Smallville Season 8 Cast Update

Or… Smallville Final Season Additions and Subtractions

What can I say, the entity known as Smallville keeps lumbering forward as they approach their newest and final season with their ’step-in’ second string creative team replacing the original team of creators and executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

First, we heard the news about the creative duo leaving. Then the rumors were substantiated that Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) was leaving. Laura Vandervoort (Kara) was out of the picture, and she had to find out at the upfronts with everyone else. Kristen Kreuk (Lana) was going to be in a minimal number of episodes, but then rumors said not. Not sure on that one yet.

With the slow, inevitable oozing of cast members from the lineup, I was concerned.

After all this we got some good news in that Allison Mack’s presence (Chloe) was going to increase to almost every episode for the final season and that’s nice for some character continuity. For a while I thought the show was going to be a Clark Kent monologue.

Some bit of good news is that Justin Hartley is coming back full time to play Oliver Queen / Green Arrow.

The CW have cast two more roles, their two newest evil doers - and I am going to try and keep this as civil as possible.

Cassidy Freeman is joining the story as Tess Mercer, the acting CEO of Luthorcorp in Lex’s absence. She’s been described as being as ruthless and cunning as Luthor. So basically, they’ve kept Lex and given him a sex change. The originality is stunning. If that’s all they’ve got, I hope the eye candy factor is high enough to make me want to at least not delve into a book while the show is on.

But wait, I’m just warming up. We’ve already mentioned here that they’re introducing another mainstream bad guy in the form of… Doomsday. If you remember, Doomsday ORIGINATED on the planet Krypton as a very angry, genetic creation some 200,000+ years ago. He somehow found himself on Earth, trapped underground. He eventually escaped and ended up killing Superman. Doomsday was BIG, grey beast of a creature and had lots of bone protrusions. He was not human.

Now that I’ve warmed you: The CW has cast Sam Witwer to play Doomsday, but not from the outset. He starts out playing the role of Davis Bloome - a charismatic paramedic with a deep, dark secret… GIVE ME A BREAK! Sorry, I didn’t mean to yell.

If this is the second string creative team trying to reimagine a storyline by changing the characters themselves, they are either going down a very silly road, or I am going to be so surprised, I’ll just spit up and laugh.
