[UPDATE: Apparently producer Al Gough has changed his mind and wants Smallville to go 8 seasons.]
Over at JewReview.net there’s an interview with Michael Rosenbaum who plays Lex Luthor on CW’s Smallville and he confirms that next season (which is Season 7) will be the last one for the series.
Rosenbaum said:
“Yeah, we’re finishing up our sixth year and next year is the last year.”
Sounds like confirmation to me. Of course I reported that Smallville would only go seven seasons a year and a half ago. 
The show’s ratings are strong and it’s as popular as ever. I think it’s great that they’ll be going into next season KNOWING it’s the last one. That way they can map out a season-long arc that will hopefully flow really well and give a fantastic close to the series. It should be the culmination of the the Clark/Lex relationship, finally bringing Lex completely to the dark side:
“…next year is going to be the biggest year of all; it’s the final year and everyone’s going to see what Lex Luther is really capable of. All hell’s going to break loose!”
I know that there are a lot of fans who would like the series to go on and on, but I hope the producers stick to their guns and end the show while it’s on top. There’s nothing worse than watching a great show stick around a season or two too long.

OH MAN I can’t believe that they are stopping at seven. Is that cause its a lucky number?? Well I have enjoyed every minute of Smallville and I have every season up to 5 on DVD, and I will never get tired of this show not in a million years. It is the best that I have ever seen. I just wish that they would keep it going. But I gusee if they make too many people might get tired of it? Or run out of ideas for the show or someting. But I love the show and I will eventually have every season on DVD!! Ciao!!!
Basically, yeah… that’s what happens. They run out of ideas and there’s nowhere for the characters to go past a certain point. It’s known as “jumping the shark”, which comes from an episode of the old TV show “Happy Days” where the character called Fonzie, who was the tough guy of the show jumped over a shark tank with his motorcycle.

Actually Vic, Fonzie jumped a shark on waterskis. It was the ridiculous image of Fonzie wearing the jacket with a life preserver on top of it, and swim trunks instead of his trademark jeans, that was the epitomy of ‘going too far’.
Around that time, Evil Kinevil jumped a shark tank on a motorcycle on live TV. The show was ‘That’s Incredible’. That is why it is often confused with the Fonzie stunt.

oh yeah, this is the best tv series i have ever watched. i have all 5 collection of smallville dvds. i will never get fed up of watching it. i hope clark will get into red and blue suit atleast in seventh series.

i am so shocked to hear the show is ending after 7 years but then again yeh it will end up running out of ideas so im glad they are sending it of while every one loves it lol and i hope clark gets into his blue and red suit and that lois and clark get together well at least in the final episode they could express there true feelings lol and i think chloe should die and lana 2 lol althou i do love them to bits lol xxx
well, i think it was very good series, but at the biginning we had more peaple to see, so didnt have to see the same faces over and over, which i hated the end of season 5.i like crark kent
please keep smallville going
this is truly the best show ever. I am a really big fan I even have my roomdecorated like the cave walls. I think its great to see them making a season 7. I hope to see clark on redk again peace out smallville fans
the only way they can put the suit on him is if they make him wear glasses for afew episodes otherwise everybodies going to know who he is wellthats just my opinion
if they just happen to make season 8 they should kill off clark at the end of 7 by lex luthor then get revived somehow that way they can show just how powerful lex really is
oh they should make lex try to study clarkbut get interupted by the justice league
I can’t believe they will stop at 7. I think there is too much money to be made yet and we all know money rules the world even though we don’t always admit it.
If they can keep Friends running for 10 years (and a darn good job of it), then surely a bit of imagination can keep a show like Smallville going for 10.
My recommendation and prediction is 10!
Well anything is possible, but it looks to me like they’re going to end it. You mention “Friends”… I think that show overstayed it’s welcome, personally. Should have ended a couple of years sooner than it did because after a while the characters become parodies of themselves.

i heard chole’s character became so popular that DC comics is planning to make her an official character, isn’t this great?
anyway, smallvile should be allowed to twist the story a bit and not stick to the other superman’s story or versions. perhaphs why should clark get together with Lois, and not stay with the true love of his life which is Lana. I’d be great for if the show did whatever they decide to do with the characters,whithout having to follow teh “real” Superman Story, Don’t you agree?
lets just jope seven is not it’s last season, not just yet.

know way you cant sotp at season 7 i love this show its the best ever i could never got fed up watching it, and if you do stop it i will watch them all over agen and agen so please dont stop them. if its because you will run out off ideas cant they just use the ideas from the new adventures of superman like re write them or something that would be cool. when does season 7 start? i cant wait!! i hope you make the right choise and keep it going ok bye
lana can’t be dead (read some comics). chloe on the other hand no idea. the only thing confirmed is 1 more season. they should at least think about a spinoff with tom in the lead (superman) rosenbaum (lex) claims season 7 to be his last. jonathan needs to be revived/cloned from his dna in the caves. the fortress of solitude needs to be reawakened. clark needs to learn to fly. as well as get his ice breath, possible episode in season 7 for this. lois should get chloe’s job at the planet and get away from the tabloids. and martha needs to get enough time to make the suit for clark, or at least the cape (from his baby blanket in his spacecraft). i agree they should keep the story going in one way or another, continuation or spinoff either way there is so much more of the story to go if they do their research they will realize that there are at least 20 seasons worth of story without taking anything from the other tv series to go.
Well I’ll give them credit for one thing: every Superman show up till now has been about a big tease all episode waiting for Clark Kent to stop mucking about and PUT ON THE DAMN SUIT.
Smallville… Smallville has made us wait SEVEN DAMN YEARS for that. Kudos.
But it went bad round season 3 and never recovered. You can tell how bad a show is by the number of times per episode the phrase “Oh my God!” is used.
I also give them kudos for finding the courage to make Clark a self-absorbed, careless obnoxious prig, that’s brave an’ all, but it isn’t the character. I guess they couldn’t make him both likeable AND interesting… but they managed to make him neither.
I mean how many times has he carelessly let the villain of the week die (everyone except Lex) and shown no concern at all – even when said villain was more misguided than evil? That’s no Superman. Understandable if it was all part of a convincing arc, some kind of bildungsroman, but I’m guessing (with one season to go) not.
