smallville season 9 Television Rewind: Smallville Pilot Discussion

Even though the Smallville series finale is right around the corner, The CW is throwing a bit of nostalgia to the fans with tonight’s re-aring of the 2001 Smallville series premiere.

Think about it: In 2001, The CW was set to premiere a new series from some folks named Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Yeah, the series was about Superman as a teenager, but they cast some weird fella named Tom Welling as Clark Kent. Look at him: Welling? What kind of name is that?

Accompanying Welling in the iconic role of Clark Kent was some bald kid named Michael Rosenbaum. Really CW? A teenage Lex Luthor? We had just survived Y2K and you expect us to accept some teenage Lex Luthor. Let me bust out my big ‘ole Nokia cell phone and call my friends to goof on this series.

And then there’s these characters Lana Lang and Chloe Sullivan. So.. is it Lang or Lane? Is Lana related to Lois? Ok, Lana isn’t related to Lois Lane, but Chloe is – even though Chloe’s last name is Sullivan. Wow, great move there. Chloe isn’t even a character in the comics. I bet she’ll stick around for one season – at least. That is, of course, if the series doesn’t get canceled before then.

I don’t know about you, but this is pretty close to what I originally thought about Smallville. And, no, don’t try to look back for a review from back then. In fact, Screen Rant hadn’t even by created yet. In 2001, Screen Rant was but a mere glint in the eye of Vic Holtreman.

Flash foward to today and I can’t believe that Smallville has been on the air for 10 years. If anything, I can’t believe that I watched a series for 10 years. A series that has its fair share of terrible moments. Don’t me wrong: I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching the series evolve into what it is today, but that doesn’t me there weren’t moments that I wanted to turn it off.

So tonight, thanks to a wonderful programming decision by The CW, Smallville fans are able to look back at the episode that started it all.

Looking back: how do you think the series premiere holds up? Would you have guessed that this was the beginning of a 10-year series that is now going to lead to Clark becoming Superman?

  1. Smallvill final will have back (Kristin) as Lana Lang and (Michael) as Lex Luthor. My friend worked on season 10 final and my news is for sure! Plus a Conner Kent spin off! This will take place at Smallville High School and The Kent Farm! Tom Welling will be cast as the guest star playing Superman!

  2. At first like Christopher Reeve mentioned he was, i was skeptical at first about the show. But it grew on me, the writing, effects they did were great & it was somthing fresh about Superman without the costume. I never expected the show would aslong as it did, 10 seasons. Especially when Michael Rosenbaum left, i gave the show a season, two if they were lucky without Lex. The one season i pretty much didn’t care for outta all of them was probly season 8. Every Season premire & finale never disappointed me cause i couldn’t wait to see what happens next within the next season. And how can i forget Christopher Reeve’s guest appearances on the show. I had goosebumps cause i for one felt the passing of the torch from one generation Superman to the next which is why im always hoping Tom Welling will be in the Superman costume in the upcoming Justice League film or a future Superman reboot if any. Michael Rosenbaum is the best actor who’s played Lex Luthor since John Shea imo. And Erica Durance was great if not little bit better than Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane. Like Welling, she just grown into the character throughout the seasons imo. Despite how they handled the character in the season, they made Doomsday look pretty good, good enough to convince me if they used Doomsday in a live-action film, they wouldn’t have to have him be cgi. Can’t wait to see how Darkseid emerges. Might not be in a Superman film, but i get to see one of my top favorite Superman villains finally in live-action hopefully. It’s a shame the show is ending but all good things have to end sometime. Im surprised the show didn’t end sooner than it did. It’s gonna be hard waiting for the 10th season dvd boxset to come out so i can watch all 10 seasons in a row.

  3. The Pilot was one of the best Smallville episodes. I’ll be very surprised if the finale holds up in comparison. My guess is that it won’t, despite the presence of Greg Beeman as director. The writers has lost their inspiration a couple of years ago, and the budget has been too reduced.

  4. this movie is one of the best i have watch, the problem is it is always not complete.
    why?

    • Huh?

      • lol

  5. Um, Screen Rant wasn’t the only thing that didn’t exist in 2001. The CW, as it’s referred to repeatedly here did not exist until 2006,thus season 1-5 of Smallville aired on The WB. Sorry to be a stickler, but as both someone in the comm/journ field & a SV viewer since day, one this stuff sticks out like green Kryptonite to me.:)

  6. Smallville! Is today’s take on the journey of Clark Kent! The pilot airing was the birth right to the new age of a super hero! We all know the story of Superman, and we all know the villians he has faced, and some over again, but we never new the boy. The one who will turn into one of earth’s greatest heros’. One who fans would idolize!
If anyone has followed the comics, you would knoe Lana Lang was the highschool sweetheart in the Silver age of Superman, and the creation of Chloe Sullivan, and even Pete bring us to the new age of a hero. THe show has followed many story lines staying true to the comis, and creating their own as well to introduce our hero’s to both old a new fans!

It is amazing how the pilot even leads into the new character of Oliver Queen, Remeber in the helicopter with the news paper that Lionel was reading, on the front page it mentioned the death of Queen’s parents! From day 1 the show creators, and writers knew what they were doing!

It has been an amazing 10 Seasons, one a true fan can admire! and hopefully even new Fans!

One show has had sucj a huge impact, that DC even created Chloe Sullivan into the comics! One show did all that! One show took us into the life of a boy who became a hero! a hero everyone has looked up to!

    Thank You Smallville!!
