Season 9 of Smallville has a lot of changes coming up:

Tom Welling will be directing a few episodes of Smallville this season, the pesky (lack of) flying will be addressed, Geoff Johns will be writing an episode and we’ve all heard how Clark will be dealing with issues on trying to be only a hero, leaving the personality of Clark behind.

We’ve also got Metallo, General Zod and (shudder), the Wonder Twins showing up in season 9.

On top of that, Clark Kent will have a new look in the upcoming 9th season of Smallville. Check it out after the page break.

Smallville: Clark's new look for season 9 of Smallville

OK, so it’s not the red and blue skin tight suit – but it IS his first Superman-style outfit. :)

When I first mentioned seeing this new look at Comic-Con, did I not say he looks like Neo from The Matrix?  I hope they do this well enough to pull it off.  And I also hope it’s not a fleeting moment where he wears the outfit for 1 or 2 episodes and then back to the red and blue jackets and shirts.

What do you think of the new look of Super-Clark in Smallville Screen Rant readers?

  1. that is a strange look for him. So used to all these seasons of seeing him in red and blue. This is kind of weird but I do agree about him looking like Neo from the Matrix.

  2. Yep… the first time I saw it, well, I’m partial to Neo’s look, so it hit me pretty good.

  3. The original ending to Smallville was Clark taking on his Superman persona.
How are they going to end it now ?
Its not a big deal at the end anymore .
    Clark will just change costumes.
The Superman name wont even be new.
    Bad Idea.

  4. Superb idea for the costume! Plausible and much better than the reluctant hero suddenly switching to tights. This is a show that just keeps getting better. Kudos to actors and writers.

  5. I think a tip of the hat to “The Matrix” is apropos seeing that the character of Superman is honored in the Matrix movies. Of course here they can do one better by putting the “S” on his chest.

  6. Truly Amazing. Am I the only person that is getting sick and tired of this? Ok the outfit is black. The “Superman” crest should be much, much clearer. WB, what are you thinking? Has no one seen the black and white paintings by Alex Ross? End this already. Tom Welling should be Superman in FILM not TV.

  7. Ok I Am The Only One Who Is Getting Sick Of These Cheese Hero Cameos I Want Them To Put On Batman That Would Have Been So Bad Ass. Also The Costume Feels Like It Was Thrown Together Just Before He Went On Set. I Feel Like As He Was Leaving The Costume Closet Someone Realized There Was No S On His Shirt And Took White Chalk To It

  8. “What are you saying?….That I can dodge bullets?”

    “I’m saying, when you’re ready…you won’t have to”

  9. Well Bruce? did I win the “Put a caption on the photo” contest?

  10. It is a very okay costume, this like in Spidey 1 where he puts a spider on a sweat shirt and throws on a ski mask and boom spider man, Clark is just going with a much more emo approach.

  11. Wow, that trenchcoat looks retarded! What, is he cold?? LOL

That collar is so cute, the only way to make that better is if it had fur on it! :-D

  12. LOL… Ken, Ken, Ken.

And yes JessSayin: Good caption, I like it!

  13. Tom Welling directing isn’t a “change”. He’s done it twice already, Allison and Michael have also done it.

  14. This is his first prototype costume, so the point is that he doesn’t get it right the first time. We’re going to see how that black suit evolves into the iconic suit. Don’t worry, he’ll wear the suit throughout the season and not for one or two episodes because that would regress Clark. I’m happy with this change.

  15. It’s not Jeff Johns its Geoff Johns.

And I personally love the new look. Welling looks good in just about anything…

  16. Thanks Lily.

Ouch, my bad. No one has pointed that out before, even in my earlier articles, which I’ve corrected.

    Thanks for coming by.

  17. why did they just model his look after Connor Kent (Kon-El, the Superman clone developed by CADMUS.. member of TEEN TITANS, YOUNG JUSTICE etc).. blue jeans and black tee w/a red S.. wouldnt that have been simpler

  18. Superman costume prototype #2, biker dude outfit, Superman costume prototype #3, pink tutu (then we know where he gets the idea for the tights…)

  19. I don’t know, I like it. It’s supposed to look handmade, and that’s its charm. I think it would have been a little bit better if the shirt was a dark red rather than just black, but overall I think it works.

Obviously at some point he’ll realize a trenchcoat isn’t that ideal for fighting, and switch it up for the cape.

  20. That’s a great point regarding the homemade look – it always bugged me in Spider-Man how Parker came up with that techno-awesome costume on his own with no money.

    Vic

  21. @Vic

Yeah and Sam Raimi didn’t think it would be believable for him to develop web shooters. Go figure.

  22. In Metropolis, is there anyone who can silk screen a logo? In any case I think the Superboy look would have been better. Black jeans, and a black shirt with a red “s”. It would still look custom and realistic.

  23. pretty cool

  24. This should have been his look all along as the red adn blue just seems to be awkward, or rather he should have a blue coat like he has on now and have a red shirt underneath with the symbol. It just has such a mordern cool fele to it, the cape is seriously unnessary, it makes no sense, neither does the red underwear.

    Well, that’s my view.

  25. No kidding FRED.

I’ve always seen capes as a tactical disadvantage 95% of the time in sparring and like you, they never made sense to me except for the look.

It works for me on Batman, but not Supes, except for when the floating red tarp gets picked up in the wind when he’s in his majestic, cool looking stances where he floats in the air or stands on bulidings.

  26. There’s no way he’d be able to rip that chalk S off his chest and throw it at anyone to wrap them up for a few seconds.

Smallville is the worst Superman story ever. Even Superman returns puts this crap to shame.

  27. I just have to say that I love Smallville. But with Clark they truly have made a big mistake in my opinion. He should have been made into Superman along time ago. Also the whole change of his Superman outfit is alittle wrong to do. The character Superman has been around since the 40′s and 50′s respectively, and all the while wearing the red, blue, and yellow. I fell if you are going to do a show on Superman than you should try to at least get most of the main character right. I have followed the show since the begining and have always felt that they are just trying to get the younger generation to watch it. Well my theory is if you actually showed the young generation true SUPERMAN and not this 90210 stuff they probably would really like it.

  28. Ever since episode 1, where Clark is tied up like a scarecrow with the Smallville High “S” painted on his chest, I always wonder how he would ever want an “S” on his chest again.

Also, since he was known as the “Red-Blue Blur”, I could see how he could transform into the Superman suit we all know and love, but to switch to Black?? I don’t get it. Is he trying to confuse everyone into thinking there’s another Super-Hero in town?

  29. Idk about this one. It kinda looks lame to be honest. I know its his first outfit but i get the nagging feeling of “couldnt they have done better than this?”
