smallville season 9 Smallville: First Official Pics Of Dr. Fate, Hawkman & Stargirl

With one holiday down we’re coming ever closer to the premiere of Smallville: Absolute Justice and the closer we get, the more we get to see, and today The CW has finally released some official pictures of Justice Society members Dr. Fate and Stargirl, as well as some tussling about from Green Arrow and Hawkman. Hopefully, this trend will continue so that I won’t have to spend time pulling stills from YouTube trailers.

Last week we brought you some awesome (and I do mean awesome) pictures of Dr. Fate, Sandman and a little glimpse of Green Lantern. Sure, the pictures were from a teaser trailer, but I think the general consensus was that they looked great and the excitement continued to build for this movie.

While I’m not attempting to set fans up for a fall, I do have to be completely honest and say that the pictures released today, the “official” pictures, kind of make me take pause and wonder if I’ve got things all wrong with how “awesome” I thought the costumes looked.

Let me just show you this pictures now and we can talk after, if you’re still in the mood.

Is it just me or do you see a big difference between the photos released today and the ones released previously? Even the pictures of Hawkman that we previously showed didn’t look this… odd? I’m not saying that they look bad, I’m just saying that they look, kind of, janky.

Still, far be it for me to say something bad about Smallville as they’ve had a great run this season and I think maybe I can justify these pictures… They’re bad pictures. That’s all. Really bad pictures. If you look at Green Arrow, his costume looks horrible as well and in the series, I love his costume. I think that these pictures are too bright and too “staged” so they give off this weird vibe. I have a feeling that when it comes down it, when we see them on the screen, they’ll look amazing (well, maybe except for Stargirl).

…fingers crossed.

Am I being too harsh? Do these costumes look good in the pictures?

Maybe I’m still full of Tryptophan from all that turkey and need someone to set me straight.

  1. yes your ful of tryptofan the pics look great! and stargirl looks aweome!

  2. @andre

Really? She looks like she was pulled off the floor of the San Diego Comic-Con. 8)

  3. I think that the tint and finish of these photos is very different from what we will see in the show. The teaser had a certain tinge to it and I am hoping that will be the case for the movie. Because these stills put to much gloss on the suits.

  4. I think they’re meant to look “janky”, they’re old school superheroes, from a simpler time. Like Watchmen, what was stylish in the 60s and 70s is lame today.

If anything, the retroness of the JSA justifies Smallville’s tradition of having practical, modern suits instead of spandex and capes.

    Smallville is 21st Century, people.

  5. I am cautiously optimistic ,
But remember all the hype For Legion last fall and how dissapointed some people were over that .
All I am saying is it can go either way.

  6. Doctor Fates costume looks a bit too muscular .
That just doest fit the character IMO.
Stargirl reminded me of a cowgirl in a rodeo .

  7. @dillan that’s nice and all but your wrong, that justifies that smallville should put costumes that dont look like crapas black leather more often and keep true to comic book costumes!

  8. @gary i think this hype will be justified unlike the legion ep this is 2hours!:)

  9. @vic completely disagree it looks like she walked right out of a Jsa issue as it should be!

  10. Where is Adam West??? LOL!! These pics look awful. KAPOW!!!

  11. @andre

You didn’t get it.. don’t you?

  12. It works for the tv movie..looks close enough. Now if this was a motion Picture,I would be worried.

  13. I still haven’t seen one episode of Smallville but it seems to be very popular. I am afraid to watch the very first episode because if I like it then I’ll have a ton of catching up to do.

  14. M-Cat, if you really want to get into it, my suggestion: Check out Wikipedia and youtube for clips and summaries of the previous seasons of the series, but mostly watch season 8 before season 9 because they are very important to what’s going on right now. The show can kind of be broken down like this: Seasons 1-4 were his years in high school, while crushing on Lana and being best friends with Lex Luthor seasons 5-7 were his years in college and on the verge of being a adult while dating Lana, leading to a breakup, causing her and Lex to get together, and Lex ultimately turning his back on Clark and becoming his mortal enemy, and now seasons 8 and 9 have been about his first years at the Daily Planet along with creating his double identity and being put in more expected Superman type situations. Besides, season 8 in many ways is when the series became like a new show, since it was handed over to new showrunners. Plus, in my opinion, season 8 returned it back to being a quality superhero show. And season 9 has just taken it up to a even better level.

  15. I think the images shown on the trailer looked so different because they were from a flashback perhaps?

just start at the beggining with Smallville, the first 3 seasons are the best, but every season is full of amazing stories and some great acting, don’t let the bad stuff put you off. I’ve been watching Smallville since the very beggining. And it is one of my favourite shows. If you are in anyway a fan of superman, watch it, the way Clark and Lex are best friends, and watching their friendship completely deteriorate over seven seasons is brilliant.

Lots of people hate smallville, but it is approaching ten years, for scifi/fantasy television, not Manu other shows have made it that fat.

This season might be the best yet.

  16. Yes, these costumes look like crap.
It’s a shame because they were created and made by Eric Kripke.

  17. @Dudeman totally agree with you Smallville Rocks and just keeps getting better with age like a fine wine!!

  18. Pictures of their costumes look good for a tv show. About the costumes, c’mon people! its only a 2 hr event, not a feature film. If you can look at the bigger picture WB and DC Comics can take notes on everyone’s reactions after the 2 hr event and see how they could bring these characters to the big screen. Id say it was about time when i heard about a Green Lantern film officially coming out aswell as film adaptions of The Flash & Wonder Woman and thought finally other DC Comic book heroes other than Superman & Batman coming. Atleast the costumes are stayin true to the traditional JSA unless people prefer them all to wear almost the same costumes as we seen in the X-men films. Anyways im sure the 2 hr event will be good despite whats being revealed.

  19. I must say, Hawkman looks alot better in that photo than the earlier one that was posted.

  20. i love smallville, but did someone say great acting? eeh.. thats wrong, Tom is a bad actor, very bad. some actors in the show are good, like lionel and lois, but a lot of them are crappy. just started watching the ninth season and it looks good. (i dont mind the bad action that much, tho it mostly comes from superman)

  21. @chrisj these pics are Fine and awesome! and im glad there not putting Stupid black leather xmen costumes thats getting Old stupid and repetetive about time costumes actually stuck close to source Material and chris J the film was given a higher budget then a regualr tv movie so i expect it to be great

  22. You guys/gals are telling me to check out Smallville but Im not the corny old school costume liking type. I liked Watchmen but the costumes just made it seem kind of 80′s I guess. I know it was designed for that time but it still seems kind of off to me. Not sure why.

  23. bad acting* sorry not action>.<

  24. Tom Welling may not be the greatest actor but he isn’t a bad actor by any means, the role of Clark is always a strange part because he isn’t a human, Welling portrays this alien living amongst humans very well.
The acting on Smallville has never been a problem for me, with the exception of Kristen Kreuk, whose Lana was one of the most annoying characters in tv history. But everyone else who has been on the show has performed quite admirably.

These costumes look a bit retro, 80ish, because the JSA were around then. Otherwise Clark or Oliver would have heard of them before now.

  25. M-Cat

Usually the costumes in Smallville are quite modern, Green Arrow’s for example, or Clarks new look costume. These ones are deliberately old fashioned.

    Hawkman looks awesome

  26. Andre

I prefer to have conversations with intelligent folk or adults (I apologize if you’re a kid) but I’ll respond to your comment anyway. Read the whole comment before you lash out. I said I realize that Watchmen was set in the 80′s but still seems corny to me.

  27. Andre ,
even though Legion was a 2 parter,
Its still 2 hours of television.
Remember , this was originally a 2 part episode
they just decided to show it as a 2 hour movie because of all the hype it generated.
these are two single hours put together.
the first part was originally entitled”society”,
and the second part was entitled “Legends .”
its the same two parter its just all shown on one night under a different title “Absolute Justice”.

  28. Legion wasn’t a 2 parter!

  29. Dr. Sam and Dudeman

I will check out because of your recommendations but I will force you guys to watch ROTF over and over again if Smallville stinks! lol :)
