During the break between seasons a few bits are developing in regards to the cast of the upcoming 9th season of Smallville.
The latest news I’ve seen is that Brian Austin Green is coming on board the Smallville to play the role of John Corben – or you may know him better as “Metallo.”

The surprising part for me is that it’s been reported that he stepped away from being a series regular on One Tree Hill for his two-episode appearance.
If you never caught Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, then you don’t know that Green can play a serious bad-ass character. It shocked me when he showed up in TSCC but he pulls off the regimented, focused soldier part very well in both looks and performance.
Casting Bits
~

Allison Mack Chloe Sullivan in Smallville
I came across an interview that Matt Dentler conducted with Allison Mack and in that interview, a few interesting things came of it.
First, that Tom Welling renewed his contract for 2 more years. That makes a potential for a season 10 a bit easier to navigate for the beleaguered CW network.
The eye opener I caught was the following quote from Mack:
“I will be completed with my contract next year, and I am looking for new and exciting ways to carry out my character’s exit.”
Chloe has been more the mainstay than some other characters that should have been and I have to wonder if her leaving may mean something for the show itself? (Just wondering for conjecture’s sake.)
According to Entertainment Weekly, the principal cast is lined up for next season. The one “possible exception” was Sam Witwer who played Doomsday / Davis Bloom.
The Newest Showrunners Split Up
When Al Gough and Miles Millar left Smallville, the 2nd string team of showrunners stepped up and gave us a pretty decent 8th season. Mostly (barring that rushed finale and a few other spots). As you may recall, Darren Swimmer, Todd Slakin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson took over showrunner duties when Gough and Millar stepped out eloquently.
But after having stepped up, two of them are moving on it seems. Swimmer and Slakvin are moving on to take over another desperate attempt at a remake called Melrose Place, leaving Souders and Peterson to run the shop.
I have to wonder when Swimmer and Slavkin left? Did they do so before the season finale to work on Melrose? That would explain the rushed feel to the season finale episode, that’s for sure.
Spinoff???

The former Robin as Nightwing
There is talk that despite Welling’s two year extension, that season 9 will probably more than likely be the last for Smallville. Despite that, the CW may be looking for ways to keep one of their more popular and consistent franchises alive.
For the moment, these are just rumors floating around so don’t get your hopes up.
Maybe the two showrunners that are left heard what Screen Rant readers had to say when many of you suggested a spinoff titled “Metropolis.”
That’s right CW. Screen Rant readers already coined a title for your new spinoff that many would like to see you do.
So what are you waiting for? We have some pretty sharp minded readers and they’ve already done some of the heavy lifting for your CW brains!
Anyway, I presume spinoff success may have some hurdles like legal issues with character copyrights and who / what character it is they can spin off from the series and keep the interest in the new series alive.
Keep in mind as you, our readers, make suggestions for a spinoff, if there’s a movie franchise going on out there aimed at the big screens, there will probably be legal restrictions keeping those characters from doing much else. I’m just saying… there are reasons we haven’t outright seen other characters on Smallville, and I’m sure it isn’t because they haven’t thought of them.
Ahem. Notice my subtle suggestion for a spinoff at the top of this section? No, not the Greysons. God no. Let’s just get right into it and start up a Nightwing series. Then they can shove the ever non-existent Chloe in there. (Non-existent meaning I don’t remember a Chloe in the comics.)
Pitch In, Gang
So let’s hear some decent viable ideas for spinoffs from you, our faithful Screen Rant readers. Or I’d like to know from those of you who are crying out for a 10th season, how they might do that and keep it interesting for the rest of us who are wondering just how that might happen. Because if they aren’t careful, the studio won’t see the shark fins in the water until it’s too late.

I think many lose ends should be tied up in season 9. Jonathan Clark must return to life because we see Jonathan in many Superman stories, even in TV series. So must Lex Luther. In early superman comics superman cannot fly but just can jump over the buildings so it is not necessary to introduce Clark’s flying capabilities in the Smallville season 9. I think Chloe’s character should be developed as the brain of Justice League, which is lead by Green arrow. And Chloe should be a supporter for Justice ever. But there should be a twist to make her true existence a secret to whole world. even to the comic books , by a sworn oath or something.
When Clark transforms in to Superman, there should be a distortion in Time-space continuum so that Jonathan come to life again.
There is another way to correct the disagreements between known superman and smallville stories. It is a parallel universe concept. We can say that superman we know lives in a parallel world and clark in smallville may be travelled to this world.
Herne, I don’t think it’s necessary to bring Bo, I mean Jonathan back to life. His death worked quite well in the first 2 movies, so it’s completely unnecessary to bring him back. Lex does need to come back, though. I still don’t think it was Lex who was killed in that explosion. I think it was a doppleganger hired by Lex. I have a feeling we’ll see Lex alive and well in Season 9, though in a limited run.
@foopher
smallville hasnt done that
“I think many lose ends should be tied up in season 9″
wow… you’ve cracked the code.
lol
@ben
season 7 episode 18
@foopher
ok…..this is why i hate my horrible memory lol
Haha. it’s alright. i’m just saying. lol
lol
yeah but still it sucks
What sucks?
havin a bad memory lol
Oh, lol, it’s ok. We all have our faults
I think smallville should stick with it’s original title.
And I was thinking thatlike the one comment metioned above that lex isnt dead what if it was an exsperiment from his gemini project.
Exactly
Personally I think that Smallville is a great show how it is…I recently just went through the whole serious again from start to finish…takes a while since I do have a full time job, but the development in this series is spinning almost out of control. The new writers are making it comic book style in the way things work, in my opinion. The old writers made well rounded characters for the first seven seasons. I am not saying season 8 was bad because it wasn’t, but I must admit that Michael Rosenbaum is definitely missing from this show. I had completely forgotten what an impact that actor made to the show. Unfornately, actors and actresses get over it…meaning they want to move onto films…fyi, none of these actors/actresses have accomplished this with any big films. I think CW will go 10 seasons…why? because they want to beat the record of Stargate SG-1, which they are on track to beat. I am a huge Stargate fan and that will always be my number one, but Smallville is RIGHT behind it. Politics and legal rights is what is going to determine whether this show makes it. I know they want to bring in other “superheros” but like it said in the article…royalities have to be paid and with all the CW shows, I don’t know if they can afford it. Overall, I pray that they can beat out Stargate and keep me hooked…
Smallville is one of the only remaining shows that is good quality entertainment. It has good values, is censored, and is not about the anti-hero for once. There’s too many shows about mafias, serial killers etc. and Smallville is about a true hero and his evolution. Clark had loving parents, friends he’s been close to for years which many shows can’t say for themselves.
@Melissa
But don’t you think it’s time for him to finally become what he was born to be….Superman? It has been 8 years; how long does it take for a Kryptonian to get it? I do like the show, and that’s why I keep watching, but season 9 should focus on him finally becoming Superman, ending with him flying from the Fortress, in costume, towards Metropolis. If they want to keep going, do it in a spin-off.
You know for a show that sucks in my opinion it has managed to be one of the most talked about things on this website. Supernatural is a much better well written show and nobody talks about that….unbelievable.
Yes, I do believe in a spin-off forsure. And I hope that if they have a new show it’s only on for four seasons, not drag it out too much. Have it concise and thought out way ahead of time so there aren’t too many buzzkills.
One thing I disliked about season 8 – horrible actors as guest stars, ie. Charlotte Sullivan and Serinda Swan. Yes they looked the part but they could not act all.
i think that smallville should have ended in season 8 but since it didnt i think that it should end in season nine its a great show and i dont think that it should stay until it becomes something no one wants to watch anymore and i think it will happen if it goes to a season 10. i persoanally dont want to see superman this show was called Smallville superman ’s life before he was and i think now that he has left smallville working at the daily planet it should end we have already seen superman and know whats going to happen, so i think they should quit while they are ahead.a spinoff would be the best thing.
one other thing i felt very cheated and am not the only one where clark and lana story is concerned they way it ended i strongly believe that these two characters who played this love story through out 8 seasons so beautifully deserved a better ending than that, we the fans deserved a better ending to them than that.wat these two had on screen was excerptional ans lois even though she and clark is destined has absolutely nothing on lana and clark and i think if they continue smallville and clark ends up with lois we will never forget lana and i dont think there is anything the writers can do with clark and louis to surpass what clark and lana had. i guess they did too much of a good job. watching smallville now is like an after taste of the real thing it just doesnt work for me anymore.
Yes, I think they sort of screwed up on certain fronts with the whole Smallville thing. If they thought it would go to eight seasons they should have started the show when he was like 13 or 14 years old so we could have seen more of Pete, Lana etc. and then introduce Chloe but way after establishing actual comic book characters. To me Smallville is the story of his school days and life before he even knows who Jor-El is. In the comics he only meets him the first time at the Fortress, not through the ship. Although I did enjoy their rendition in season 2.
The show should have started in grade 7 or 8 and ended their senior year when he should have really become superman. and then like had an epilogue episode that showed him in the city, Daily Planet, Lois Lane which would have had fans restlessly begging for the tale of him becoming Superman. But that’s how it’d be in my head. Anyone else?
I agree with cyrillia, I think that the way they did the whole Clark and Lana thing in the first 6 seasons will never measure up to the Lois and Clark romance.
In the season 5 episode “Reckoning” or even in the season 6 final when Lana died she should have stayed dead. End of that. Then we would have had some seasons for the Lois and Clark relationship to build up.
If you ask me I think that the writers they have now are terrible and have pointed the show completely in the wrong direction.
Yes I agree. But the Lois and Clark relationship I have liked since it’s incession, it’s really matured well while Lana and Clark’s relationship was too much of a soap-opera and I was tired watching the on-and-off all the time. The Lois and Clark relationship was going fine in season 8 until Lana came back. They should have left it like it was at the end of season 7, to me it was an appropriate ending. The season 6 ending would have worked better if Lex actually killed her because that would have let the Lex-Clark rivalry to go into full-out hatred in season 7 and the ‘fortress down’ scene would have been much more intense.
I completely disagree with Cyrilla. The Clark and Lana relationship made me sick to my stomach. Kristin Kreuk was completely useless playing the role of Lana and the screen chemistry between the two actors was non existent. If I had it my way Lana would have been written out half way through season 1 when we realised she was an acting retard. Unfortunately we had to bare the excruciating pain of listening to Kristin Kreuk’s speech getting ’sloower and slooower and slooooower’ through the seasons, thereby making the scenes longer and more excruciating/timewasting.
Louis and Clark on the other hand are a fantastic screen duo. The chemistry between the actors is great and has you almost screaming at the screen for them to get together! In fact this is one of the main reasons why most of the smallville fans I know continue to watch the show.
The only bad thing about smallville is that it leaves a whole lot of loose ends untied. I sincerely hope that the writers explain the finale of season 8 as it was a true disappointment. The doomsday battle is supposed to be epic, instead we got a rushed excuse for an episode. Hopefully we don’t see a rush into Zod becoming the main nemesis before the doomsday scenario is rounded off.
On a side note I think it would be fantastic for Smallville to end with a proper connection between ‘the early years’ and ’superman’ It is what we’ve been leading to for the past 8 years and to just ignore that this connection ever happened would be a joke. They shouldn’t be treated as 2 separate entities without a link.
Anyway, enough of the rant… Looking forward to season 9!
That wasn’t the epic Doomsday battle yet. That is still to come. They’re following the comics with that one. I like Kristin Kreuk, she is very talented but yes, Lana is supposed to be perky, but I guess they gave that characteristic to Chloe. Lot’s of who the comic book Lana was was given to Chloe’s character.
Yes Kristin Kreuk was fantastic in Eurotrip.. should have won an oscar… or at least have been nominated :S
You all talk about how stuff will “never work” on this show. Aren’t you curious to see how it DOES.
You talk like the writers don’t know what’s supposed to happen. They didn’t know their show would rock this much and go this far. It was just a clever idea that people loved.
Melissa, thank you about the Doomsday battle thing. I don’t know how many times i’ve said that.
“I sincerely hope that the writers explain the finale of season 8″
That’s what season 9 is for. Have you ever watched a show. The point of a season finale is to make people think to themselves… “WTF just happened, and what’s next????” for months and then deliver what fans have long expected in the premiere
I am looking forward to seeing Doomsday again. Clark will have a slew of good villains this coming season. Looking forward to seeing the “s”, and I have heard rumors of the suit, confirmed Lois and Clark romance arc. I have a feeling this will be the last season. But I also have a feeling it’ll realy kick ass and will finish with a 10th season.
agreed
i agree i think this season will be awesome then finish with season 10…..then maybe justice league spin-off?
This season will rock. I am sooo looking forward to buying Season 8 when it comes out. The cover is so awesome.
Wow Foopher,
You should write for this Smallville, you seem to understand how this business operates. No really, you should have written for the show for years.. that way it would have had crappy final episodes for the last 7 seasons too!
Listen Poofer, Smallville has never had a problem creating explosive final episodes in the last 7 seasons. The crap produced in season 8’s finale was a rushed embarassment and has people wondering wether the show is even worth watching anymore. But hey.. I’m sure the writers have some consolation knowing that Poofers happy with what was produced…
Anyway moving on. I’m just glad that Kristin Kreuk is out off the show now. Next time she returns she’s supposed to have Pete Ross’s baby!
Did you know that Poofer?
