During the break between seasons a few bits are developing in regards to the cast of the upcoming 9th season of Smallville.
The latest news I’ve seen is that Brian Austin Green is coming on board the Smallville to play the role of John Corben – or you may know him better as “Metallo.”

The surprising part for me is that it’s been reported that he stepped away from being a series regular on One Tree Hill for his two-episode appearance.
If you never caught Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, then you don’t know that Green can play a serious bad-ass character. It shocked me when he showed up in TSCC but he pulls off the regimented, focused soldier part very well in both looks and performance.

Allison Mack Chloe Sullivan in Smallville
I came across an interview that Matt Dentler conducted with Allison Mack and in that interview, a few interesting things came of it.
First, that Tom Welling renewed his contract for 2 more years. That makes a potential for a season 10 a bit easier to navigate for the beleaguered CW network.
The eye opener I caught was the following quote from Mack:
“I will be completed with my contract next year, and I am looking for new and exciting ways to carry out my character’s exit.”
Chloe has been more the mainstay than some other characters that should have been and I have to wonder if her leaving may mean something for the show itself? (Just wondering for conjecture’s sake.)
According to Entertainment Weekly, the principal cast is lined up for next season. The one “possible exception” was Sam Witwer who played Doomsday / Davis Bloom.
The Newest Showrunners Split Up
When Al Gough and Miles Millar left Smallville, the 2nd string team of showrunners stepped up and gave us a pretty decent 8th season. Mostly (barring that rushed finale and a few other spots). As you may recall, Darren Swimmer, Todd Slakin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson took over showrunner duties when Gough and Millar stepped out eloquently.
But after having stepped up, two of them are moving on it seems. Swimmer and Slakvin are moving on to take over another desperate attempt at a remake called Melrose Place, leaving Souders and Peterson to run the shop.
I have to wonder when Swimmer and Slavkin left? Did they do so before the season finale to work on Melrose? That would explain the rushed feel to the season finale episode, that’s for sure.
Spinoff???

The former Robin as Nightwing
There is talk that despite Welling’s two year extension, that season 9 will probably more than likely be the last for Smallville. Despite that, the CW may be looking for ways to keep one of their more popular and consistent franchises alive.
For the moment, these are just rumors floating around so don’t get your hopes up.
Maybe the two showrunners that are left heard what Screen Rant readers had to say when many of you suggested a spinoff titled “Metropolis.”
That’s right CW. Screen Rant readers already coined a title for your new spinoff that many would like to see you do.
So what are you waiting for? We have some pretty sharp minded readers and they’ve already done some of the heavy lifting for your CW brains!
Anyway, I presume spinoff success may have some hurdles like legal issues with character copyrights and who / what character it is they can spin off from the series and keep the interest in the new series alive.
Keep in mind as you, our readers, make suggestions for a spinoff, if there’s a movie franchise going on out there aimed at the big screens, there will probably be legal restrictions keeping those characters from doing much else. I’m just saying… there are reasons we haven’t outright seen other characters on Smallville, and I’m sure it isn’t because they haven’t thought of them.
Ahem. Notice my subtle suggestion for a spinoff at the top of this section? No, not the Greysons. God no. Let’s just get right into it and start up a Nightwing series. Then they can shove the ever non-existent Chloe in there. (Non-existent meaning I don’t remember a Chloe in the comics.)
Pitch In, Gang
So let’s hear some decent viable ideas for spinoffs from you, our faithful Screen Rant readers. Or I’d like to know from those of you who are crying out for a 10th season, how they might do that and keep it interesting for the rest of us who are wondering just how that might happen. Because if they aren’t careful, the studio won’t see the shark fins in the water until it’s too late.

I’m a loyal Smallville viewer. I’ve watched the show since episode one and am determined to stick with it till the end, but man I hope season nine is it. The quality of the show has really gone down. The budget cuts are showing and the writers have made some questionable (to put it mildly) choices like killing Lex Luthor, killing Jimmy Olsen, and building up a fight between Clark and Doomsday and really not delivering on that at all. If “Doomsday” was an example of what’s to come from the two remaining show runners then I think Smallville is doomed to go out in a huge ball of flame and I hope the plug is pulled at the end of the ninth season. I just hope they have a multi-episode story arc at the end that wraps everything up and completes Clark’s transition to Superman. Somehow I have a feeling the ending of this show won’t be done justice.
I too have been a fan of Smallville from very early on, but i must say there have been some major let downs. They built up the doomsday story arc nicely (and by nicely, i mean that since they already messed it up royally, going with what they had was interesting) but they gave us a major let down in the end. That fight was crap in the end. Also, Jimmy Olsen isn’t dead. Well he is, but at least they set up the younger bow tie wearing Jimmy Olsen from the movies and comics. Also, did anyone else get the feeling like they were gearing up fro this Justice League vs Legion of Villains showdown about halfway through the season? I kinda felt that thats what was being built up, but then the whole doomsday plot took over. Oh well, i hope this is the last season, and that he finally flies and/or wears the cape. I know im being greedy and will probably see only one of those happen. NightWing would be AWESOME! I would definitely watch it for the first season, or until they tok way to many liberties and screwed up the character and story arc completely.
The spark Smallville had in other seasons has died down. I don’t fully blame the writers but they don’t help matters. The problems started when they made the shows focus the endless love triangle between Clark, Lana, and Lex through seasons 3-8. After that ended horribly, the writers had nothing except the superman mythology. The next thing I know “Jimmy” becomes “Henry” so they can kill off a major character that was part of another triangle that was never needed. The writers are the only people who could fix the problems that will destroy the show, problems like what happend to Lex, Chloe, Tess, and most of all Clark! Also they need to be careful with what they do with who came out of the Orb (some say Zod, but why would he yell his name out like that?). This Metallo better live up to fans expectations, his fights with Clark in the upcoming season may be the only thing that can revive the show
I think they missed the boat with Doomsday. In the comics, Doomsday killing Superman spawned 4 or 5 other Super persons thinking they were Superman. It could have been interesting.
I agree. That would have been cool Bruce. I really thought the season finale would have Doomsday kill Clark and then he would have come back in the season nine opener. I get that that would have been too predictable, but the whole Clark Kent is dead metaphorically thing was lame. And yeah, Jimmy wasn’t the real Jimmy and I’m actually OK with that. The death scene was well played. But the rest of the episode following that scene was pretty bad. They could have at least given the little kid Jimmy a line or two. I guess they couldn’t afford to pay him for a speaking part.
Why are people still saying that things should have happened to him before he’s superman? This is pre-comics stuff.
As for the final finale of smallville; i’m sure it won’t be weak. i know that they’ll put all the pieces together and it’ll be awesome.
It’s just different perspectives on how they’re viewing the show. The beauty of opinion Foopher.
Laura Vandervoot has stated that she will return next season and that the CW wants to do a spinoff with her character. Season 8 was awful and the finale was as disappointing as last season’s finale. I think they need to bring in better writers or just cancel the series. It’s in freefall already.
Yes the fight between doomsday and Clark was a letdown, but season 8 was a solid season. Every season has some things that might not have worked, that’s with every show though. I have noticed the fans who are happy about how the show stay off the forums and the fans who have nothing good to say are all over the forums complaining about the show. This goes for every show for the most part. If a show was as bad as people make it out to be, then why stick around to watch it. People are more prone to complain than to comment about something they liked. Sorry for the rant but I’m a huge fan of the show and I don’t understand people to watch just because they watched it from the first season. Buy the dvd, it’s that simple.
Okay first of all they need to at least introduce Bruce Wayne in there. Have Clark go to Gotham or have Bruce visit metropolis idk but for sure they need to have the Green Lantern in there. They have the JLA in Smallville but wheres Green Lantern and Batman? I understand that putting in Batman may be extreme but cmon u can at least put in Bruce Wayne
Scott, I was actually just posting my opinion about a show that I like and own every season of on DVD. I still find the show entertaining even though I think there are some things that could be done to make it better. I think that the quality of the show declines with each passing season and I see nothing wrong with voicing that. I’m not trying to take anything away from fans that love the show and I appologize if my comments have done that. I feel that I should be able to voice my opinion the same as anyone else, and I appreciate the fact that not everyone will agree with me. Just like everyone has the choice to watch or not watch the show, they also have the choice to read or not read my posts.
scott, you rock.
in my opinion i liked that the clark thing with doomsday was short. i’ve stated in other posts that it was not a battle, but just clark fetching doomsday so he could put him in the hole. people are so upset that it wasn’t a big battle; i say, do you people realize how korny that would’ve been? honestly. i love smallville and know it has awesome effects, but to form a battle of the 2 most BA characters in comics book history on a TV budget would be horrible.
They want to put Bruce Wayne in, but they’re not allowed
“It’s just different perspectives on how they’re viewing the show. The beauty of opinion Foopher.”
What are you saying? haha
Different people interpret the same thing in different ways, despite how obvious something may be to one person… it can be seen from a different angle from another person.
That make sense Foopher?
I’m getting a bit disoriented here. What was the question again? Ah yes! Spin-off and keeping us interested.. Well, how about a Suicide Squad appearance in an episode- using goons from Lex’s Belle Reeve, Arkham Asylum etc-assembled by the CIA or the govt. That was a unique team- convicts turned reluctant heroes, trusting no-one, not even their team members. Would be great. Worthy of a spin-off. Heck! worthy of a movie. What say u?
I lovely to watch smallvile, but I want to know what happen to lana..I think clark and lana’s love was very sad..I really want to know about lana’s life in season 9..
Tom Welling is oon boat of for another 2 seasons? I cant believe he is THAT pathetic…he is a TERRIBLE actor in all honesty and he has been typecasted, his career is over after this and he knows that which is probably why he co-directed several episodes; so that he could get behind that camera when he is done.
This show really cannot go to a season 10…they need to just try and have a powerful 9th season with important episodes tying up all loose ends…
I dont think that they really could pull off a spinoff with any of the existing characters opn the show.
They SHOULD NOT intro bruce wayne because we dont need to destroy another great dc chracater with the cw’s garbage television….
I have been watching smallville from season 1. I have to admit that the show isnt what it used to be. But i love the characters. i think kristin kreuk and tom welling have done an excellent job acting and i hope to see them more in future seasons/movies. keep up the good work guys.
“That make sense Foopher?” yeah. it does. you just brought up the “beauty” of MY opinion. haha
tasouli, i’m sensing that you don’t like the show
Wow… Foopher, your psychic abilities are beyond renown!!
@ foopher
Used to Love it up until the end of season 5 and even mostly season 6. Season 7 just branched out into a dissapointment and now I just want the show to end so I can move on, as many of us do
you can still move on and keep watching smallville
i mean, i understand what you’re saying and i 100% know why you feel that way.
“Foopher, your psychic abilities are beyond renown!!”

i’ve been working with my master
