Is Smallville Season 9 Vaporware?

Published 7 years ago by

tom welling smallville odyssey Is Smallville Season 9 Vaporware? We’ve been reporting for some time now that Smallville was slated to run an end game in Season 8, making it their final season. Season 8 is moving along pretty well so far and as in some rare scenarios, the success of a final season can sometimes change the minds of network execs.

Face it, cash cows are hard to let go of sometimes.

Rumors or hopes have been floating around the internet that some folks would like to see the show continued. Some fans want to see a spin-off into a Green Arrow series, others want to see Batman and Wonder Woman breeze through the 9th season or various other scenarios.

Of course we’ve all heard the news on how The CW is panhandling the DC universe to the max, hoping to extend its cash cow potential with an origin show of Dick Grayson called The Graysons.  So far, no one I know is too enthused about this weak premise. But it is what it is and they will either create such a compelling show that we’ll like it, or we’ll be sending them lots of nasty letters in robin’s-egg-blue colored envelopes. Heh… not that I’m suggesting anything.

In the meantime, an offshoot site of the well known KryptonSite, got themselves a note from Smallville’s executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders where they intimate the possibility of a Smallville Season 9.

Yep, you read right. A 9th season.

They said that they are very committed to creating an origins story of Dick Grayson and they are equally committed to continuing the success of Smallville – seasons 8 and 9.

Right after that statement, they toss out that they are working on a story for Clark that allows for seasons of further trials and adventures.  Ah, folks, you just brought in Doomsday (the character who in the comics killed Superman).  I halfheartedly expect the show to end with Doomsday.  But that’s just me.

So they got me to wondering and away I went, scouring the web and getting all tangled up in searches. And what did I find?

First off, they’ll have to juggle schedules since Erica Durance (Lois Lane) has at least two projects coming up, and Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy Olsen) has some upcoming work as well. Justin Hartley has two projects done and coming out, so I can surmise the possibility of future employment for him. Otherwise, the majority of the staff is free… for now.

Here’s my own predicament: I’ve seen a post that says: “The President of the CW Network has stated that Season 8 might not be the last season for Smallville” but their reference link does not point to anything that substantiates that statement.

In an interview over on with Brian Wayne Peterson and Kelly Souders (two of the executive producers), they said that they and the cast would love a season 9 but are prepared to write an end story arc for the last several episodes of a season, if given enough of a heads up to be able to do it.

For me, I feel like I’ve just been tossed a red herring.

Not once have I seen a statement saying that season 9 is approved, hinted at, a go, nothing.  It’s as if I was talking about winning the lottery, as if it’s going to happen.  I feel like it’s a hopeful statement by the creative team of Smallville and nothing more.  I came across one of the many Smallville bulletin boards out there, and almost to a tee, the sentiment on a 9th season is… let me paraphrase: “Noooo!”

Heck while the creative team keeps dropping bread crumbs about another season, some wonder if the CW is even going to around for another season itself. It probably will with shows like 90210 and such keeping it afloat.

Am I off the mark on this one, or am I just being my usual dour, suspicious self? What are your thoughts on the matter?

  1. You know i think they should go for a season 9. After all the show was suppose to show how clark became superman. I feel as though they didnt do that. AT ALL. he did not fly, no cape….Nothing. I am upset with the way they ended the show.

  2. just so all of you no! there is a 9th season. its confirmed on the cw. they moved the show to friday night tho. making it a night most people party and dont watch tv. so im guess they are trying to kill the show off after a 9th season. although there is talk of a 10th season….

  4. as for yuo guys whodo not know
The CW has confirmed that Smallville will indeed be moving to Fridays at 8PM for Season 9, and they have issued an official press release detailing Season 9. (Note that they do not refer to it as “the final season” anywhere).Take a look at the press release! And for those curious, here’s The CW’s Fall 2009 schedule:

Smallville Season 9: The CW’s Official Description!

The CW has issued a press release detailing the ninth season of Smallville and confirming the show’s move to Friday nights at 8PM starting this Fall.

    You can find it below:

    8:00-9:00 P.M. “SMALLVILLE”

Returning for its ninth season, last season SMALLVILLE was filled with twists and surprises, starting with the disappearance of Lex Luthor. However, someone quickly arrived to take his place – the enticing Tess Mercer.

As Tess maneuvered her way through town, she flirted with her old flame Oliver Queen, discovered Clark’s true identity and unleashed a new world of danger. As if that hurdle wasn’t enough for Clark, he also met his greatest match – Doomsday. SMALLVILLE explored the origins of Doomsday, revealing a sympathetic guy named Davis Bloome, who battled an inner demon – the Doomsday character fans have loved to hate for years. When Clark wasn’t busy battling the beast, he was knee-deep in work at the Daily Planet. Last season threw Clark and Lois Lane together – literally across the desk from each other. As Clark’s persona as the cub Planet reporter emerged, so did his feelings for Lois, the fated love of his life. The series stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, Erica Durance as Lois Lane, Justin Hartley as Oliver Queen and Cassidy Freeman as Tess Mercer. Reinterpreting the Superman mythology from its roots, SMALLVILLE was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Shanghai Noon,” “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”), based on the DC Comics characters. Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson serve as executive producers, along with James Marshall, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola. The series is produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Let’s see who copies and pastes this from KryptonSite without a link. SUPERMAN was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

  5. thank you terry! people on here can finally stop wondering if there is a 9th season.

i think the topic should be changed to 1)”WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT OUT OF THE 9TH SEASON?” 2)”WILL THERE BE A 10TH SEASON?” 3) “WILL WE FINALLY SEE CLARK BECOME SUPERMAN, WITH TIGHTS?”(maybe a smallville version, like the green arrow)

i think it would be awesome to see him finally flying around metropolis saving people. also it would be awesome to see fight scenes last more than 30 seconds.

    just a thought…

  6. Thanks for the update Cliff – AGAIN.

Thanks so much for your attention to the matter.

  7. As my opinion, I would say Clark n Chloe! Clark n Lana would be good too! Clark n Lois were destined to be together, so as combat team, I would say Clark n Chloe!

Thank GOD for a Season 9 n maybe a Season 10 of Smallville. Smallville should never end! Smallville motivates me in my daily life struggles n trials! I have to give it up for Smallville! ITS DA BOMB! I cant wait for da 9th season to commence.

  8. who do you think is a the best pair with clark, loius, cloe or lana?

  9. do you think lionel luthor is really dead. if he is who do you think is ganna be Joel’s new vessel?

  10. by the way thanks Lex Arias Novoa for your reply

  11. If we have Jor’el Supermans real father make everyone think that Clark and Superman don’t look alike, we can have Clark Kent wear his glasses for added backup! This way Superman would’nt wear a hood or a mask! The other HOT news is that Michael ( Lex ) will be back for season 9 and if all this is done Smallville would last five more years! Any comments? 12. i cant say that i no all the comics of superman but i absolutely love smallville. its the only programme that i without fail never miss. ive got every season but 8 just waiting for that to come out. i forbid them to stop making them they just never get bouring. i think they also need to bring lex back dont get me wrong season 8 was brilliant but no lax was just to wierd he only just found out about clarks powers and had only really just become the dangerouse enermy that he has always been to superman and then he leaves. and this doomsday guy. sweet. as good as it is to always see clark come out on top it was nice to see him get a challenge. just think they could of put a bit more acction in this big fight they have kept us waiting all season for. well thats what i think anyway and my main point is that i really hope they make a season 9 and many more.

  13. Well, i will be on point.season 8 of smalville is so unblievable that i can’t wait for season 9.Don’t get me wrong, all the seasons were great but season 8 is the greatest in LOVE,ACTION,SUSPNCE,ACTIVITIES(i:e fom clark) wow, it, really nice.well, season nine is taking too long.i have mised the chracters and the movie. You guys are good at not making movie look like its been prolonged and off all super herros, superman as always been the most popular. SO, DON’T EVER STOP SMALLVILLE.

And try to use regular case in your notes. IE: Not all caps. Thanks!

  16. First of all there has to be a 9th season of Smallville. Second, what do you mean Cloe has to find out about Clarks powers again, did you watch the last episode??? I think a 9th season is awesome answer all the unanswered questions and inf this will be the last go out with a blast!
Another movie would be great but not with Tom Welling and the cast from Smallville. A spin off would be HUGE but I think it should be called Metropolis and have all the same characters/actors but advanced to where it’s Clark and Lois, no more Cloe, Daily Planet with Perry White, Clark with his two idenities etc…….tell me, isn’t that one hell of an idea??????????????????????I’d love to hear opinions people! :)

  17. oh wow! im so excited for season 9 to come out i really want to see how clark brings louis back! Ahh i really want Lana back! She should be in at least some of the episodes her and clark were amazing and i know louis is in the picture now but Lana should make one more apperence! There should be more characters too, like from the justice leage! im just so excited to see the new season!

  18. please stop slateing smallville if u dont like it dont watch it, for me i think its absolutly brilliant you cant change tom welling it wouldnt be the same and bring back lex luther i will watch it if there is another 9 seasons i love it.

  19. Linkie :) enjoy
