The debate goes on and on as to whether Smallville is going beyond the upcoming 9th season. In fact there are many things that are up in the air as far as what we know about the show.
The few things we do know:
- Tom Welling, who plays Clark Kent, has signed a 2-year contract renewal with the CW network.
- Allison Mack’s contract ends next year.
- Callum Blue & Brian Austin Green are hopping on board to play a few characters.
Things have been up in the air ever since Al Gough and Miles Millar left the show to the supporting showrunners Darren Swimmer, Todd Slakin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson. They’ve proven themselves, more or less with season 8, despite the emptiness of the season finale.

But after having stepped up, Swimmer and Slakvin are moving on to take over Melrose Place, leaving Souders and Peterson to run the shop.
Where does that leave the show? My guess is that the power hitters of the foursome were asked to move on to take over the reboot gamble of Melrose. I could be wrong with that conjecture, but things are piling up to lead this editorial writer to that conclusion.
More Questions
We are still wondering the obvious. Will Clark Fly? Will Clark put on the suit? Will Smallville become Metropolis? Last December TV Guide stated that the CW was looking at a spin-off with Martian Manhunter but we haven’t heard any other word on that since then. We even have unsubstantiated rumors that there’s a Smallville movie on the horizon and things that we want to hear, like Rosenbaum might return for an episode or two.
More Conjecture From Justin Hartley

Now we can add to the mixer of hope that calling the 9th season of Smallvile the last season may be premature – Justin Hartley who plays Oliver Queen / Green Arrow has stated this in a recent interview. He further added to that by saying that the showrunners don’t know if they’re doing one or eight more seasons at this point in time.
Initially I thought he was chatting from some actual insider information, but I think all we’re seeing here is an actor being supportive of his own job.
While he was chatting, he added a little bit about his upcoming work in Smallville…
Hartley said that Oliver Queen might be going through some issues. Those issues are a few saves gone awry and Oliver might start drinking again. He also dropped the hint that he’ll be playing a younger Oliver Queen than we saw in season 8.
Is The Writing Is On The Wall?
If you recall, The CW moved Smallville to Friday nights for the 2009 / 2010 season as a lead-in to encore episodes of America’s Next Top Model. It will also be up against the likes of Law and Order on NBC, Ghost Whisperer on CBS and Supernanny on ABC in its time slot.
It’s harsh enough that they moved it to Fridays, but the competition even on the awful TV night that is Friday looks like it might just guarantee the show’s demise.
Even if the move to Friday cuts its ratings in half (like the move did to the ill-fated Sarah Connor Chronicles), The CW says that if the show outperforms their previous Friday night fare, then “that would be super.”
To me, that seems to say an awful lot about just how the network feels about the show. If they wanted it to go on, why Friday?
Here’s hoping all goes much better than it appears it might. The 9th season of Smallville starts on Friday, September 25th and ends in May of 2010.
So is the writing really on the wall? Or do you think that Smallville could make it to season 10 and beyond?

I understand that we all want to see him become superman and we can’t wait. I too would like him to don the tights, but that would mean the show is over. I don’t only like the show for superman, i like it just as a show and don’t want to see it end.
I like to view the superman aspect as; each episode is not one step closer to becoming superman, but every season is one (or two) step(s) closer. And it’s a journey that he has to go on (a lot of steps). So, to me, it makes more sense to drag it out. Maybe that’s just me.
As for the acting, yes, Justin Hartley is a good actor. Smae with pretty much everyone in the cast. They’ve all done well and keep getting better as the show progresses. Just watch a season 1 episode, and then watch a season 8 episode. There is quite a difference in acting talent form all the cast members.
Alright all you Lois and Clark fans…
“We’re hearing the big romance arc this season is Lois and Clark.”
“!!!!! It’s a date-night viewing all season long!”

About time Foopher! I just hope they don’t use Lois like they did Lana, as a damsel in distress every week.
True that
Some classic comic things that have not been brought to the show have not been mentioned. Like WHEN WILL CLARK WHERE GLASSES AS CLARK? And as for other character things:
Chloe – She always gets crap dumped on her, will this coming season show her having happiness with no strings attached.
Jimmy – Will they bring young Jimmy into the picture?
Oliver – Will he and Dinah have a romantic storyline?
Bart – Will he die as he does in the comics? (Even though I know that’s Barry not Bart, but the show changes things)
Tess – Will she take the route that Mercy did?
Lana – Will we hear of her marrying Pete Ross as she does in the comics?
Lex – Will he come back at all and be the villain we all know and love?
Lois – Will she become the Lois we know and love?
All these questions and more should be answered this next season.
@ Melissa
So far theres been two season in which we seen Clark wear glasses. i forget which seasons but there was atleast two episodes he wore glasses. One episode was from Season 7 when he went to lookin for Kara, i forget the episode. And the episode ( Whisper ) shown Clark get blinded for a short while and gain his super hearing. During that episode he wore glasses while his vision was coming back. So far they talked about Michael Rosenbaum being back for a couple of episodes. as for rest of your questions time will tell.
Duh, I know about those two episodes. I’ve seen every Smallville episode ever made. HE ONLY WORE THOSE ONCE!! One was in an alternate reality and the other was a ‘gag’ for fans. I mean he needs to wear them permanently as in all the time like the character does. In the comics he already wore them as a kid.
I agree with Melissa he only wore them once
Chrisj, don’t forget NOIR. He had glasses in that one too. The three are WHISPER, NOIR, and APOCALYPSE
As for your “questions”, that’s what season 9 is for. If you watch, you will get answers. The show’s not over yet.
Personally, i’m very anxious to see how they end up puting him in the glasses and what not.
Yes I know. I thought I’d just put the questions up to start some new discussions, less negative ones and more about what we anticipate for some storylines people haven’t discussed yet.
LOL right, Clark wearing glasses all thru the season would be somthing. Maybe we’ll even see the Red, Blue Blur make a costume to with the name too.
Well I think that Martha will still make the costume because she still has the blanket from the ship, remember? Someone posted a few posts back that the ship was destroyed, it was, but the blanket was not in it. Remember during the finale of season 4 when Jonathan and Martha are packing up to flee the meteor shower Martha rushes out of the house with a yellow blanket and she says “I can’t believe we almost forgot this”. That was that blanket.
I wonder if we’ll ever see Jor-El’s face as we do in the comics/movies?
Good point about the blanket. I forgot about the possibility of it being THE blanket.
Also, i would like to see a Green Arrow/Black canary romance. It would be an intersting change from superguy with normal girl.
I wasn’t trying to sound mean with the “we’ll find out” comment i promise
Here is something I have always wondered about .
If the clothes Clark wears when he is fighting crime are not derived from The Blanket ,
How come we dont see his clothes burnt and torn from the constant friction of his Super Speeding from one place to the other?
@ Gary
Well. From what i read from one of my Superman books, it explained how Superman has somewhat invisable shield less than a inch from his skin, maybe just a tiny pinch away. Thing is its mostly his costume that doesnt get torn up, but it has in the comics from time to time. It depends on how much force. Mostly comics change over the years. I see Your point though because The Flash had to use different material to make his costume resistent to his speed. I seen episodes on Smallville his clothes get ripped, burned, and torn after explosions etc. some episodes hsi clothes just got filthy. Thats what i read though.
One thing still disagree with was giving Lana superpowers. But we all must remember that this is a modern re-thinking of the story, not a direct adaptation. They make tons of allusions to the comics/movies etc. but they are trying to show us something new.
I hope they bring Pete back for a few episodes, he was a fun character. Some of those characters I wish they didn’t pull so early.
Lana having powers might have been a tool to keep her off the show and so they can bring her back. It made her get far away from Clark, but it also left her with superpowers so she has to come back eventually to get them taken away.
Showrunners, if you are reading this: PLEASE do not bring Lana back. Clark is in love with her- you are the ones who created this incredible love story and I thank you for it. But he cannot move on and fall in love with Lois as long as Lana is in the picture at all. Not in the “Smallville” world that you (or Millar and Gough) created. I could care less, but to satisfy these Lana haters, please find a way to take away her superpowers without bringing her back on the show.
Andy S, I don’t think they will use Lois as a “damsel in distress” very often – she usually kicks ass in most threatening situations. One of the things I like about Smallville’s Lois.
While I am giving you showrunners pointers, go ahead and bring on Superman, put him in glasses and the suit, let him fly. Have an affair with Lois Lane. Kick lots of ass. Many fans have invested all these years for the payoff of finally getting the same old superman that every other show and movie have done so far. Just end it after this season so that we can all move on. I know you will do season 9 justice.
As for me, thank you for the unique and original story of how and why Clark Kent became the most famous superhero of all time; the wonderful familiar and original characters; talented and beautiful actors (great casting); the beautiful settings; and many hours of enjoyment. It wasn’t all perfect and you could not possibly please everyone, but it has been way more good than bad. Good job.
I wonder if people from the show check stuff like this out
I believe the writers ir assisstants at the very min. look at these comments it would be stupid not to. As for the show moving it to friday scares me for the simple reason that it is where shows go to die and as a consensus we all have expressed reasons good or bad for keeping it going also I love superman always have and the simple truth is I would watch this show for ten more seasons because it is about the life of superman and we rarely get a insight into that via a show movie or whatever only in comics and I feel like we all have enjoyed the series longevity and the popularity of this show reflects this finally the cw is probably trending more towards a different audience all together and it shows by miving it to friday they must believe they can attract more viewers with up and coming shows on the coveted thursday night time slot thanks for the time we had with the show and i hope it can continue
Smallville season 10 hu? well i honestly have to say this show has died off in my book. I mean. Ask yourself really how many times can you talk about Kryptonite. So lets bring in Kara. umm HELLO!!! she isnt suppose to show up for YEARS!!! now we have Doomsday last season.. really? Come on now HE KILLED SUPERMAN!!!!. Season 9 looks to introduce Zod.They are introducing to many people from “Superman” they have run out of ideas for “Clark Kent”. Let the show die and move on. Get Tom out of Smallville and into the Costume. Christopher Reeve has already passed the torch to Tom in season 3. Lets get the ball on the roll and get Tom into a Superman Reboot Movie. Ask yourself. When the show finally does end. How are they going to wipe EVERYONES memory of Clark Kent zipping around saving people. Lois already suspects something is up.. OH YA!!! I forgot. He wasn’t suppose to meet her till he first started at the Daily Planet. Someone please give me a Superman Reboot that can FOLLOW THE CONTUNITY!!!! Smallville has become garbage by the writers.
@ Bernie
Well put!!!
@Bernie
Come on, don’t beat around the bush, tell us what you really think.
I agree, time to move on to Metropolis.
Has anyone ever read about how Tom Welling doesnt plan to wear the tights for any whole season? We’re lucky to see him in the tights for a few seconds and it wouldnt surprise me if it was far away shot of him just standing there like Christopher Reeve did just after he became Superman in the fortress of solitude from the 1st movie. BTW, i have to say alot of people are gonna need amnesia before the show is over cause throughout the seasons, how many villains know clark’s secret? Im not all for a reboot inthe superman franchise.
YOU GUYS! THIS IS NOT AN ADAPTATION, IT’S A REINVENTED, MODERN RETELLING OF THE STORY. THAT’S WHY HE MET LOIS EARLIER, THEY WROTE IN CHLOE, LANA HAD A BIGGER PART IN CLARK’S LIFE. STOP F**** COMPLANING!!!
LOL i just have to say the show is being watered down over past few seasons. They pretty covered Clark’s powers except for flying which is what people are waiting for. If they wanted to make a series of a young man running most of the time, they should make a modern Flash series w/ Wally West etc.
I just find it odd that WB has thought about Spin-Offs to this show and then canceled them, such as Aquaman and I think Green Arrow was in the works and yet, as much as fans have been asking for a Super Hero in tights all these years, they never thought to create a Spin-Off based on Supergirl. After seeing the Actress play Kara, I was hooked. if they won’t put Tom in the Suit, put Supergirl in hers and launch that series. I’d watch it and than for the fun of it, bring in the other members of the Justice League in what ever costume they want to create for them to update them.
Though, personally, I’d prefer to see Tom in the Suit, even if it’s just to see “if” he could pass as a “Superman”. If they did both shows (I’d really be happy), than the actors could visit each show, just like with “Happy Day’s” and “Lavern & Shirley”.
As for the move to Friday, maybe they are hoping to get all those that don’t go out “Clubbing” or socializing on Friday nights to watch or at least choose between the two things. Thank goodness for VCR’s, TIVO and the Internet
Bernie< after all that, don’t you think it’s going to be interesting how they set all that up? How they line everything up with the comics? I’m really anxious to see how they do it.
Clark turning into Superman isn’t going to be the big thing, putting him in the glasses andwhat not is.
I keep hearing rumors about Clark donning the iconic costume next season. If true, I hope it’s in the series finale.
