We’ve been reporting for some time now that Smallville was slated to run an end game in Season 8, making it their final season. Season 8 is moving along pretty well so far and as in some rare scenarios, the success of a final season can sometimes change the minds of network execs.
Face it, cash cows are hard to let go of sometimes.
Rumors or hopes have been floating around the internet that some folks would like to see the show continued. Some fans want to see a spin-off into a Green Arrow series, others want to see Batman and Wonder Woman breeze through the 9th season or various other scenarios.

Of course we’ve all heard the news on how The CW is panhandling the DC universe to the max, hoping to extend its cash cow potential with an origin show of Dick Grayson called The Graysons. So far, no one I know is too enthused about this weak premise. But it is what it is and they will either create such a compelling show that we’ll like it, or we’ll be sending them lots of nasty letters in robin’s-egg-blue colored envelopes. Heh… not that I’m suggesting anything.
In the meantime, an offshoot site of the well known KryptonSite, got themselves a note from Smallville’s executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders where they intimate the possibility of a Smallville Season 9.
Yep, you read right. A 9th season.
They said that they are very committed to creating an origins story of Dick Grayson and they are equally committed to continuing the success of Smallville – seasons 8 and 9.
Right after that statement, they toss out that they are working on a story for Clark that allows for seasons of further trials and adventures. Ah, folks, you just brought in Doomsday (the character who in the comics killed Superman). I halfheartedly expect the show to end with Doomsday. But that’s just me.
So they got me to wondering and away I went, scouring the web and getting all tangled up in searches. And what did I find?
First off, they’ll have to juggle schedules since Erica Durance (Lois Lane) has at least two projects coming up, and Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy Olsen) has some upcoming work as well. Justin Hartley has two projects done and coming out, so I can surmise the possibility of future employment for him. Otherwise, the majority of the staff is free… for now.
Here’s my own predicament: I’ve seen a post that says: “The President of the CW Network has stated that Season 8 might not be the last season for Smallville” but their reference link does not point to anything that substantiates that statement.
In an interview over on Collider.com with Brian Wayne Peterson and Kelly Souders (two of the executive producers), they said that they and the cast would love a season 9 but are prepared to write an end story arc for the last several episodes of a season, if given enough of a heads up to be able to do it.
For me, I feel like I’ve just been tossed a red herring.
Not once have I seen a statement saying that season 9 is approved, hinted at, a go, nothing. It’s as if I was talking about winning the lottery, as if it’s going to happen. I feel like it’s a hopeful statement by the creative team of Smallville and nothing more. I came across one of the many Smallville bulletin boards out there, and almost to a tee, the sentiment on a 9th season is… let me paraphrase: “Noooo!”
Heck while the creative team keeps dropping bread crumbs about another season, some wonder if the CW is even going to around for another season itself. It probably will with shows like 90210 and such keeping it afloat.
Am I off the mark on this one, or am I just being my usual dour, suspicious self? What are your thoughts on the matter?

I firmly believe smallville and tom welling should be around for seasons 9 & 10. CW should realize the huge fan base smallville and especially tom welling. Cw can put on its teen soap operas but if that is all CW wants to be known for, then I feel sorry forthem. Maybe another tv station would consider running this highly successful sitcom such as Friday Night Lights went to 101. Be smart CW and producers get out there and do your job and convince CW to keep smallville on the air. By the way, I certainly hope tom welling is offered one heck of a contract and also let him direct more episodes. Tom Welling is smallville. They should also encourage Tom do so more movies!!!
in the episode where clark saves that girl in the warrior angel filming in season seven, she gives him a red cape!!! coincedence??? i think not, i think at the end of which ever season clark will don the costume in the last part of the last ever episode.
still think lex needs to return it would be an awsome cliffhanger if he returns right at the end of the last episode of this season.
in my opinion even tho tom welling is great, john glover and michael rosenbaum were the best actors of the bunch.
Ok lionels story had run its course and there isnt really anything else u can do with him.
lex on the other hand could come back for few episodes for season 9 and be behind the scenes while tess is in charge, altho with lex now knowing clarks secret it is limited as to what his stories can be.
brainiac also i think will return somehow.
to johnallen i agree, ialso think there will be a smallville movie in the next two years.
yeah i was wondering if tom welling was gonna do any more movies, hes only done cheaper by the dozen 1 and 2 and the remake of the fog.
Everyone I know wants a season 9!
I think a smart spin off would be “Metropolis” Same actors/actresses, but have Clark Kent fly, discover his suit, etc……How great would that be? Once SmallVille, now Metropolis! I think that’d be awesome.
But a 9th season would be perfect! So many would be estatic!! Hope we’ll see a 9th or a spin off of some sort!
@Vic Lol I was thinking that when leaving that comment but when searching around the web I found another Piece to support it who knows if it will happen. They want to give him a suit which will be his alter ego in the start they want to take the suit from the comic and his alter ego will have its own style in doing so Clark doesn’t risk a chance of being exposed again like this seasons Episode “Identity” Jimmy snapped shot Clark saving Lois but at the speed of light all that was left was the famous Red/Blue Blur. They said they want to use that as a Jump off point to the first Alter ego
@Craig you can’t really believe stuff on the net cause I went against my own knowledge that Welling had an 8 year contract since the start of the series which is true and read a false report that he renewed early after season 7 suppose to be in the remake of “Teen Wolf” as a support cast member and maybe even Superman in the Justice League movie but I really think that is B.S. I think he would be good Superman but not likely. However season 9 of SV I think will really be up to Welling and the CWs offer he is reported media shy turned down numerous roles for personal and SV obligations and he really wants a career behind the camera directing so I think CW can’t just throw $$$$ at him but they have to consider a contract that will give him a career boost on another platform for him to come back next year as long as they end it right it makes no difference to me. Most Likely they will leave it as an open ending like The Sopranos and Last nights the Shield Series Finale tie up the loose ends but keep the story open. If I was Tom I would fish out how much the network really wants the show next year and get my agent to start looking in to get the contract boost in a favorable direction my way so for Tom I figure that would be more directing slots on the series/other C.W. and partner series/W.B. movie direction deal ect…
I say that there should be 10 seasons and no more. I think they should play around more with the justice league and lois for this season and next before rounding it off in a tenth season with a final battle with Lex, which (obviously) comes to no winner and allowing Clark to realise his full love for Lois and how he now needs to assume an alter ego to continue to save the world. The last ever image of smallville should be of clark lifting a red cape.
With the way that season 8 has evolved I don’t really see how Smallville won’t continue atleast through season 9……..I feel they will probably leave use in a cliffhanger again maybe following a Clark vs. Doomsday battle and Clark is left for dead. Then will Jor-el’s help he emerges from the fortress with new found powers (ie flying) and possibly begins to make the transition to Superman…..or something like I just wrote transpires before the end of season 8 and the last episode ends with him flying out of the fortress, which other people have also agreed with this possibility….Give me your thoughts everyone!
They are doing good in ratings why not a season 9 shut it down at 9 or maybe even a 10th season. Friends called it quits after season 10. Smallville has been a great show I thought that after Friends there wasn’t going to be anything worth watching. Then Smallville came a long. I like what they have done with the show this year. And it would be wrong in my view to bring in doomsday and only use him for 1 season. I say use him 2 maybe 3 season before you have him kill superman.
good news everyone. read this from kryptonsite. ninth season is a go
Deal Close For Tom Welling & Smallville Season 9?
Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello has posted some good news for those of us who are hoping for a ninth season of Smallville starring Tom Welling.
From this week’s Ask Ausiello column:
Question: Any news as to whether Tom Welling has signed on for another season of Smallville? — Scarlett
Ausiello: Yes, there’s news, and it’s good. Some would even call it, ahem, super. According to a well-placed Smallville insider, Welling is nearing a deal to return for a ninth season. I’m told they’re just ironing out some minor deal points, such as should the Brinks Truck pull into the actor’s driveway, or just unload on the street.
@john
Thanks for the update!
Vic
A 9th season cool, but i thought doomsday was the end of superman, doomsday appearring in the 8th season is really wack since clark isnt even in his tights yet..they should follow the story right.
scottgia you are right,i like your suggestion,
well i always go tio kryptonsite for smallville news. i read some intgerview a while back from that site. they said they want to bring in dakrseid
darkseid* interviews*
I have been a devoted Smallville fan since the beginning. I have watched every episode and even own most of the seasons on dvd. So I say this with the utmost respect:
It’s time to end it!!
I’ve had a hard time getting into the storyline since last season and they haven’t done much this season to change my mind. Although getting rid of Lana was kind of exciting and then they brought her back WHY?????
The series seems to be falling apart from the inside out. They have built up a decent storyline this season and they’ve got the chance to end the series with a bang. So do it and stop postponing the inevitible. A 9th season as someone said earlier would jsut be “trying our patience” If they couldn’t come up with enough creativity to make this season insteresting what makes them think that they will be able to do it for a ninth season.
SOLUTION: cancel Smallville and come back with Justin Hartley as the Green Arrow in his own show.
oh, and that whole “The Graysons” thing is totally lame. They can’t be serious???????
to ashley.
Im sorry but i totally disagree with what you are saying in regards how bad this season is and a 9th season would be some what of a cash cow, although i along with im guessing everyother fan of th show was somewhat annoyed with the return of lana, i thought her exit was very graceful and right on the money in season 7, at the same time she does cause drama coming back.
season 8 has been one of the best seasons so far, and there are still 7 episodes to go, with clark destined to fly in the finale, this season could yet be the best of the bunch.
there could be numerous things they could do with season9, BRING BACK LEX for one lol, that is a must, maybe not as regular cast but he needs to be in and around the action, i also think the justice league should make more apperances too, that including impulse and cyborg, as well as the others.
i also think clark and lois even though are getting closer and cloaer to becoming an item, i dont think they will end up together, they may briefly date but it wont work out, the producers have stated before that they will go in one of two directions towards the end of this season, one being clark will have to give up something special, the special either being his powers(i highly doubt it will be that) or ultimatly his relationship with lois, the other way they were gonna with is clark would completly fulfill his destiny, which means the end of the show he will become superman and save the world etc, these two arcs will be subject to whether or not tom welling signs on to season 9.
i desperatly want season 9 and i know i am not alone.
i would like to see in the remainder of this season and next is:
clark flying
lex returning(michael rosenbaum version)
more justice league episodes
brainiac comes back(james marsters version)
pete ross returns
martha kent too
perry white maybe?
Erll i for 1 would love a season 9 each season the show gets deeper 2 the superman mythology and it gets u begging for more but for me weather they run a 9th season or season 8 is the last thr last few episodes of the entire show have 2 show him flying and in tights etc otherwise every series would of been a complete waste of time in my view if they follow his destiny onli for the last episode to leave him grounded and without tights saying that tho i did hear a roumor theres gonna be a spin off series about the justice league weather its true i dont know just what i heard I hope it is tho how kool would it be to see tom welling as superman fighting crime with green arrow etc !! has any1 else heard this roumour ?
Oh noooooooooo …. I mean that in a quiet unassuming way. No tights please or cheesy flying suits. I’m not particularly fond of the Oliver Queen, Tim Burtonesque style stuff. The reason Smallville works, in my humber opinion, is because it isn’t just a 2-D cartoon with people. The Dean Cain style superman is just so old-fashioned. I like the new interpretation, which is like 24 meets 90210 meets the X-files. I hope they don’t fall in to the trap of making it corny and yukkily to comic-like. I like the high drama factor and the back stories. Please don’t ruin a winning formula – like they ever read this stuff ie the writers/producers
yea i no wat u mean no cheesy stuff deffinately with you on that score but it is about the early years of superman after all gotta have him in tights at some point with the drama etc still included i mean wat would be the point of making so many series only for us 2 be left wondering how he actually becomes superman lol
I find it odd that if you are a fan of Smallville and Tom Welling that certainly you would be out there campaigning for season 9 and 10 as well. CW has the MOST WATCHED series in Smallvuille – why would anyone want to let this “CASH COW” go!!! CW cannot do a spin-off successfully. Remember pilot Aquaman – failed. Justin Hartley is a good actor but green lanter or green arrow won’t float. Why in the world would CW or the porducers of Smallville bring Batman or superwoman for guest appearances? Smallville has a large fan base and we want it on for season 9!!
reply to johnthomas
aquaman failed because dawn ostroff doesnt that show on ehr network. remeber she aiming for only girls. why u think they took out smackdown from cw. dawn doesnt want her shows to be viewed by boys and girls. she wants her network to be girl power only.
so once supernatural and smallville are gone. the network is girl power only.
Yea i want there 2 be a season 9 and beyond like many smallville fans the question is will the producers go for it i for 1 hope so im looking forward 2 seeing how they get round the whole identity thing since he nos lois already and works at the daily plantet without glasses lets hope it continues !
I reallyt hope that smallville gets picked up for season 9, so far season 8 has being brilliant and I would love to see it continue. However I do think it is getting to the time where superboy needs to become superman.

February 25, 2009
The CW announced today the early pickups of six series, including five of the network’s signature dramas and the reality hit “America’s Next Top Model,” which will all return in Fall 2009.
“As we continue to build The CW Network as a destination for young women, these six shows have clearly contributed to strengthening our schedule and our brand identity,” said Dawn Ostroff, President, Entertainment, The CW. “By securing these signature hits for next season, we’re furthering our commitment to deliver high-quality, original programming to our viewers, advertisers and affiliates.”
Among the series receiving early pickups for next season are The CW’s Monday tandem of sophomore sensation “Gossip Girl” and “One Tree Hill,” which combined to lift The CW to become the fall’s #1 network on Monday with women 18-34. Both “Gossip Girl” and “One Tree Hill” have scored double-digit gains compared to their previous seasons. Freshman hit “90210″ has improved the network’s Tuesday night by double-digit increases in key demos. Wednesday anchor “America’s Next Top Model,” which consistently wins its time period with young women, will also be back with superstar Tyra Banks and new groups of aspiring models for cycles 13 and 14.
Also renewed were the network’s established Thursday team of “Smallville,” which will be going into its ninth season, and “Supernatural,” which after posting ratings growth this season, will enter its fifth season next year.
