[Update: Michael Rosenbaum Turns Down ‘Smallville’ Finale Return]

As Smallville enters into the last half of its tenth and final season this month, fans of the series continue to wonder what former cast members from Smallville’s decade-long run will be returning to reprise their roles and help Clark fulfill his destiny of becoming Superman.

While Lana Lang has undoubtedly played a major part in Clark’s life, it has been officially announced that Kristen Kreuk will not be returning to the series in any form. Depending on what your feelings are regarding the character of Lana Lang, this announcement will prove to be either a positive or negative element of Smallville’s final season.

Even though it can be said that Lana’s continuous involvement in the numerous seasonal story-arcs considerably convoluted the already dragging storylines, one can’t deny that Lana received one of the worst character wrap-ups in the series history. The notion of a Kryptonite infection, while incredibly intriguing, was poorly executed and served no other purpose than to quickly write Lana off of the series.

In the same breath, one could say that Lana deserves a more complete resolution, but completely acknowledge the fact that her return would almost certainly derail this season’s almost perfect execution of storytelling. Fortunately, there is one character whose return would only help the series’ current seasonal progression. That character is, of course, Lex Luthor.

Despite the intent of Smallville producers to bring Michael Rosenbaum back to the series, there hasn’t been word of any movement, one way or the other. Even though the status of Rosenbaum possibly returning is officially still the same, Tom Welling and the rest of the Smallville producers have said that they’re “cautiously optimistic” that Rosenbaum will return as the tyrant Lex Luthor.

While “cautiously optimistic” is not even close to being a confirmation, this specific wording suggests that there may be some positive movement in bringing Rosenbaum back. Although, with Rosenbaum’s SyFy series Saved by Zeroes still in development and his reoccurring role on Christian Slater’s new Fox series Breaking In, scheduling may be tricky. That being said, I’m “cautiously optimistic” that they’ll be able to make this work.

Even if scheduling conflicts and salary negotiations may be at the heart of solidifying Rosenbaum’s return, Smallville producers don’t really have any choice but to get him back by any means necessary. Throughout Smallville’s final season, one of the main storylines has involved Lex Luthor. Although they haven’t yet secured Rosenbaum’s return, the showrunners have spent a lot of time hinting at Lex Luthor’s official return.

I guess we’ll just have to remain “cautiously optimistic” for now.

  1. I was a massive fan of Smallville a few years ago, but once Kristin Kreuk and Michael Rosenbaum withdrew from the show, whether that was a directors decision or theirselves I couldn’t bring myself to continue watching a programme that ditched my favourite characters. The same thing happened with another TV show One Tree Hill.

I grew up watching Smallville, I loved the characteristics between each person and I felt the love and care between all the characters which was brilliant, even Lionel had a caring side.

If Kristin Kreuk could comeback for the season finale then I would definitely watch it, in other cases I wouldn’t. It’s not because I don’t like Smallville, it’s because the show decided to let people go, the script writing for Kristin’s ending was really poorly thought out. Bring Kristin back and I’ll be eagerly anticipating the finale.

All the criticism around Lana – Kristin when she was on the show by the way was very childish, she was treated like a right b**** by people on the forums. “Get her out”, “Lois should be with Clark”, “Lana sucks” all petty comments that were really harsh considering it was the directors fault for giving Kristin such stupid scripts to work from. They could have made her character far more interesting, and in earlier seasons I really wanted them to be a couple on Smallville rather than the Lois Lane fiasco, I don’t even like her as an actress lol.

Bring Kristin Kreuk back, give her a short but great storyline and up the viewer count by a million. A lot of haters on Kristin, but I bet you if she was to come back viewers would be flogging in, as well as to watch Lex come back.

    • I agree i stopped watching the show once Lana and Lex left the show TANKED! Everytime i see Lois with Clark they look so awkward together they have 0 Chemistry! Tom Welling should have been with Lana thats the bottom line!

  2. As much as i love & miss Lana on the show, i don’t really see her
coming back for the final, it was her or LEX, and having LEX in the
final has a much higher demand cause he becomes one of superman’s greatest villians, so there you have it.

  3. According to this article in Wikipedia (, he will indeed return to Smallville, reprising his role as Lex Luthor for the series’ finale this May!

  4. wow,you know smallville very intresting right from reason one,all because of the love between lana and clark and the jealous of be frank thats why i decided to watch this film till the end so that i will know between lana and chloe who will make it at last. But my greatest annoyance is the disappearance of if there’s a way lana will come back to this movie i know it will be the best of it because i always from the way lana and clark understands each other to judge if my girl friend is really in love with me or we have lana, chloe and …….she’s not worth clark, lana and clark’s scene is the sweetest scene in this smallville

  5. having lana disappear like that was absolutely stupid. I WAS INLOVE WITH LANA ! she is my favourite character and writing her off like that was pathetic ! wish she came back in season 10.

    • Seriously… Lana was the worst character on the show. Her non-existent looks and acting made anyone with any sense cringe. Lex on the other hand was great.
