “sidekick”; and that the creative team is not “story-wise, approaching this season as Smallville’s last”. A scene between Clark and Jor-El has been constructed for the premiere to explain why Clark has not learned to fly.
In an interview following the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con International panel for Smallville, Souders and Peterson revealed that Clark will be training to take one-step closer to his ultimate destiny as Superman. The executive producers also stated that DC Comics character Roulette will be making an appearance on the show, as well as several other characters, and that Clark would be wearing a costume while performing his Red-Blue Blur duties. The pair explained that not only is this season’s theme about “Clark’s darkest hour”, but also about him “embracing the fact that he is an alien”. E! Online’s Natalie Abrams revealed, following the Smallville panel, that Clark’s suit will be black, with a silver Superman “S” on the front, as well a trench coat that doubles as a cape. Based on the information released at the panel, Abrams reports that Clark and Chloe’s relationship will be strained this season, Oliver Queen will “hit rock bottom” this season, the producers have a series finale prepared should this season be the last, Clark and Oliver’s friendship will become tense thanks to Oliver’s growing interest in rekindling his romantic relationship with Lois, Zod will be bringing multiple Kryptonians to Earth with him, and there is a chance Jor-El may make a physical appearance on the show. Tom Welling will be directing two episodes, Allison Mack will be directing one, and Geoff Johns will return to write an episode featuring the Justice Society of America.
BEN, you need to follow our other articles on SMALLVILLE and this might not have been a surprise to you. But thanks for the info.
ok i’ll check em out lol
I’ve been watching alot of season 8 today and i’ve come to the conclusion that jimmy’s middle name being jimmy makes absolutely no sense at all. In episode 5 when the impound lot calls Chole and his appartment he says about the vehicles of Chloe Sullivan and James Olsen. His car is even registered as James Olsen. I mean unless he was just truly against the name Henry it just doen’t add up.
And a younger child being named James with the older one’s middle name being James just seems kind of weird.
The only thing i could think of is when Jimmy tells Chloe about his dad being a crazy drunk in Detroit. If he’s living (or was living) with a foster family, then maybe it was just a coincidence that his foster brother’s name was jimmy.
They definitely need to expand on that a little more in season 9.
That also answers someone’s question (i don’t even know if it’s on this post) about how Chloe had never met his dad and were like strangers at the funeral.
i just cant wait to see season 9
I would definitly like to see Smallville keep rolling with a tenth season. The Metropolis idea is good too. I am a big Superman fan and a big fan of the show Smallville. I would hate to see it go.
I still think that it should had ended maybe 3 seasons ago, about the time when Lex had Zod’s spirit in him or something like that. But, then again, if this season starts good and it gives fans something to talk about, it might give writers a sense to extending to the 10th season. It all falls on the first 4 or 5 episodes of the 9th season. If they are good and interesting, then we will see a season 10.
I’m sure the first episodes will be good, they always are. But there are also going to be those (stiletto) episdoes to fill in stuff and make it a complete season or whatever. I liked STILETTO though so yeah.
Hey, the Stiletto episode wasn’t bad. It was funny, and it was one of Jimmy’s best episodes.
I just hope season 9 doesn’t get every supped up and then it leads up to a 5 minute clash between superman and Zod. Season 8 started good but ended pretty rough.
True, but it was a good rough (if that makes any sense). I really didn’t have a problem with any episode in season 8.
I think that they had something good there with the whole Justice League thing coming from the future. They should have added to that and maybe clark would have gone to the future to see or met other heros, etc…
Yeah, that would be a good idea, but i think they wanted to stay away from that since it would probably end up being corny and fans having a problem with it
Or they decided to hold on to it and use more for season 9 and maybe even season 10. I mean Season 8 might have been like to give us a taste of the Justice League, I have a feeling we will be seeing more from them.
Hopefully
And i do mean that. I do think it would be a cool thing to explore on the show (if done correctly)
i think it will be done….after all one of the eps this season is called “justice society of america”
Oooooh. Cool. I’m really looking forward to this season. If it is the last, it looks like they’re definitely going to go out with a BANG
lol yeah….they have both a season finale and series finale ready just incase
…i posted an entire couple paragraphs from wikipedia on the last page.
Huge fan of Smallville, I don’t mind if Season 9 is the last as long as Clark actually becomes Superman at/before the end or the whole show was a waste of time
Well I think that season 9 will really pick up momentum since season 8 was a transition piece, gradual and detailed in emotional and character progression. Season 9 will also be an emotional episode I expect but also a very action-packed one with the arrival of many more villains and allies.
we all know the show can get “actiony” (COMBAT season 6)I’m hoping they get a little more of that.
Ther season’s called Clarks Darkest hour so i don’t know if that would be good to end on with superman ya know. so maybe they will do a 10th season

Anyone got a general idea when season 9′s coming to england?
No idea, sorry
I am a HUGE fan of Smallville. I love everything about it and I will be very sad when it goes off air. In regards to a spin-off series, I think that is a horrible thought. I don;t think Smallville had the success that it did solely because of the show itself. I really think that it was because of the characters. Characters that we have grown to love. I will not be watching a spin-off of this if anything ever comes to be. My heart will always be with Smallville.
I think the series so far has been brilliant but they are restricted on what they can do now by the comics set after Smallville.
They’ve ben running along that line already with cheesey covers of “Henry” James Olso. Pfft. Ah well.
I think a great spin off (going against what I just said about the keeping to the comics) would be if they actually do an early years of the Justice League series. That could have potential ^.^
Yeah I’m not convinced a spin-off will work. But hey I’ll give it a watch if they make one!
