‘Skyfall’ Video Blog: Sam Mendes Discusses His James Bond Vision

While James Bond fans patiently await the release of an official trailer for this year’s 23rd installment in the iconic secret agent franchise (titled Skyfall), they have a new behind-the-scenes video blog to both help pass the time and tease actor Daniel Craig’s third lap around as the new iteration of 007.

Skyfall‘s Oscar-winning helmer Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) is the focus of this clip, which is mostly composed of an interview with the filmmaker expressing his interest in and longtime adoration of the Bond series – along with brief glimpses of scenes from the actual movie – including, the sequence where Bond infiltrates Shanghai, as teased in the first official Skyfall still.

Have a look at what may be the first of several Skyfall video blogs to come:

This Skyfall production clip is somewhat underwhelming when compared to the highly informative production diary videos that Peter Jackson has been posting for The Hobbit. Not that it matters, seeing how anticipation for the new Bond adventure is already sky-high (no pun) thanks in part to the extended delay between installments resulting from MGM’s bankruptcy drama.

If there’s anything especially interesting to note from this video, it’s Mendes’ comment about fashioning Skyfall as “a big fabulous escapist movie” that still reflects thoughtfully about the contemporary world. Mendes’ involvement with the film has long prompted rumors about Skyfall being an “artsy” Bond flick that tones down the action set pieces, but the filmmaker makes it pretty apparent here: that’s not actually the plan.

As for all those Skyfall mysteries about Ralph Fiennes’ character, how Naomie Harrris as Agent Eve fits into the storyline, and just who the villain being played by Oscar-winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) is? Well, it looks like it’s best to not expect much more official insight into those matters until the actual film is released.

Skyfall will hit theaters in the U.S. on November 9th, 2012.

  1. I was in the background for some of those London shot scenes! I need to see a trailer very soon, need some reassurances that this might actually be good!

  2. I just hope the camera work and editing is better then Quantum. Enough of this Bourne copy cat.

    • I’d also like the story, acting, script, directing, effects and casting to better than Quantum.

      • I think all are a safe bet. Trailer may be while in coming…
Dr. Sam, have some faith in Sam Mendes. Did you like American Beauty?

        • Yes, it’s one of my favourite movies, I love it. But it hardly convinces me that he was the right choice for directing a Bond movie. Mendes is a greta director no doubt but doing heavy action, I’m not convinced.

As fot the trailer, there’s bound to be a teaser in a few months if its out in October…

  3. Everything should be much better than quantum :D
And it might even be better than casino royale. I love casino, but the action toned down a bit in the second half. Hopefully this can be a compelling film and action packed throughout.

  4. If daniel graig does an fourth film I like to see mgm studios hire Christopher nolan for an fourth 007 outing, Bond + Nolan = egual just awesomeness, but theres that rumor that chris nolan plans on dusting off an script about Howard hughes, base off the book Citizen hughes, its about howard in his 40s all the way up to his death, so maybe daniel could make an good howard hughes if not i like to see johnny depp in the role, I would be something very dark and twisted, as much as the book is.

  5. Sam Mendes seemed out of his depth talking like child about Bond. Casino Royale is way over rated even if it were not I would go with Goldfinger as my example of what Bond can be. Evey time Daniel Craig or somebody close to production talk about Bond they go on and on about Casino Royale, there are 21 other Bond movies. Casino Royale is where they decided to join the Bourne clone action heroes league, Qunatum of Solace is the ultimate Bourne action follow up, Skyfall needs not to be too over thought. More Goldeneye and Living Daylights and less Die Another Day and Casino Royale

    • Exactly! And there’s no denying that Casino Royale is good, there are many Bond’s that are a lot better.
      In fact I might make a list of all the Bond movies that are better than Casino Royale and would serve as a better example;

      From Russia With Love
      On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
      Live And Let Die
The Man With The Golden Gun
      For Your Eyes Only
      The Living Daylights
      License To Kill
      Tomorrow Never Dies

Those are proper Bond movies, not this rehashed Bourne nonsense with the thug in the suit.

  6. Do not expect much. Mendes is not an action film director and Cr-egg is not James Bond. It’s time for sanity to rule at Eon and hire Henry Cavill after this turkey flops once Twilight premieres a week later to bury it at the box office.

    • Craig is bond

    • Cavill? Sorry no, he’s a terrible actor.

  7. Short and sweet, two words for ya: Skyfall stunk!
