With an impending battle between Clark Kent (hopefully Superman by then) and Darkseid in the cards for this final season of Smallville, the soon-to-be superhero takes a break from the Vigilante Registration Act (and any would-be villain of the week) to take a look at what might have been an alternate path in his life.
When Tess Mercer stumbles upon a mysterious Kryptonian box that was in Lionel Luthor’s possession, Clark gets thrown into an alternate world – one where it was not the Kent’s who found Clark in the field as a child, but Lionel Luthor instead.
On top of Clark’s revelation that he now has to pretend to be Clark Luthor, our hero also has to contend with the fact that he is a known murderer who is hated by the romantic coupling of Lois Lane and Oliver Queen – all while trying to figure out a way back home.
Back in Metropolis, Clark Luthor has replaced Clark Kent and all hell is sure to break loose as Clark’s friends have to deal with an evil version of their super-powered friend – one who is capable of murder and doesn’t plan on returning to his alternate world.
In these five “Luthor” clips, you’ll see Lois’ revelation that Watchtower has more power than she could have imagined; the first interaction between Clark Kent and the returning Lionel Luthor; a deadly fencing dual between Clark Kent and Lionel; Clark Luthor confronting Tess Mercer about the existence of the mystical Kryptonian box; and Lionel Luthor confronting Tess Luthor about an impending coup that she is planning.
If all of those interchangeable surnames have you perplexed, don’t worry. In this episode, the alternate world has been given a different artistic look. Hopefully, that differing aesthetics will help with some of the confusion.
While most of the episode appears to deal with these two worlds and the battle between Clark Luthor and Clark Kent, hopefully we’ll see a little twist towards the end that will tie everything together with the ongoing seasonal story-arc. If not, it’ll still be an amazing episode. John Glover’s return as Lionel Luthor will make sure of that.
Tess (Cassidy Freeman) acquires a Kryptonian box that once belonged to Lionel Luthor (John Glover). When Clark (Tom Welling) accidentally activates the box, he’s transported to a parallel universe where Lionel found Clark in the cornfields instead of the Kents. In this universe, Clark Luthor is a murderer and Lois (Erica Durance) is engaged to Oliver (Justin Hartley) and both of them hate Clark. Clark must be careful not to tip off Lionel that he’s not his son while trying to figure out how to get back to Earth where the monster Clark Luthor was transported in his place.
