Hopefully today’s news of Michael Rosenbaum not returning to Smallville won’t spoil tonight’s episode, as two fan favorites, Lionel Luthor (John Glover) and Martha Kent (Annette O’Toole), return!

With Chloe back in Metropolis and Clark (technically) able to fly, this season’s storyline is quickly picking up speed. While certain members of the Luthor family aren’t so keen to show themselves, nothing’s going to stop Lionel from reclaiming his corporation.

Of course, the most important part of this episode are the videos that Smallville fans submitted. In an attempt to the show Clark that the world needs him, Chloe will be showing him videos from people around the world. In this case, Smallville fans from around world, well, country (the contest wasn’t open to international residents).

‘Beacon’ Episode Description

Clark (Tom Welling) is surprised to see Martha (Annette O’Toole) on the news speaking at a pro-vigilante rally. However, surprise quickly turns to horror when he and Lois (Erica Durance) watch as Martha is injured in an attack on national television. Meanwhile, Lionel (John Glover) reveals himself to the world and reclaims LuthorCorp from Tess (Cassidy Freeman) and Oliver (Justin Hartley). Lois and Chloe (Allison Mack) decide to cheer Clark up by showing him videos from thousands of vigilante supporters professing their support for The Blur. Videos were created and submitted by actual “Smallville” fans.

  1. He’s a super Lex!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

the episode was great and Clark’s finally going to wear glasses!!! 😀

  2. lex the man of steel how nice

    • How did he cut his hair a couple episodes ago if he’s Superlex? Hmmm…. I guess the same way Clark cuts his?

      • Are you guys kidding me this is actually the “Conner aka Superboy ” except instead of him looing like Clark, like in the comics he looks like Lex. Intresting twist of the comic mythos.
i thought this was a great episode and one of the best so far of the season, it actually shows a reason for clarks reluctance to where the suit.

        • Yeah I made that connection as well, they must have used Clark’s DNA to create the Lex clone in a similar way to how they created Connor Kent in the comics.

  3. … also, I thought they were making Martha be “assulted” instead of shot… which was the supposed reason for the delay…?

  4. The only problem with the awesome John Glover being on the show is that it highlights how weak everyone else is. He’s really incredible on the show and overpowers EVERYONE with which he shares a scene.

    • Agreed John Glover was always the best and provided the most interesting character in Lionel Luthor.

    • For once, I have to agree with you Vic.

But not just John Glover, but with Annette O’Toole, it really showed how weak the show has been since the best actors left the show. Without Schneider, O’Toole, Glover, and Rosenbaum, the real heart of the show has kind of been on life support with short little bursts of life with Callum Blue and Sam Whitwer. I think they made the wrong decision years ago killing off Lionel Luthor. Even when Michael left, John Glover could have stayed with the series and it would have been interesting to see how he intereacted with Zod and Doomsday. That would have made Smallvile a bigger treasure in the long run.

Last night’s episode was the best of the season and show some real promise now that Rosenbaum will be back.

      • I believe it was Rosenbaum’s decision to leave the show, not the producers’.

    • Vic,

I agree with the Glover thing. He’s just superb. And as usual they just couldn’t resist taking their weekly political shot. Lois: “Then you have no right to call yourself fair and balanced.” Hmmm what news outlet uses that slogan. Oh, I remember, Fox News. At least it was a little more subtle as she was allegedly referring to “your paper”. Of course Murdoch owns a couple papers Wall Street Journal, etc. Whew. So frustrating.

    • I also agree. It is great to have Glover back on the show. He really is an amazing actor.
On a side note. I am an audio book fan and I have just finished listening to one that is called Red Harvest. It is a Star Wars Zombie book and it was read by John Glover. It reminded me of a really really sick Lex Luthor bed time story. :)

    • Are you $#!+ing me? Cause you better not be!

      • YES! Rosenbaum officially announced he will be back!
I say this is cause for CELEBRATION!!! {D

        • I couldn’t agree more even if I agreed more!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! And I mean that in a good way!

I’m gonna break something out of excitement pretty soon!

    • I could not be more excited about this!

    • How verified is this?? I dont want to get happy for no reason lol

  5. i loved this episode but again with the political jabs?

i got annoyed when Lionel started saying that the common people are stupid savages. ><

    • The closer the show gets to the comic books, the more left it has to turn, because the comic books are written by raging lefties. It is only remarkable because in the past, Smallville has had some pretty righty themes. I can’t remember the last time a TV show had a positive depiction of gun ownership. In modern TV land, villainous thugs have guns, and cops have guns, but ordinary citizens never have guns in their home. Smallville’s Superman grows up in a home with a shotgun hanging on the wall behind the kitchen table. It was portrayed as only natural that salt-of-the-earth Jonathan Kent was a gun owner. Young Clark even has a US flag pinned to the wall in his loft. The earlier years of Smallville went out of their way to make a patriotic connection with the Kents. I swear almost every episode had them paired up with the flag in a scene.

This year’s change in tone feels like a dramatic break with the past, but I don’t think it is because the new showrunners have an agenda. I think they are just lifting a Darkseid storyline from the comics, but that storyline happens to have a lefty spin on it.

    • I agree with the politcal jabs thing, but Lionel’s speech didn’t bother me. Commentators as divserse as Lenin to H.L. Menchen to Hitler have said the same thing. Disdain about the common man crosses political parties. There’s meglomaniacs and elites from both sides of the spectrum

      • Yeah, that one comment didn’t bother me – there were a couple of other items, but I’ll keep my opinion to myself. 8)

  6. What an episode!!! That was fantastic!!! John Glover just knocked that out of the frickin park! Bringing him back was bloody genius!
That should have been the mid season opener, because it was epic!

  7. Its gonna be an epic finale now that Rosenbaum is gonna be in it.

    • Here Here !!!!

    • Helll yhhh its gonna be epicc

  8. Glover looks like he is having fun.

  9. Vic ,
Its a good idea keeping our opinions to ourselves ,
    Because after all,
we want to be “Fair And Balanced”.

  10. In the Sixth Season Finale ,
Lionel Calls Martha to congratulate her.
The Other Lionel Read the originals diaries.
It was just the way tat he said”Senator Martha Kent”.
Like he was trying to get a rise out of her.
And the way she hesitated when he said that .
I also liked how Lionel confroted her anout her feeling for Lionel and brought Jonathan into the mix .
That and Marthas Speech to Clark were my favorite parts of the episode.

  11. Sorry? Why was Lois comment about being “fair and balanced” an issue for anyone?

    • some people took it as a fox news jab

    • Its just their weekly shot from the left–for no reason. In the great continuum of these comments this one is pretty innouccous…. but its something every week… last week it was the Tea Party, and war hawks and raging righties… In Isis it was razor wire keeping out people that just want what our grandparents wanted and oil wells… its just annoying… and completely unnecessary

  12. so wheres daekseid?

    • Next week is looking like it’s focused on Desaad, so I think that’s where Darkseid is

  13. Darkseid is coming.
But he really isnt the focus of the season, its about Clark becoming Superman.

  14. darkseid is still working behind the scenes cause thats how he does his minions do the dirty work and he rarely gets his hands dirty. but when he does it is wholesale havoc. this episode was a real hit to darkseid because the hope in people won out and the vra has been repealed. thats why next weeks episode is about desaad and some grizzly murders. its darkseid fighting back like he does. but i am ever hopeful for an impressive clark darkseid fight because its over due for an epic critical battle. and if doomsday happens all over i will so dissappointed but i still enjoy the show. zod was not terrible like the one before, it was good human combat, but this is god versus god.

  15. i loved the ep but did anyone else feel like shooting martha was in bad taste with what happened to the congresswoman just a few weeks ago?

    • These scripts and stories were worked out months ago, I imagine they toned it down a bit, the entire shooting happened off camera, you don’t even see it.

      • yeah…true

i always forget much planning it takes to make one episode

        • Even with all the pre-planning, I still think they toned it down due to that event. You didn’t even see the shots fired or any real harm done to her in the hospital, all done in good taste in my opinion.

  16. I know Michael is coming back for the Finale (and I honestly couldn’t be happier about that), but am I the only one that thought the kid that played Lex in this episode was really good? And he sure looked like a young Michael Rosenbaum too.

    • The kid played young Lex in the past before.

    • I actually feel a little sorry for the kid… Rosenbaum made that character his own… so I can’t help looking for any other Lex to play the part like Rosenbaum… I keep looking for the same sarcastic deadpan delivery… the same mannerisms… I know its probably not fair, but anyone else playing Lex really has to pay homage to the MR version in Smallville… I thought the guy who played the older Lex in the season premiere actually was trying to channel the MR version, and I thought he did a pretty good job… but as the audience we’re supposed to be led to believe that Lucas Grabeel (sp) is going to turn into Michael Rosenbaum through accelerated aging in a couple of weeks… so they should (I think) try to get the kid to act a little more like Rosenbaum’s version… just my opinion….

  17. As if the finale couldn’t get any better Darkseid, the suit, flying, Superman, Lex Luthor, two hour special and to top it all off Greg Beeman!!! is going to direct the Finale. He has directed great epis Reckoning, Salvation, Crusade.

  18. here’s hoping that when superman flies, they get it right…a good flying scene is hard to come by, it seems. the weird blue sonic ripples behind him in the virtual world didn’t work for me at all…they weren’t even tracked correctly with the camera angles.

    • That’s Smallville for ya 😉 haha

They’ve had some really good special effects throughout the series, but that wasn’t one if those times

      • The best flying on the show, and the best I’ve seen in any movie(!), was Kal’s flying to catch Lex’s plane in season 4 or 5. What really sold that effect was brilliant direction and placement of the virtual camera. After the liftoff, the camera is in the air. Kal is a dot in the distance. Kal gains on us and gets bigger and closer. For a few seconds we, the camera and audience, are moving at the same speed as Kal. Then Kal amps it up and he pulls away from us, until he has sped out of sight. It’s an amazing scene.

  19. Lucas Grabeel has really unleashed his dark side. Kinda the opposite of his role on High School Musical. It’s nice to know that there are young actors who can play different characters 😉 I like him as Lex, and I’m glad they got all the old Lex’s back.

  20. Enjoyed this episode. There is something about having Lionel around that makes the show much more exciting.

  21. My question is: Will Rosenbaum play Super Lex (Connor Kent) or the Lex we all know and love? Is the real Lex dead or just waiting? My bet is the real Lex is not dead and Rosenbaum will be back to play the non-Super Lex.

I’m hoping they are holding off on using many effects because they want to go all out for the finale. I’m liking some of these season 10 episodes but I would like more effects.

  22. Wait a minute; if that was a clone of Lex and Clark, why didn’t the kryptonite affect him? Or did it?

    • @ Kahless

Of course there’s “the suit” technology that made Lana Super and Kryptonite didn’t affect that, in fact it absorbed it… they might be going back to that…

      • It could also be possible that around kryptonite, he is just human while with Clark, it could kill him.

        • The Kon-El I know is half as powerful as Superman, but is invulnerable to kryptonite. Think I got that from my DC encyclopedia, it’s somewhere in the basement. But Wikipedia disagree so maybe as the character evolved, so did his powers and vulnerability.

  23. It would be very nice if the Fans of Smallvile could see a new release Movie of Clark Kent AKA Tom Welling in a real Superman Movie using the same characters that are pictured in the Smallvile episodes for a real final sendoff of the series of (Smallvile). I sincerely believe, that all the Fans would really welcome such a movie on the Big Screen where Tom Welling would perform as the Real Superman of Steel.O. Rosado 2/26/11
