Season 9 of Smallville has a lot of changes coming up:
Tom Welling will be directing a few episodes of Smallville this season, the pesky (lack of) flying will be addressed, Geoff Johns will be writing an episode and we’ve all heard how Clark will be dealing with issues on trying to be only a hero, leaving the personality of Clark behind.
We’ve also got Metallo, General Zod and (shudder), the Wonder Twins showing up in season 9.
On top of that, Clark Kent will have a new look in the upcoming 9th season of Smallville. Check it out after the page break.

OK, so it’s not the red and blue skin tight suit – but it IS his first Superman-style outfit.
When I first mentioned seeing this new look at Comic-Con, did I not say he looks like Neo from The Matrix? I hope they do this well enough to pull it off. And I also hope it’s not a fleeting moment where he wears the outfit for 1 or 2 episodes and then back to the red and blue jackets and shirts.
What do you think of the new look of Super-Clark in Smallville Screen Rant readers?

Around the web:

i totally agree with what krypton say’s i couldn’t have said it any better. thank you krypton!
You are right Michael. Superman was never about technology. He was about character. That story could have been told back in the 40′s as it could be told now. To “update” Superman is just a wrong move. As much as I like Smallville, they keep throwing in reasons that make me wonder why he would ever become the Superman we all grew up with and admired as a roll model. He as a down home Country kid with Country values. I really can’t see him wearing all Black.
I use to like smallville and i still do to a point. It is too much like a soap opera anymore. He is already in his 20′s in the show and they still dont have him flying all the time. The producers are making it seem like clark is stupid. Get with the flying already!!!
If I am not mistaken, Clark is not stupid, but to scared to fly. He can stop a speeding bus in its tracks by allowing it to slam into him, but falling down scares him. Yea, I know, makes no sense to me neither.
When supes died in the comic book in 1992, and was resurrected shortly there after, he came back to earth in a Kryptonian war suit. Inside, he wore the black and silver, and it looked cool as hell. His hair was long, and he looked like he’d been rode hard and put away wet after his battle with Doomsday.
Also, whenever we saw Jor-El, he too wore the black and silver garb. The red and blue were dreamed up by Ma Kent.
I think black suits him just fine.
Good point joeslankas. I think the suit’s fine.
HE said at the end of season 8 that “Clark Kent is dead” and apparently so is the red-blue blur. The season is supposed to be “Clark’s darkest hour”. (black suit) it fits. I’m sure he’s not going to become suparman in the black suit, but for now it’s going to have to work.
“We’ve also got Metallo, General Zod and (shudder), the Wonder Twins showing up in season 9.”
I also read, in some TV guide magazine that my grandma had, that there might be a “glipse” of Gleek (their blue space monkey).
Also with that, “Speedy” (oliver’s sidekick) will make an appearance, and some other group of heros (i forget what they’re called, (i think “Halk Guy” or whoever is in it) will be involved.
but that’s just what i read
Back to the suit; i think it will also looks better at night
@GPSpector
“Clark is not stupid, but to scared to fly. He can stop a speeding bus in its tracks by allowing it to slam into him, but falling down scares him.”
ROFLMAO!
Nailed it.
Vic
@joeslankas
That’s why I think the Clark above is the Eradicator.
Vic
You guys get to watch the new season over there in the US this month while we get to watch it from January 2010 in UK.
Damn you ! lol
If he was the Eradicator, wouldn’t there be 3 more? Plus the actual Clark resurrected?
I don’t think Doomsday or Clark died. I think Clark’s just going through a rough patch.
@Foopher
Not necessarily – we’re well aware of how on Smallville they “bend” comic book continuity on a weekly basis.
Vic
I mean it might be. i have no idea. it very well might be the eradicator. that’s just not what i thought
I’m very exited about Smallville’s 9th season:)
And read that the WB is rebooting the Superman francise, from a while back, which I’m very happy to know.
And if theres gonna be a reboot, I cannot really think of anybody eles who can play the part of Superman, but Tom Welling!!!
Think about it – He has the look for the part, he has been farmiliar with the character for many years in “Smallville” and he’s a wonderful, ya know?
But seriously,IF ANYONE WHO CAN PLAY THE ROLE OF SUPERMAN,IT SHOULD BE TOM WELLING! And as a true Superman fan, Welling would do great playing the part and eventhough Brandon Routhe did ok in Superman Returns, but I want someone who can make the character GREAT AND BE TAKEN TO THE NEXT LEVEL, like what Christian Bale did in “Batman begins” and “The dark knight”. I would feel somewhat cheated and dissapointed if it never happens.
And again, if theres anyone who can pull off the Superman role in the reboot movie, IT’S GOTTA BE TOM WELLING!!
HE’D BE AWSOME AS SUPERMAN!!! HE SHOULD DO IT!!!!
Tom didn’t like the idea of being in the tights, but maybe he’d do it for a movie. Maybe he just didn’t want to on TV.
@ Foopher:
Or maybe he just said he did not want the tights because he was tired of hearing about them for 8 years and never getting to wear them. I would stop wanting something that someone told me I would get, if I had to wait 8 years and still never got them.
I’m just curious if this new costume design doesn’t have more to do with the Seagles taking ownership of the Rights to Superman. They now own all Rights to Superman’s past that was covered in the 1st 2 weeks worth of strips and hope to have all Rights by 2013. I was not to verify how much of the costume was covered in the Rights. As far as I know, the Red/Yellow “S” did not come around for many years later. the 1st few years the “S” was Red/Black but the Suit had not really changed and may be why it can’t be used now.
GPSpector, i thought Tom just didn’t want to wear tights. And that he even almost said no to the part because he thought it would superman on tv. until he read the script and saw that that wasn’t the case.
I might be wrong though.
@ Foopher,
I was under the impression that Tom Welling, actually did a Suit test fitting before the Series even started but that it was a contractual agreement with DC and WB that prevented the use of the Suit or flight.
Of course, I too could be wrong.
Superman does not like black
maybe this is why he doesn’t like black. or they’ll explain it.
remember i said maybe
If you look at it, it’s got somewhat of a navy hue to it. So he’s still sticking to “blue” lol
Personally I like the look. I Can hardly wait to see what they do. I Still do not think that was the real Clark.
Actually people – a lot of Smallville at one point became based on Superman the movie – sets, characters, plots and so on. Clark wearing these garments is a little reminiscent of Brando’s black suit on Krypton – don’t you think so? He wore a black suit, white and gray one too. Since season 9 is a go – that at least two shows have been made – that you can actually watch it for free – give it a shot! We never know what can come out of it.
Another problem with Smallville is that it’s done on a weekly basis. If you’d have had Chris Reeve do a Superman on a weekly basis – I’m sure they’d have had to spread the sauce a little. Smallville is the longest (and has more hours) than any other Superman related show – either animated, movie or tv – so there has to be something good about it for people to keep going back.
I read this week that that Season 8 was the biggest seller in dollars…
This is a spin on the costume from the return of superman storyline, and is just used to represent a “cool” and dark look to the character, as this season’s “mission” is to culminate with a the balanced Clark between human and Superman. It would appear to me that the Doomsday arc of last season didn’t end the story but just set it up. If they step closer to the comic, Doomsday will be more powerful, and arise from his captivity deep underground. To end the series and solidify Clark’s place in DC history they need to do a couple of things. 1st, with the culmination of his training at the fortress under Jor-El, the unexplainable powers of it will make people not recognize Clark unless he makes it obvious (it changes time and hypnotises people all the time, why not?). 2nd, Clark will establish himself as a great hero as the blur and eventually do the classic story telling to Lois and the Planet. This will pull out his human side and establish to the people that he is a great hero. 3rd, after all this Doomsday will return and wreak the Justice League and Justice Society, and only Clark will be able to stop him sacrificing himself in the process. Jor-El will welcome him to death as having fulfilled his destiny, but Jonathan will stop him (last cameo by gone original cast member) as having more to do and more promise as a person then just doing Jor-El’s bidding. 4th, Clark returns, Mom gives him a colorful suit that she feels represents hope, and for the sacrifice he’s made Lois says that he’s more then a blur or a costume, he’s truly a Superman.
Audie: I do like your take on how Clark progresses. I hope they follow something like your ideas.
Also, I looked at that picture of Clark in the trench coat and noticed something odd. Either, it’s the lighting or his Left side (trench coat, pants & boot) are Blue, while his Right side is Black. Am I seeing things or do others see that too?
Audie: Shoot now that you’ve leaked the end they’ll have to write an entirely new one. Way to go.
Seriously that’s a very good take. Wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t make some of the writers jealous.
