We’ve been reporting for some time now that Smallville was slated to run an end game in Season 8, making it their final season. Season 8 is moving along pretty well so far and as in some rare scenarios, the success of a final season can sometimes change the minds of network execs.
Face it, cash cows are hard to let go of sometimes.
Rumors or hopes have been floating around the internet that some folks would like to see the show continued. Some fans want to see a spin-off into a Green Arrow series, others want to see Batman and Wonder Woman breeze through the 9th season or various other scenarios.

Of course we’ve all heard the news on how The CW is panhandling the DC universe to the max, hoping to extend its cash cow potential with an origin show of Dick Grayson called The Graysons. So far, no one I know is too enthused about this weak premise. But it is what it is and they will either create such a compelling show that we’ll like it, or we’ll be sending them lots of nasty letters in robin’s-egg-blue colored envelopes. Heh… not that I’m suggesting anything.
In the meantime, an offshoot site of the well known KryptonSite, got themselves a note from Smallville’s executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders where they intimate the possibility of a Smallville Season 9.
Yep, you read right. A 9th season.
They said that they are very committed to creating an origins story of Dick Grayson and they are equally committed to continuing the success of Smallville – seasons 8 and 9.
Right after that statement, they toss out that they are working on a story for Clark that allows for seasons of further trials and adventures. Ah, folks, you just brought in Doomsday (the character who in the comics killed Superman). I halfheartedly expect the show to end with Doomsday. But that’s just me.
So they got me to wondering and away I went, scouring the web and getting all tangled up in searches. And what did I find?
First off, they’ll have to juggle schedules since Erica Durance (Lois Lane) has at least two projects coming up, and Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy Olsen) has some upcoming work as well. Justin Hartley has two projects done and coming out, so I can surmise the possibility of future employment for him. Otherwise, the majority of the staff is free… for now.
Here’s my own predicament: I’ve seen a post that says: “The President of the CW Network has stated that Season 8 might not be the last season for Smallville” but their reference link does not point to anything that substantiates that statement.
In an interview over on Collider.com with Brian Wayne Peterson and Kelly Souders (two of the executive producers), they said that they and the cast would love a season 9 but are prepared to write an end story arc for the last several episodes of a season, if given enough of a heads up to be able to do it.
For me, I feel like I’ve just been tossed a red herring.
Not once have I seen a statement saying that season 9 is approved, hinted at, a go, nothing. It’s as if I was talking about winning the lottery, as if it’s going to happen. I feel like it’s a hopeful statement by the creative team of Smallville and nothing more. I came across one of the many Smallville bulletin boards out there, and almost to a tee, the sentiment on a 9th season is… let me paraphrase: “Noooo!”
Heck while the creative team keeps dropping bread crumbs about another season, some wonder if the CW is even going to around for another season itself. It probably will with shows like 90210 and such keeping it afloat.
Am I off the mark on this one, or am I just being my usual dour, suspicious self? What are your thoughts on the matter?

While the actress that plays Lana is very pretty, the character has kept Clark from being his true self for years. I think it is the consensus of most ScreenRant posters that she stay away and let Clark be Superman. Also, isn’t Erica just as pretty? I think she is more voluptuous than Kirsten.
I think that smallville is a great show but if they do a season 9, I don’t know how they will put off Clark becoming superman any longer. The show has had a great run but I don’t know how they would make a ninth season.
Folks: I understand, that this coming episode on Thursday the 14th suppose to be the final clincher of Doomsday. Lets see if Clark will perform and do his thing, we got nothing to loose.Otho/5/11/09
@t courtney. well by adding more villains. obviously. i hope zod isnt the only villain in the next season. because in some interview that they had a while back on kryptonsite. it said. that they were thinking of bringing in darkseid on the show
A QUESTION TO PONDER:
Is it me, or does it look like Green Arrow / Oliver is filling the void that Batman would have played a role in?

Additionally, Chloe heading up the control center for the Justice League. Watch Tower was something that Bruce Wayne funded in the comics.
It’s like they’ve pulled in bits and pieces of Bruce Wayne / Batman with the GA / Oliver thing.

I think this is great how their is going to be a 9th season! I am so excited.
But their are a few problems with the show, such as Lana, I think it’s all great and all her coming on to the show because she does play a big role on Smallville but also I think her time on Smallville is finished and it is time to bring in clois!!! I also thik Lex not being on the show is sutpid, he should be on their fulltime as he is a major part in Supermans life. I love the whole doomsday thing for this season, even know I live in Australia and I can’t seem to watch it because it comes out on DVD months atfer it does over in America and I don’t think they show it on TV anymore, so I just watch some episodes on the internet.
When is Clark/Superman going to learn to fly? And put the tights on? I heard that Tom welling is the only person who doesn’t want that? why not? The show needs it! It is getting to the point where they have to bring that in soon.
I thik that season 9 should be about Justice League and Superman. I think they should bring more of the DC characters in such as, Batman, Wonder woman, Green Lantern, Hawkman and Red tornado.
I think having some of these characters on the show would really put up the CW rates.
I still also thnk about what I said a few months ago is a great idea. Having Smallville lead onto a show called metropolis where Clark has just forfilled his destiny and is Superman and it is about all the troubles he faces trying to be Superman and keeping his identity a secret! Don’t you think it is great idea? Well I do anyway because Smallville is suppose to be about Superman in his teens growing up! Not living virtually in metropolis, so that’s why I think it is a great idea!

I agree that Lana should not be on the show anymore….I also agree he needs to fly, but I feel that it will happen in season 9. I also heard similar reports that Tom Welling does not want to wear tights. I think eventually he is going to have to bite the bullet and wear the suite because that is going to be the only logical next step in his progress to Superman. Oliver has a green arrow suite, maybe Clarks Superman suite can be a similar material and not spandex…..we’ll see i guess.

Some thoughts
-The final scene in the season finale shows ZOD … is he Clarks next villains
-Lex luther is Dead but can we see ZOD cloning him
-Lewis was still in the future when the episode ended, will she come back with some kind of super powers
-There was a bit of rivalry between Clark and Green Arrow in the seasn finale (when clark told him he’s not one of them anymore), will we see Green Arrow go bad.

I need to remember guys that Lois could either be in the future or in the past and thus she could change the present…. although this is perhaps not as likely as Clark has now learnt a valuable lesson, that was the whole point of Doomsday: to make Clark the Superhero he will become. Yet I feel that the last scene of the last episode he has gone a little too far thus bringing in the possibility of Lois rewriting the present/future, so in fact Jimmy might not be dead…
From season 6/7 they decided that season 8 was going to be the last season due to a slump in the ratings and the loss of both Lex and Lana (due to them having other projects) in Season 8. But as they have introduced other DC characters and possible due to the network saying that this would be the last season the ratings have gone back up. As it has been said many more DC characters can be introduced.

@Graham Langridge, the only reason that Lana and Lex were written out is because they had other projects, a film and a few episodes for Michael rosenbaum (Lex) and the New Street Fighter film (and another one being filmed now) for Kristin Keuk (Lana) but obviously the Clark/Lana duo could only go soo far before Lois eventually stepping in to fill her spot.
I’,m really not sure if they would get good ratings at all if they followed on the storyline as it has been done before in the new adventures of superman and I’m sure the leading characters need to move on at some point andf advance in there careers by doing films

I’m pretty sure that the villian is going to be Zod, it’s not going to be Lex, Brainiac or DoomsDay and know one is going to know for sometime as the script has not been written yet. If you look at the symbol that was scorced in to the ground in the last scene (after an hour browsing the web) this is actuall the kryptonian symbol for ZOD

@Jigsaw: Did you pay much attention to the last episode? Yes Clark did say your not one of us anymore but as it showed the other guys worked with him anyway and then in the last scene’s Clark said that Oliver was right.
What can I say I am definitely a fan of this show. And, yes as everyone has stated 8 seasons is alot though I don’t believe it has been 8 seasons too many. Some seasons have been better than others but I think season 8 came out with a bang and too big of a bang to ignore. Quite frankly I think fans would be upset if they were left with the cliff hanger of the season finale. I would also love to see some follow up in the relationship between Lois and Clark. For awhile there she was completely off the map. I also think that they need to further establish Clark as the official Superman since that is a relatively new establishment, but that’s just me…
I have been watching Smallville since it started, it has had slow moments, and great moments. I am kinda excited that a season 9 is on the table. they need to go back to Justice Leag. or ever leg or super heros. the have all the ground work needed, and most of the back stories already in loyal fans brains. season 9 should have clark finally flying and wearing his superman uniform. If nothing a new Superman and his super friends show could and would be the new smallville. they could use the whole season 9 to slowing intro America to the aspect of super villians, and plots to distroy Earth. Even lex does not have to be out of picture, Lex always finds a way. ( what if his super villian group steels and Leag. rings and go back in past right as explosion happens and pull him out of the fire. plenty there to think about. they need to just hire us fans to write the story line. like heros take advise for everyone.

I LOVE SMALLVILLE! SMALLVILLE MOTIVATES MY COURAGE AND HOPE FOR LIFES TRIALS! I FEEL LIKE IM CLARK KENT WHEN I SEE AN EPISODE! ESPECIALLY, THE 8TH SEASON IS MY FAVORITE! I HONESTLY HAVE TO SAY THAT I LOVE HOW THE SHOW KEEPS U WAITING N HOPING FOR CLARK KENT TO DO A SUPER MOVE BUT HARDLY DOES, BUT WHEN HE DOES, ITS SUCH A GREAT FEELING. AT THE SAME TIME I DISLIKE THAT BECAUSE I TRULY FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD BE MORE SUPER ACTION HAPPENING!!! KEEP SMALLVILLE GOING INTO A SERIES CALLED SUPERMAN! it is amazing what the television could do. ever since i started waching the smallville series, i finally found a way to get me self together. i think it is great, the story did not just jump into making clark a super hero in red and blue who saves the would like the other superman stories. i think it was great.
but i still want to watch the the season 9, i spent 2 weeks watching season 1 to 8. i just want the season 9 out as soon as possible. thanks.
well I think it would be great for smallville to continue, and I dont think that the fact tha tthey brought doomsday in is a bad thing because acording to the DC comics storyline doomsday kills superman but superman resurrects and eventually uses a time travel devices to leave Doomsday stranded at the End of Time, where Doomsday meats the one force he cannot overcome: entropy. so I have no doubt that if they wanted to keep going with smallville there are plenty of ideas and events they can take from the comics.
it would be foolish to say smallville should end at the season 8. what happens to clark ans luise relationship? what happens to lex? how does lex finally get to gain control of clark? how does cloe get to find out about clark’s powers again? how does clark learn how to fly? is linoel luthor really dead? couse he is jor-els versell, what happens to the monster that took cloe? how does red-eye regains his power? how is clark’s mother’s new job? they are many things to act about like how does he look in the super man suite? you guys better get your asses up and acting before we the fans start crusifying and critizizing you. thanks
The thing with Zod at the end of end of season 8 has left the option for a 9th season open but in my opinion i think they should make a movie . It just feels like the rite time for a movie especialy after the last superman movie which was a disaster . As much as i would love a 9th and even 10th season of smallville i think its time to let go .

i think that a movie after season 9 would be great, then they could start a Justice Leag show the season after the movies comes out, that will be some never seen. you will have tons of viewer that will want to watch new show, just cause they got all the back story from movie, and i would only show very few clips from movie in show. they should have all major Justice Leag players: Green Arrow (in place of batman, Aqua man, Flash, Cyborg, Wonder woman, Super girl). thaty movie will gross more than anyone has ever seen.
An i would even wait for clark to start flying for that movie. yea when super girl comes back. we could dream.

wow…i have never seen this site before……its pretty great….i’m sitting in class and i have to say…because i’m an army brat i live in Germany…the only tv i get is called AFN (armed forces network)we dont get smallville here and i’ve only seen seasons 1-6 because my dad got them in iraq for my birthday……7-8 sound great….i want to buy them online so i can see all the stuff ya’ll are talking about…..cross your fingers!!!
You know i think they should go for a season 9. After all the show was suppose to show how clark became superman. I feel as though they didnt do that. AT ALL. he did not fly, no cape….Nothing. I am upset with the way they ended the show.

just so all of you no! there is a 9th season. its confirmed on the cw. they moved the show to friday night tho. making it a night most people party and dont watch tv. so im guess they are trying to kill the show off after a 9th season. although there is talk of a 10th season….

i think it would be awesome to see him finally flying around metropolis saving people. also it would be awesome to see fight scenes last more than 30 seconds.
