The black suit was AFTER his death with doomsday. We all saw how that turned out and he had not damn trench coat. The reason why that one was so different is because it was the first time Superman was seen wearing something totally different. The red/blue versions were nothing new, either. They just completely changed superman's powers and as a result they were able to make the red/blue split make sense in the story arc (which really didnt make much sense at all). Electro superman didnt work because....well, mainly it was the costume. his powers were crazy, but it was the costume that killed it.
