Smallville: Season 10 Will Be Its Last
May 19, 2010 by Anthony OcasioThe day that Smallville fans have been dreading is finally here. The CW will announce on Thursday that the long-running superhero drama will be ending after Season 10.

[Update: Be Sure To Check out our Smallville Season 10 Premiere Review!]
After a truly amazing ninth season finale, Smallville fans were hoping to catch a glimpse of the promised 2013 future in which Clark Kent has thrown The Blur costume away and finally become Superman.
Unfortunately, that day will never come as The CW is set announce on Thursday, during their upfront, that Smallville season 10 will also be the series’ last.
Tom Welling, proving that not only is he faster than a speeding bullet, but also The CW’s public relations, revealed the news of Smallville’s final season to Hollywood Life while attending a party celebrating the release of legendary film producer Jerry Weintraub’s new book. Welling said:
“Season 10 of Smallville will be the last season”
While the news is a huge blow to Smallville fans that have invested nine years in the series, keep in mind that there’s still one more season left. With the foreshadowing provided in the season 9 finale, there’s a good chance that the season 10 will not only be its last, but also its best.
We all know that by the end of Smallville, Clark has to not only fly, but also become Superman. Hopefully, with all the “training” required for him to reach those goals, The CW will at least give us a couple episodes with Clark as the legendary Man of Steel, instead of waiting until the final moments of the series finale to have him don his infamous red and blues (but don’t bet on it).
Unfortunately, no matter how much flying Clark does, there will still be one big piece of the Superman puzzle missing: Lex. A couple of months ago, actor Michael Rosenbaum stated that he will not be returning to Smallville. Although, with Smallville coming to an end, maybe his former cast members can coax him into returning – even if it is only for one episode.
…a man can dream, right?

What do you think of Smallville finally ending? What are you expecting out of the final season? Will Clark become Superman? Is there any way Michael Rosenbaum will return to the series?
The tenth and final season of Smallville returns this fall on The CW.

Around the web:

I am from India and I have been watching Smallville since first episode, when I was 20. After every season finale I just hoped and prayed that there should be another season. I am so glad to have witnessed such a great finale to season 9. While browsing to find when season 10 would be aired, I got to know of this awfully disappointing news that season 10 would be the last of Smallville. I can’t imagine there would be any other show that could match up to Smallville. Like many even I believe that there could be no match for the role of Clark/Sups other than Tom Welling.
My heart sinks to know that the show is going to end. I sincerely hope that there is a change in decision and that I along with millions of fans across the globe get to see Tom Welling in Smallville not for the last time in season 10….
NOO IT CAN’T END!!! I WON’T ACCEPT IT!
I have watched Smallville since the first episode. There has been nothing that has come between myself and the set ever night that it has been on for the past 9 seasons! This is absolutely my favorite TV show of all times and I am very sad to see it end! It does seem like the really great shows are the ones that get cancelled. I mean come on, if General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, and the Simpsons can still hold the ratings to stay on the air surely a show of Smallville`s caliber could as well! I know I`m ranting a lot here but it`s just very disapointing to hear that one of the things that you look forward to every week is going to be ending soon. I do understand that all good things must come to an end but just ain`t ready to give it up. I would like to thank the CW, the writers, the cast members, and anyone else involved in bringing the show to the air for the past nine seasons that we`ve already enjoyed. I also want to say that I would hope that if there is ever another Superman movie thats made (I hope there is) that Tom Welling will have the oportunity to play the role that in my opinon he has made famous here in modern day. That`s right I don`t feel like there has been anyone since Christoper Reeve that has fit, or played the role any better than Tom! The last thing is I again just want to say that I appreciate everyone that has had a part in bringing the show to my living room for the past nine seasons. I`m looking forward to season ten!!
it realy is sad to even think abt it,cloe, green arrow, clark, i wonder why they do that, but then fake series like 24 never end
we were hoping to see the reunion of clark en his team mates, they call it aworking progress, come on season10 oh noooooooooooooo
I hope that Smallville goes out with a long lasting explosion!
I doubt this is the last season, there is still more stories to wrap up like what happened to Jor-El’s avatar in the Fortress, what happened to Lex, Major Zod becoming General Zod, the Justice League, Superman’s suit and his destiny to become the Man of Steel and achieve flight.
Major Zod was named General Zod on the last episode of Season 9. Although I don’t know if this was a mistake. If it wasn’t, his transition was very poorly portrayed! He’s already seen the suit left by his mother and Lex’s return is all dependant on Michael’s return..
As much as it hurts me to say, I think Season 10 may be the last. Though I’m with you. I don’t want it to end just yet.. but to have it go on for more than two more seasons wouldn’t be the best thing in my eyes.
OK. So it doesn’t matter if that was a legitimate promotion to General because he’s not the REAL Zod. He’s a clone. The REAL Zod was promoted to General on Krypton.
Lex is alive, we all know this. And, like you said, it’s all dependent on if Michael comes back.
I honestly am SO relieved that this show is coming to an end. It’s been a long time coming. They have beaten this dead horse so much, its upsetting. He finally realizes his destiny, has the suit, and has the resources. Just make him fly, wear the suit and let it be done. He shouldn’t go past 25 without turning into Superman. He DEFINITELY shouldn’t be in a relationship with Lois Lane as Clark Kent before Superman exists. Everything is wrong and they need to just end it.
Honestly, at this point, they’ve altered the history of Superman so much that this isn’t really an origin story of Superman. This is now only an origin story of The Blur.
no way…smallville can’t end..there are those of us who love that show ..and we don’t won’t it to end….its the best show on….and it will always be…CAN’T END
Well what about him going away for 12 years for his training? Surely the few years on earth shouldnt be the epic training Jor-El gives him in the first movie… He werent Superman until he was 30 (since he went away for 12 years to study when he was 18)
Dont think this series as an origin story, think of it as a spinoff
help me nooooo
i have every season of smallville on dvd. I WILL cry if this is true. this is the best show in the world. The stories, special effects, just brings my heart into it. i feel like i know these people. Clark must fly and Lois must know that Clark is the Blur or Superman.Im 46 and i can’t wait until 8pm Friday nights. I tape them and cut commercials so i can rewatch them when nothings on tv them i buy them on dvd. I’m truely devastated about this. I think Lex needs to make another apperance. Chloe and Oliver are a great pair. I love Lois’s personality. She’s beautiful and tall enough for Clark (wow so hot). There are sure some romantic scenes with Lois and Clark i enjoyed seeing Annette (martha the red queen) also. Clark must fly. I love everyone who plays a part in the making of this masterpiece. Please don’t stop making these why would you do this to us smallville addicts? I truely love and appreciate everyone who makes this show such a masterpiece. i would love to be a character on this show. Please at least make it a double 2 hour special if this is the end. Your Breaking my heart i will miss all of you smallville people. Tom Welling, Allison Mack, Erica Durance, Justin Hartley, Cassidy Freeman, Annette OTool, John Schneider, John Glover, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kruek, and guest stars, Jensen Ackles, Zod, Pete Ross, Aaron Ashmore, Whitney and any one else I left out. All producers, photographers, ect. i love and appreciate all of you. dawn snow
I just wanted to agree with Dawn about Smallville being an amazing show. I’ve been hooked since Day one. There are more than a few generations of people that are fascinated by everything that Superman has stood for and still has room to stand for. I’m 54 years old. I played out being Superman when I was a kid. This was when George Reeves was Superman, and that was in black and white. I sneaked a sheet out of the house and made a cape with it. I lived on a farm so played Superman in the barn. I got my head cracked open by a pulley that fell from the barn loft as I was swinging on a rope from one side of the barn to the other and then fell. The pulley fell on top of my head. There is so much more to cover and so many possible turns the show can take. I am going to hold out hope that someone at the CW is intelligent enough to see they can take this Smallville and turn it into something else. I read the idea that some came up with. Change it to “Metropolis”. I really like the idea. I think it’s great. It’s just one possible twist. Smallville has come of age. Let’s step up one level. There is still so much that can be done. With today’s technology the special effects would be even more awesome. Just one moret thought though. Once a character has been set and played for this long with someone like Tom it wouldn’t be the same with someone else, so come on Tom. Don’t be afraid of those tights. You would look great in red and blue. I know maybe some of the characters want to move on but a few more years would’nt be that bad would it? Most of you guys are young enough that you could still have a long and satisfying career even if you gave us a few more unforgettable years of something we have loved for 10 years. To be honest, I am heartbroken with the thought the show is ending. Please, turn it into something else and get ready for the best. Thanks!!
Honestly, if they wrap things up without him becoming superman, I’ll feel like I wasted a lot of time watching the show.
I hope that Tom Welling is playing a cruel joke and there will be more seasons. But if so, I think they should not only being Micheal Rosenbaum back, but pit him against clark and his crew. That or have it be just Clark and Lex.
awww.. i hope they will continue up to become superman until clark and lane will get married.
i love smallville rather than superman movies…
smallville can have their sequel as superman.. with same cast and directors.
I hope that there will be more seasons of smalle ville, because its the best show it have, where people can enjoy and also wanna see the time when clark will be the husband of louis lane…….
It truly is a shame as this is one of the few series on TV that really keeps me hooked, and in all honestly could go for another couple of seasons just to wrap a few things up and possible introduce Mr. Wayne to the equation, considering that in the comics that Supes greatest ally, and sponsor to build the JLA’s HQ…in space may I add is the Bat himself, could get a little shine! Also a new Dr. Fate would be quite nice! All in all I think that 9 and soon to be 10 years is a along time and the thing is that DC fans will always want more as well as just regular viewers, even though I am Marvel fan through and through, there are a few DC comic hero’s that should always be respected for who they are, and what they have bought to the table! If the next series is really the end then I hope that there is at least 30-40 episodes to keep us all happy…oh and a couple double bills wouldn’t hurt
Signing Off
Marvel
I am waiting that smallville will return and hoping that season 10 will not be the last season, I’m still hoping that it will be continue more and brings more exciting.
This is the last season I have no doubt about it. Michael won’t be coming back to play his role as Lex even for one episode because of his ego. I haven’t seen him do anything better since Smallville. Maybe if the money is good he may come back… But I wouldn’t bet on it. He doesn’t care about the fans obviously, but himself. A True prodigy of Lex Luthor, ha ha.
i would hate to see such a grate show go. i hope they keep going with the smallville and keep us watching for more years to come. much love and hope for smallville
Bring back Lex in seasons 11 and 12, and don’t end this series at season 10.
DO NOT end this~! May not be the best show on earth but I love it. DID it not say to be continued at the end of last episode? Come on! The comic keeps on so should the show!!!
Its not done…we love it! keep it going!
I can’t wait for this! It better be awesome,it’s the last season! My prediction is that with lex “DEAD” as they would have us believe,he most likely isn’t,OR he cloned himself. As for Clark donning the legendary outfit,and/or a few episodes of him officially being superman well, hopefully, but shows these days leave the transformation of a character for the last moments, picture clark flying off,and/or donning the uniform in the last moments,BUT as the article says “don’t bet on it”,and i really DO hope Michael Rosenbaum returns,I like his portrayal of Lex.
I think Clark should end up telling Lois his secret. Also Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) should come back on the show because Supermans enemy has always been Lex Luther and without him, Clark has no rivalry against.
Well I agree with all these people here. I to am a huge Smallville fan, and I have gotten quite a bit of people into it as well. Does this wonderful show really have to end, and is that really what the actors/actresses want to? I mean all those people did such a wondeful job in this show, and I love how the show follows Clark Kents life from a young boy coming to Earth in a Meteor Shower all the way to an adult, and in time learning all the good, and bad things that takes place to being a super hero. This is the greatest show that I have ever watched, and have enjoyed it ever since I watched my very 1st episode which was in the 2nd Season. Does this show really have to end? I mean it would be nice to see Lana Lang again. After all she never did die she just absorbed alot of Kryptonite so she is now a weakness to Clark. However that dosn’t mean that she has to stop being a hero. Also as everyone else has pointed out the Justice League has seemed to come together nicely. Also you can always change the name from Smallville to Metropolis seeing how the story really isn’t in Smallville anymore, but is in Metropolis. This really is the best show that I have ever seen, and I really don’t want to see it go, but if its what the actors/actresses wan’t to do then all I can say is thank you for 10 Great, and Fantastic Years of Smallville! I would also like to give a special Thank You to Tom Welling( Clark Kent/Superman) Justin Hartley( Oliver Queen/Green Arrow) Allison Mack( Chloe Sullivan) Erica Durance( Lois Lane) Cassidy Freeman( Tess Mercer) Callum Blue( Major Zod) Annette O Toole( Martha Kent/Red Queen) Also actors that are now off the show–> Sam Witwer ( Davis Bloome/ Doomsday)Michael Rosenbaum( Lex Luthor) Kristin Kreuk( Lana Lang) John Glover Lionel Luthor) Aaron Ashmore(Jimmy Olson) Laura Vandervoort Kara/Supergirl) John Schneider( Jonathan Kent) Jensen Ackles (Jason Teague) Sam Jones 3(Pete Ross) Eric Johnson( Whitney Fordman) AND to all the other actors, and actresses that was not a big part of the cast, but appeared in the show. You all made this show incredibly amazing, and all of you portrayed your characters perfectly. Without you we wouldn’t have had the privilige to see this wonderful masterpiece with all the special effects, Mystery, Action, Adventure, and Drama that this show became over the years. From the beginning this show has wanted their audience on their toes, and always asking for more, and thats exactly what we all got. I couldn’t have asked for anything better than this, and I wish all of you the best of luck, and I hope you all continue to appear in, and or movies, and shows! God Bless Every Single 1 Of You, and Thx Again for 10 Great Years Of The Show We All Enjoy, and Love! =)
sad to say this, but it’s good that they’re ending it when it’s still good. Too many good shows are being cut halfway, leaving the story hanging, i.e. Heroes. That would be even sadder. It’s good to wrap things up, give it a fabulous ending, and let all 10 seasons be a legend, like the series Friends. Wouldn’t it be more disheartening to see characters being cut from the show, as in “Grey’s Anatomy”, so often that the show loses it’s spirit when key casts leave due to money, and many other stupid reasons. What will smallville drags on, and one day the cast for Lois or Oliver had to leave like Michael Rosenbum, leaving a crack in the show. I would rather it ends perfectly soon. And let us move on. I wouldn’t say no to the next “smallville returns” or superman series or something as such. Let’s just hope a new beginning is waiting at the finishing line.
Well. i just say the finaley. Smallville has made a great inpakt on me. Every episode has been out of movie quality. Very nice. It feels a bit sad that its ending. But if they cant keep making it good, its better to end than to keep making it less great. I hope that if this is the ending, that they make it at least 30 episodes, and a great ending.
smallville-fan.
Man it sucks so much that they are endin this show, so thats why im expecting a lot from this last season. but it is said that even though the show is at its last season, its also going to be its best. who knows… anything can happen, for instance clark flying or lex returning to make clark reach his destiny as superman. and DARKSEID is also said to make an appearance but who knows. i would like to see what he would look like.
If darkseid does show up i hope its more a fight than the doomsday finale. besides this is the last season so at least have clark and darkseid beat each other down. i mean..doomsday was ok but wasnt much a fight and still no one even knows what happened besides being buried alive.
There are way to many plots and sub plots to wrap up in a single season. Season 10 cannot be the last series. If they try and tie it up too quickly it will end up a dismal failure like Stargate SG1 – Season 10 ( a great series till they decided to can it)
Here’s to hoping we don’t see another mistake like that.
For all of you that keep saying Lois needs to find out Clark and the Blur/Superman are one and the same all I have to say is rewatch the last episode. SHE KNOWS ALREADY!!! Blur kisses lois in the dark on the rooftop, takes off, and lois says Clark. She recognized his kiss.
This cannot be finale because there are so many things to uncover:
1) Where is Lex ?
2) What happened to voice of Jor-El in Fortress ?
3) Who is the voice of Orb ?
4) When Perry White becomes editor at Daily Planet ?
5) When Lois is getting married with Clark ?
6) Where did Kara go in season 8 ?
And maybe more…
Don’t fail with this show at season 10, reach to 12th season.
That should be finale, how we see in Clark’s dream and exactly what Dr. Fate saw.
Going to have to disagree with most people here. The show has dragged on too long and it needs to end. You can only recycle the same story so many times and the drama aspects to show are a puke fest and easily the worst part of the show yet take up a lot of screen time.
The only redeeming value to this show is the fantasy aspect of superheroes, but other than that, the characters are inconsistent and not interesting. The actors are good and they should all move on to something else.
I love Smallville as much as the next person, but there is one thing I want to say to the people who do not wish this series to end. Some of you are saying it can’t end because Perry White isn’t the Daily Planet editor, and Lex isn’t back yet, and so on. But I just want to say that did you ever think that this is an alternate universe Superman? I don’t know much about the Superman comics, but I don’t think Superman ever faced Doomsday before becoming Superman, or teamed up with Black Canary, Green Arrow, etc. before the Justice League was officially formed. Anyway, just an idea I thought I should throw out there. That would also explain the “premature” death of Lex and why he can’t even fly yet.
They did a great job of making this the best show to watch on tv. I would hope they would rap it up with a blast and continue with a movie now and then just like the X-Files did. Would you go see it?
I think they should end “smallville” and start “metropolis” there is still alot that can be covered in the superman universe, to see batman for one and i think the cast wouldn’t mind having job security for a few more years. Either way i hope if CW drop it another company will pick it up there is alot of money to be made which should attract some fat cats
@ Rick
It would be a good idea, infact they should of made season 7 or 8 the last of Smallville and change the title to Metropolis during Season 9 i thought since Clark’s spent alot of time in Metropolis already. I doubt they’re use Batman, especially when Nolan still has one film on the way even if its not anytime soon this year. We’d be lucky to see just Bruce Wayne before he travels the world to train to become Batman. If they did, they should do it proper and have Bruce who isnt fond about Lex’s kind business tactics at Lexcorp Maybe? Unless they keep it to Luthorcorp. They had to be careful not to have Bruce be like Oliver Queen who has a grudge against Lex or his company. From i read, other than the last episode, Tom doesnt seem fond about wearing the Superman costume on a regular basis. I hope they get him to reconsider cause i like the show Lois & Clark: New Adventures Of Superman and i think Erica Durance & Tom Welling can do just as a great job as Teri Hatcher & Dean Cain did in Superman show titled Metropolis. The Title sounds good, its fresh, show will feel modern, more than two great actors who can make guest appearances or become regulars again. Someone should write this all to WB and let them know what a great idea the show could be, to take their clark Kent/Superman to another level.
@ WallyWest
WOW. The first thing said that makes sense to me. I like your and Ricks take on Metropolis. Cant watch Lois and Clark anymore BECAUSE it is too outdated, but a more dated fresh take would be a good idea. I dont know why everyone keeps talkin bout bringing in Batman. Its not going to happen in my opinion, and I dont like the idea either. The others were just to give it another angle and make it fresh again, but Bringing in Batman I think would actually make it more stale. been there, did that, now they are desperate kind of thing. This is a SPINOFF of Superman, not the actual comic put in a tv show.
men! am in kenya and i really don’t want smallville 2 end, we wan’t 2 see justice league first.am a really big fan, please let it continue.
wow im amazed. you see us fans think about the show and the producers think about money. youd think thered be enough money for them with us buying their #$%^ to keep on going. smallville was part of a reality for me. thanks for ripping my heart in 2. way to go CW. if 10 is the end and its true im never buying another cw show again and ill burn my tv.
