Lois and Clark in SmallvilleSmallville has had us emotionally dancing over the last year.  First, we had to wait and wonder if they were headed into a 9th season.  Obviously (now), a new Smallville season is coming.

In conjunction with a 9th season given a green light, it’s been assumed that Tom Welling renewed his contract for that season, although it hasn’t been officially announced.

Unsubstantiated (someone said it, but provided no source or link) rumors say Welling signed a multi-year contract, but I can’t find anything to back that up.  Better yet, let me take it one step further:  We are presuming that Welling renewed his contract!  Didn’t think of that one, did ya?

We’ve not seen any official announcement on a contract renewal between The CW and Welling, have we?  The big question is: If for some wild and odd reason he didn’t renew, would the show go into a 9th season and how?

In a December ’08 TV Guide issue, they wrote that while the studio was pondering if there was going to be a 9th season, the producers were getting ready to pitch a spin-off starring Phil Morris, who plays Martian Manhunter.  I wonder if they are still keeping that in the works?

But enough of messing with your head.  The newest thing I have my fingers on is that we have a new scenario to ponder and we have a new guessing game for the Screen Rant readers to play.

The new game is what two characters in Smallville are going to die.  They’ve been coined as pivotal characters and their deaths won’t be the kind where they keep coming back like we see in other shows.  In Smallville, death is the end.  That’s refreshing… and nerve wracking.

Additionally, the producers of the show, who have been developing a rather nice season so far, do have a few twists in store for us for their 9th season of Smallville on The CW.

Future Look at This Week’s Episode:

In the upcoming episode that my lead-in picture is from, we’ve got a desperate Linda Lake (Tori Spelling) trying to blackmail Clark into giving her a scoop on the mystery hero of Metropolis.  She needs a boost to her career.  Lake thinks she can blackmail Clark because she knows his secret.  Clark refuses to let himself be blackmailed and does something else…  well, you’ll see on March 12th – I can’t give everything away.  Then where would be the fun and suspense of watching?  But I gotta say, I hope it’s some sort of dream episode ’cause I don’t like where this episode goes if it’s not.

A gift for the fans:

No, that’s not Superdog Tom is walking!  This is a candid image I found of Tom Welling out in public out on the net.  Thought you’d like the eye candy.  The dog is cool!

  1. By the way, who said that 2 characters will die? Could it be a rumor? Allison, if they let you, please come back. Don’t leave poor Clark to deal with Lois by himself all next season. I know they end up together but that is in the future after he becomes Superman ( he is but he isn’t). Why rush it? I’m still waiting to see the chemistry between the two actors- not quite there yet. Clark (Tom) still doen’t look at Lois (Erica) the way he looked at Lana. Erica is a fine actress (with a natural body I suspect) but she looks at him like a love-sick puppy. Is that characteristic of Lois? Did she ever look at CLARK that way, or was it SUPERMAN? (Comic book fans, please tell me). Clark loves Lana- Superman will love Lois. Clark doesn’t fly- Superman WILL fly. “Smallville” is over. I hope the show will be about more than “Lois and Clark” and I have to admit that I am curious as to what season 9 will bring. Good or bad I plan to see it to the end.

  2. As much I as CAN’T IMAGINE the show without her, I think Chloe would be the girl that dies. Tess isn’t a vet so I reckon the writers may kill her off in the same episode and then just when we least expect it Chloe dies too.

This would have a HUGE impact on Clark in so many ways forcing him finally to accept his destiny to become the Red-Blue Blur (or hopefully Superman!).

The other person would have to be another strong male, not Davis because Davis isn’t a vet either. Martian Manhunter? Green Arrow?

Doomsday will die too – it’s so obvious, we know that every time he dies, he comes back stronger so he’ll be dead for now (and come back in a future beyond the timeline of Smallville).

I’d LOVE to see Jor-El back and the relatonship between him and Clark finally be strong and positive. We’ve had too many seasons with Clark vs Jor-El.

Whatever happens though – bring it on!!!

  3. It has just been announced that the legion member Cosmic Boy played by Ryan Kennedy will be in the finale. Also, they might just break the Smallville “No Costume, No Flying Rule” for Season 9, but that’s just a rumor no official statement.

  4. I can’t wait for season 9, it was hard pulling Tom for another season, but according to Kryptonsite.com, he has signed a multi – season contract. So hopefully there is a season 10. Also, as for the finale of S8, the producers and writers won’t even tell the cast who is dying, they are just giving the cast members their scenes. They said “We are trying to hold off as long as we can.

  5. It’ll be funny is Clark Kent dies, lol.

  6. In some ways, they could kill Clark off and have Jor – El bring him back. However, the producers have said that there will be no return for the two characters who “bite the dust”

  7. That’s why it’ll be hilarious if Clark is one to die. Imagine the worldwide “WTF??” that would generate, lmao!

  8. can’t be clark because hes superman. can’t be louis because shes in all the movies. can’t be jimmy because he is louis’ camerman in the future. not lana because the legion said she will do great things in the future. Not lex or kara because they aren’t even on the show. That leaves chloe, oliver, and tess. Maybe even Martha but shes not on the show

  9. Keep something in mind folks:

This is a “reimagining” of the franchise. Maybe what happened in other movies doesn’t hold water now. Or how a character continued in the comics is going a different direction.

Look at Doomsday. He never had an later ego in the comic… and see what they’ve added to that character here.

    Food for thought!

  10. It will look better if Davis and Tess die because the other actors and actresses fit in the way they are in the movie.

  11. Keep THIS in mind.

The Smallville producers do NOT own most of these characters.

They can not just do with them what they will.

Warner Brothers would never let them permenantly kill off any of the main trademarked characters.

Clark, Lois, Jimmy, Doomsday, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Cyborg, AquaMan, Martian Manhunter, and Lex Luthor are safe from permanent death.

Virtually everyone else is in danger.

    Especially Chloe and Kara.

  12. Sigh.

  13. Yep… all characters owned by Warner Bros. are 100% safe.

    Trademarked characters = $$$$$$$.

    That’s how the world works.

    Sorry, fanboys.

    Deal.

  14. Yep. Heard a lot of great (and not so great) prognosticating here. It’s frustrating not seeing clark fly yet. However, that will be milked for as long as possible, although I believe it’s high time. I think it will be interesting to see how Clark decides on his costumed appearance. As for who lives and who dies, I’ll patiently wait and see. One question though, didn’t Clark wear glasses to help keep him indistinguishable from Superman?

  15. You know, even though I was joking, if Clark dies in one of these episodes, I bet you the next episode will have a record number of viewers to see how he comes back, lol.

  16. Joemama, why is Supergirl not safe from being killed off when Lois Lane (and Green Arrow?) are? You are correct, though, that WB will veto any plot development which they feel is disrespectful of the Superman mythos. Is it not possible, though, that Smallville’s producers could pitch Lois’ death (or Jimmy’s or whomever’s) to WB as an attention-grabbing (ie ratings-hiking) new direction for the iconic character — we’ve never seen Lois die in live-action before, and there is a reason comic writers do it all the time in Elseworlds. Killing off a character is not inherently disrespectful.

Also, keep in mind that Erica Durance’s contract is the only one to expire at the end of this season. As such, the producers would not have to pay her a dime if they chose not to bring her back for next season. On the other hand, Allison Mack is the only actor on the show aside from Tom Welling to have a 22-episode contract; all the others are part-timers. This means that her contract is the most expensive to buy out. Hey, you want to talk money? Fine, let’s talk money.

  17. Clark and Doomsday could both die as the famous Superman vs. Doomsday fight in the comics had the two fight to the death. If this happens, Chloe may use her meteor power to bring Clark back to life, in turn killing herself.

My other thoughts of characters that may die are; Tess and Oliver.

  18. Most of you are wrong. DC Comics owns the trademark not Warner Brothers. All the different interpretations lead to some categories. DC Comics makes the final decisions. DC had a lot of problems with even allowing Supergirl to return and when it finally happened it was coordinated with the comics. You will notice that Zod’s wife was called Faora not Ursa in this most recent interpretation by Smallville. This is a original Phamtom Zone criminal name going back decades. The same with the Legion, you might have found the episode lame but it was loyal to the original interpetation of the Legion which has Superman set on a huge pedistal. The two who are to die, who knows; the original comics had both Jonathan and Martha Kent dying just after Clark had graduated from High School. The original series had Jonathan Kent dying but not Martha while the movie showed Martha Kent surviving many years after the death of ther husband. In Lois and Clark, both survived to the Superman years, which was later adopted ina reboot of the comics. The door is wide open; I look for someone unexpected. Most likely is Pete Ross (although in the comics he lives to a ripe old age) and Chloe Sullivan. Doomsday is unkillable (thats the point) as a character although Davis may go as an alter ego.

  19. Trent,
I think you may have had it right the first time. I think we are all trying to think who they will kill off the season finale and none of us have considered that Clark would die. Smallville hasn’t followed the Superman mythology to this point so why start now? I think Clark will die in a battle and somehow still manage to vanish doomsday. I think either Chloe or Jor-el will have a hand in bringing Clark back and possibly he will start his training in the fortress at that point….and who knows maybe next season will have him as superman….but maybe without the costume yet……

  20. I think that certain charcters are protected to an extent by DC and smallville i feel would only kill of one of the iconic characters if they got the nod from DC to do so.

However regardless of wether lois is safe or not i think killing off her character would be huge mistake as not only would they potentially loose literally undreds of thousands of viwers they would also succeed in insulting and hacking off most superman fans out there.Another thing is that one of the best trhings about the show this last season has been the chemistry and fun between lois and clark(erica and tom who play off each other beautifully) so again if they kill lois that takes away another huge asset of the show. Finally it would be a real kick in the teeth and insult to lois lane fans to have her feature in only a handful of episodes in last half of series then bring her back for few minutes in final episode just to kill her off.

To be perfectly honest i think show will suffer dramatically if they kill either chloe or lois so i hope allison mack is staying put too, there is room enough for her and lois and they both bring a lot to the show so i say smallville make sure you keep trhem both onboard for season 9.

  21. I agree….I don’t think Lois will go….I mean they can’t veer off too much from the superman story we all know….but unfortunately Chloe has never been in any of the comics and I am not sure if her character is safe…..But they always leave us on a cliffhanger for the finale….so maybe we will think Chloe is dead and then come back again? never know…..

  22. What ever happens, all fans are in for a kick ass finale!

  23. The Smallville showrunners have teased Chloe’s death since season three — remember when she and her dad walked into that safehouse, the door closed behind them, and then the house exploded? She was fine. I’ll believe Chloe’s dead when I see the bo– wait, she actually died twice on the show, complete with dead body! I guess I mean I’ll believe it when the PTB officially confirm it.

I don’t expect them to kill off Lois or Chloe. Both characters have too many fans to risk alienating, if Lois is gone they will actually have to think up original, compelling storylines (instead of just having Welling and Durance make googly eyes at each other), and if Chloe dies who will the writers be able to use for plot exposition?

I believe Jimmy is the one to die; he’s the character most peripheral to the action this year, he has the fewest fans, and they just gave him a drug addiction which, if he survives into season 9, they’ll actually have to address. If Smallville has taught us anything over the years, it’s that this show loves taking the easy way out.

  24. I just read that the writers will be following the DC mythology with respect to doomsday….This means Clark will probably die in the big battle in the finale and then come back next year. They also said there will be a metaphorical death. I believe they mean Clark’s personal life outside of being superman/red-blue blur will be dead as he will have to completely accept his role as a hero and a dual identity. He will no longer have his Clark Kent persona, but Clark Kent/Superman…and become the bumbling/corny Clark kent we all know. Give me your thoughts…you can read the interview I’m referencing from a link on kryptonsite…..

  25. I am glad the writing has changed hands and knowing that they will be moving more toward the Superman we all grew up kowing and loving. As for the flying…I keep waiting to see that happen. I think they will kill off Chloe and Davis and Clark will be fill with sooo much sorrow and anger that he will just burst into the sky and start flying. That would be awsome!!

  26. Doomsday cant die! its only the first season with him in the show and also clark kent isnt superman yet he needs his cape first i think the phantom zone will come in play for a season or two b4 doomsday gets let out by lex luther! read the comics!!!! chole needs to go! sorry to say shes played very well and will be well missed! lois and clark need to get closer and tess cant stay cuz she knows to much about everyone! well soon see!!!!

  27. cloe is well hot she defo shudnt get killed off, just because she isnt in the films doesnt mean she has to die she could move away or watever like lana did!!

  28. Just saw Injustice – great build up to next week, can’t wait.

After watching the Doomsday trailer, I have a funny feeling the funeral is Clarks. The legion guy says ‘tomorrow you will die’ and the funeral maybe shows what will happen if Clark fails?

I’m by no means suggesting it’s the end for Clark, but it may just be the cliffhanger for us all.

Whatever happens, we won’t know the conclusion until series 9 episode 1 anyway!

    Can’t wait…

As for other character deaths my bets are:
    - 100% not Jimmy
    - 100% not Lois
    - 85% not Chloe

So that leaves Davis Bloom, Tess Mercer, Pete Ross, Martha Kent, Lana Lang (Doomsday could kill her once and for all!), Oliver or a Justice Leaguer.

    Most likely Davis & Tess.

  29. The Justice Leaguer isn’t a bad idea.

When Doomsday came on the scene in the comic, he did kill a superhero from one of the super-groups. Age prevents me from remembering which one… urg… arg.

Though I wouldn’t mind seeing Tess croak, I think they’d keep her around because she’s the stand in Lex… but I have no clue.
