Brian Austin Green to play Metallo in Smallville

During the break between seasons a few bits are developing in regards to the cast of the upcoming 9th season of Smallville.

The latest news I’ve seen is that Brian Austin Green is coming on board the Smallville to play the role of John Corben – or you may know him better as “Metallo.”

The surprising part for me is that it’s been reported that he stepped away from being a series regular on One Tree Hill for his two-episode appearance.

If you never caught Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, then you don’t know that Green can play a serious bad-ass character.  It shocked me when he showed up in TSCC but he pulls off the regimented, focused soldier part very well in both looks and performance.

Allison Mack Chloe Sullivan Smallville

Allison Mack Chloe Sullivan in Smallville

I came across an interview that Matt Dentler conducted with Allison Mack and in that interview, a few interesting things came of it.

First, that Tom Welling renewed his contract for 2 more years.  That makes a potential for a season 10 a bit easier to navigate for the beleaguered CW network.

The eye opener I caught was the following quote from Mack:

“I will be completed with my contract next year, and I am looking for new and exciting ways to carry out my character’s exit.”

Chloe has been more the mainstay than some other characters that should have been and I have to wonder if her leaving may mean something for the show itself?  (Just wondering for conjecture’s sake.)

According to Entertainment Weekly, the principal cast is lined up for next season.  The one “possible exception” was Sam Witwer who played Doomsday / Davis Bloom.

The Newest Showrunners Split Up

When Al Gough and Miles Millar left Smallville, the 2nd string team of showrunners stepped up and gave us a pretty decent 8th season.  Mostly (barring that rushed finale and a few other spots).  As you may recall, Darren Swimmer, Todd Slakin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson took over showrunner duties when Gough and Millar stepped out eloquently.

But after having stepped up, two of them are moving on it seems.  Swimmer and Slakvin are moving on to take over another desperate attempt at a remake called Melrose Place, leaving Souders and Peterson to run the shop.

I have to wonder when Swimmer and Slavkin left?  Did they do so before the season finale to work on Melrose?  That would explain the rushed feel to the season finale episode, that’s for sure.

Spinoff???

There is talk that despite Welling’s two year extension, that season 9 will probably more than likely be the last for Smallville.  Despite that, the CW may be looking for ways to keep one of their more popular and consistent franchises alive.

For the moment, these are just rumors floating around so don’t get your hopes up.

Maybe the two showrunners that are left heard what Screen Rant readers had to say when many of you suggested a spinoff titled “Metropolis.”

That’s right CW.  Screen Rant readers already coined a title for your new spinoff that many would like to see you do.

So what are you waiting for?  We have some pretty sharp minded readers and they’ve already done some of the heavy lifting for your CW brains!

Anyway, I presume spinoff success may have some hurdles like legal issues with character copyrights and who / what character it is they can spin off from the series and keep the interest in the new series alive.

Keep in mind as you, our readers, make suggestions for a spinoff, if there’s a movie franchise going on out there aimed at the big screens, there will probably be legal restrictions keeping those characters from doing much else.  I’m just saying… there are reasons we haven’t outright seen other characters on Smallville, and I’m sure it isn’t because they haven’t thought of them.

Ahem.  Notice my subtle suggestion for a spinoff at the top of this section?  No, not the Greysons.  God no.  Let’s just get right into it and start up a Nightwing series.  Then they can shove the ever non-existent Chloe in there.  (Non-existent meaning I don’t remember a Chloe in the comics.)

Pitch In, Gang

So let’s hear some decent viable ideas for spinoffs from you, our faithful Screen Rant readers.  Or I’d like to know from those of you who are crying out for a 10th season, how they might do that and keep it interesting for the rest of us who are wondering just how that might happen.  Because if they aren’t careful, the studio won’t see the shark fins in the water until it’s too late.

  1. I think a Batman beyond Spinoff would be more relatable to young viewers besides i think Smallville has run it’s course.
The very-long drawn out Superman reveal is Super-old. And they need to introduce newer origin stories instead of relying on decades old characters.

  2. Batman is the worst superhero ever. It actually pains me just thinking of Batman. My girlfriend bought the Batman set for me to watch and I ended up throwing it in the bin to save space on the shelf! Everything about that idiot excuse for a superhero makes me sick. Especially his outfit. I wish someone would just kill that idiot once and for all and put an end to it! In all honestly an old granny could probably take down batman… it wouldn’t be that hard.

A Spinoff might appeal to some, but I doubt it would ever reach 9 seasons. Probably 2 maximum before people realise the main character is just bad!

Ps: I think me and Foopher should be banned from this thread. We’re far to opinionated and agressive.. Lol :D

  3. Pete Ross:

Don’t mess with the Batman, man. :P

What doesn’t appeal to you, appeals to others… or else the title would have died on the printing press many years ago.

    Peace out!

    B

  4. I try not to be “opinionated and agressive”. It just happens. lol

  5. But i do agree with Pete about the spin off. I don’t think it wuold be a great idea as i’m sure it wouldn’t reach 9 seasons. But like Bruce said what doesn’t appeal to some appeals to others.

Also with a spin off, it would just get too corny. I mean Smallville’s corny at times, but a spin off would get a little ridiculous. But then again, you never know. It could be 10x better than the original show.

  6. Lol True…

Bruce maybe you should collaborate this thread and send it to the Smallville production team.. Because the reality is we will probably make it to season 10 (hopefully), and not actually see any spin-offs at all.

I personally would like to see smallville continue to season 40 with Tom Welling playing superman as an old man, negotiating with young meteor freaks about why it’s wrong to use your powers to steal..
He’d look like Gene Simmons from kiss in blue tights running around at a snails pace reminiscing on why he wasted his younger years with Lana Lang, when he could have been learning how to fly all along!

    Haha…

  7. Pete, that last paragraph made me giggle. I’m glad you’re not one of those people who thinks “the show should just die”.

  8. No I love that show! Got all the seasons and made the effort to watch them all again leading up to the Doomsday finale – hence the disappointment.. Took ages to get through them all, but still thinking seasons 3 and 7 are probably the best. 6 was probably the poorest but was still worth watching. What do you think?

  9. Season 3 was by far the worst, just thinking about it…nyeh. To me season 4 and season 7 were the best (I liked 8 too)

  10. I agree with Melissa, my favs are definitely 4 and 7, but 5 kills me. I don’t mind 6 because I like the whole how Lana finally figures it all out. I have all of them on DVD…I started from the first season and now I am up till 5 now, still love this show.

  11. I too have all the seasons on DVD and will be going to my local Wal-Mart on the 25th to get season 8,

My favorites, in order, are: 2,1,3,5,8,6,7,4

I like 2 the best because, he actually starts getting “super”. 4 is my least favorite, not because it was a bad season, but it seemed like they rushed putting episodes together. (a perfect example is KRYPTO. There were just some editing flaws like the GMC logo on Lois’ envoy disappears, the shed wall bouces when Clark throws the guys into it, and they completely forgot about the kryptonite in the truck when clark went back in to save Shelby)

Alot of people would argue that 8 is the worst. No, not really. If anyone watched any episode other than the finale they should be impressed. I myself even liked the finale. During the season Clark really became “super”. He assumed his double identity, he’s working at the planet, They introduced new villians, and also new heroes.

I like season 4 alot, so that shows how much i like all the other seasons

  12. @foopher
i thought you said you didnt like season 4? lol i dont have smallville dvds yet but i plan to get them sometime

  13. Well wat ever happens we have 2 see him in the suit eventually and above all fly! its been to long now it makes a mockery of the superman legend 2 not have him fly after so long also wats happening with the zod aspect ? not heard any news about storylines reguarding him but in series 8 he appeared in the finally anyone know wats going on ?

  14. I’ve watched all the seasons up 2 d doosday finally bt i luv season 8 7 6 and 4 ofcourse

  15. i said 4 was my least favorite, i didn’t say i didn’t like it

  16. I don’t understand how season 4 is your least favorite. It had enough of everything and it ended with one of the coolest finales that I can remember.

  17. @foopher
ah….to me saying somethings your least favorite = disliking it lol

  18. I know but if you read the last sentence, it stated…

“…so that shows how much i like all the other seasons”

And Yes, season 4 had the best finale, IMO. It also had a wonderful premiere, BUT everything between that was kind of iffy to me. I mean i loved the Flash… oops i mean Impulse, episode, and i loved how they introduced Lois.

  19. season 6 was the worst, save a couple of episodes like “Justice” I liked season 2, season 7 was quite good, and despite what a lot of people think, season 5 was great too.

  20. season 8 did a good job following a solid storyline throughout the whole season but i hated sam writer’s acting

  21. The first 4 to 5 seasons were pretty good. They were very creative and it kept people excited. But I do believe that like every other series, when it lingers on for so long it tends to lose some of its hype.

I believe that they have extended the series too much. And the way Lex was killed seem to do his character wrong. I mean, this is how the great Lex Luther dies? A car explosion… Come on, I do hope that Season 9 is the last, and hopefully Zod vs. Superman isn’t as bad as Doomsday vs. Superman. Ohh, and Jimmy dieing was a bad move, he was a pretty good actor and gave some comedy to the episodes.

  22. Jimmy left the show. They didn’t chose to kill him ( i mean they did chose but what else was there to do)

    Lex isn’t dead

  23. my friend says that the current jimmy’s age didnt match up with the comic anyway.

  24. Yeah. That’s what they said at comic con. That they needed a younger jimmy.

I don’t know if i would’ve gone the whole, death, angle. But then again it’s not my show. If it works, it works.

  25. Oh, and just so everybody knows; i do know how to spell “choose”

  26. Yea, I get that they needed a young Jimmy and that he wanted to leave the show but I think it was wrong to kill him off and in the way that they did it. So unfair to his character, I think they should had let him go when he had the big fight with Chloe and he would have divorced her and just gone on his way. This would give his character potential for a comeback in a future show or for various cameos. But, now that they killed him off that’s it for his character.

  27. True, but the title of the episode was DOOMSDAY. And that’s exactly what it was. It wasn’t about the character Doomsday, but just in general, it was a very bad and tragic day for every character.

I hated to see him go, but i always seem to like those sort of, unexpected, tragic endings. (one the best parts of West Side Story, IMO, was the ending)

  28. I just wish they hadn’t annouced that there would be 2 deaths. That just sort of ruined it.

  29. Some interesting stuff here. It is a shame Jimmy’s character was killed but hey…

Everybody seems to have forgotten that Lois escaped with the Justice league ring while fighting Tess in the Doomsday episode. Considering the ending of the Doomsday episode I’d say that there is every possibility that Lois has actually gone back in time and has changed the future somehow.

    We shall see!
