Lady Gaga as La Chameleon in Machete Kills Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Will Feature a Cameo by Lady Gaga

When a performer has as much theatricality as pop titan Lady Gaga, it’s almost inevitable that a movie career will be on the cards. So it is that Gaga has a starring role in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming start-studded sequel Machete Kills – an over-the-top tribute to ’70s exploitation movies that also features Charlie Sheen as the President of the United States and Danny Trejo as the titular killing machine.

Glimpses of Gaga’s acting skills have so far been limited to performances in her music videos, which are often elaborate and downright bizarre, and there are plenty of reasons to be wary of a major pop star trying to make it as an actor. For starters, there’s a good chance that they’ll have been cast based on star power rather than pulling off a great audition, and for every Will Smith or Tom Waits there’s been a Kelly Clarkson or a Vanilla Ice.

However, for those who might be feeling trepidatious about Gaga’s role in Machete Kills, Joseph Gordon-Levitt offered reassurances along with the surprise revelation that the singer will be appearing in another Rodriguez sequel – Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. In an interview with JAMN 94.5, Gordon-Levitt said that he’d had his own reservations about Gaga, but had been pleasantly surprised:

“She’s a great actress. And I didn’t know that. You know she came in and I was like, ‘Okay, sure, they’re having a huge pop star do a scene in the movie, I understand,’ but then she came in and like, nailed it! She had her character down, and she was like a total pro and did a great job. I was really impressed.”

Since Gaga is only in one scene, this sounds like a cameo appearance rather than a full role, but it certainly gives the impression that Rodriguez was happy with Gaga’s work in Machete Kills. Gordon-Levitt didn’t reveal which character she’ll be playing, but chances are it will most likely be a stripper or a prostitute. Possibly with a gun.

Gaga was featured briefly in the most recent trailer for Machete Kills as Lady Chameleón – a mistress of disguise who pulls off a very convincing Cuba Gooding Jr. mask to reveal her true form. Lady Chameleón is part of a gang of infamous super-soldiers and assassins led by Luther Voz (Mel Gibson), who Machete must defeat before a missile is launched at Washington D.C. and… well, the plot doesn’t matter nearly as much as the creative kills using speedboats.

Do you believe that Lady Gaga is on the edge of a glorious acting career, or will she just be telephoning it in with these roles? Share your thoughts (and puns, if you think you can beat those) in the comments.

  1. Just what we all needed

  2. That’s enough for me to say I’m no longer interested. The development hell was bad enough, but this cheap ploy takes things a bit too far for my liking.

    • Come on. If He hired a certain terrible actress for The first movie and still make it awesome, You should give this one a chance too.

  3. I never really minded a lot of pop stars but there’s a couple these days that I wish would just fall off the face of the planet and Lady Gaga is one of them. When I heard Rihanna was cast in a movie, I fully just ignored the film entirely. It was clear Rihanna wasn’t in it for the acting itself and may have been clueless about the line of work. My guess is, she was in just for the stardom and that must be a slap in the face for any serious actor.

Judging by Joseph Levitt’s comments, it seems he had the same mindset as me about pop stars in movies but he was surprised by Lady Gaga so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. Plus she’s only a cameo so I can deal.

    • She studied theatre too before becoming a singer. That must be why I guess

  4. “Lady Gag-Gag!”

  5. She’s awesome. That is all.

  6. Well, that cheap ploy just took me out of the theater, but perhaps I’ll still see it on DVD when released…unless Miley Cyrus is going to be offered a cameo as well.

  7. This can’t be too bad. I’m still very interested in this movie. The first Sin City was amazing. I have no doubt the next one will be just as good, regardless of all the problems it’s been having.

  8. well given all those skimpy outfits, one would think Lady Gaga would be right at home in Sin City.

  9. p-p-p-poker face.

  10. Why won’t she just go away?

  11. Always thought Lady Gaga would be perfect for a Videodrome remake, (or even ,if H’wood felt like it for some strange reason, Desperately Seeking Susan) but hey, I’ll take the long overdue Sin City sequel anytime.

  12. Damn. That sucks. Awful. Totally killing my happiness for those two movies

  13. I wonder how bad real actors must despise it when talentless pop stars get roles in movies just because. It offends me just as an observer. I feel we deserve better.

    • There are many negative stigmas people can slap on Lady Gaga, but talentless is not one of them…

      • “Tasteless”, then.

      • Aside from flamboyant vulgarity, what exactly is her “talent”?

        • Popularity has not much to do with talent these day’s. Marketing has a much bigger influence.
Lady Gaga maybe will surprise in a positive way.
but that she is giving this chance in the first place has more to do her popularity with teens than anything else…

          • This is an “R” rated movie, her popularity with terns is irrelevant.

            • *teens

  14. I don’t know where all this negativity towards Lady GaGa is coming from it’s just a cameo everyone is acting as if she will be in the film from start to finish. Anyway, I think the picture above just cheapens the appearance of Lady GaGa in the movie it just doesn’t do her any justice but a cheap gimmick to get her fans to flock to the theatres. I’m sure she will do good otherwise since she is being type casted.

    • Her whole career is a cheap gimmick

      • That ^

  15. Please don’t ruin my most anticipated sequel of the decade! Ugh! Piss off, you eccentric weirdo!

    • ok no. Stop. Ive been assuming that you guys have been hating on her because maybe it’s not your type of music. But comments like this is making me think otherwise and let me tell you something. There is nothing… nothing… NOTHING wrong with being a eccentric weirdo! If we didnt have weirdo’s there would be no one to think outside the box. If we didnt have any one to think outside the box society wouldn’t be as it is today. If society wasnt as it is today, there would be no video games, no movies, no art, No love, no hate. If we didn’t have weirdo’s every one would be the same with the same ideas and that is not exactly a good thing!

      • Wearing a dress of meat is NOT art or thinking outside of the box! It’s all to get attention. Work hard and you won’t need stupid gimmicks. She wanted her Madonna moment and she thinks she got it, but she just ended up looking like a fool instead.
People now days think that you have to have shock value in everything you do…Ummmm Adele’s little shelf full of Grammy’s would beg to differ.

        • I didnt say every thing needs shock value but at least she knows what she’s trying to do unlike some one at the VMA’s who has daddy issues. and Adele is awesome. I wouldn’t want anything changed about her.

My point is. Yes. Lady gaga is a eccentric weirdo. And there is nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is the vash amount people out there who think they need to copy the same formula to get fans. Not even give a reason behind what they do or wear. Hey. At least some of gaga’s gimmicks have meaning behind them. Like when she preformed paparazzi on stage then pretended to get killed. Or breaking out of a egg singing about how she “was born this way.” So saying she doesn’t think outside the box is false.

          • She’s less eccentric and more a money hound. With her, it’s all about getting attention through marketing.

        • Great. Now people might think im a gaga fan boy for trying tell you that you should come up with another word to use as insult instead of “eccentric weirdo.”

  16. She’s hot

  17. She’s a skank

  18. Lady Ga Ga seriously? Can’t somebody other than that no talent hack, Rodriguez, produce Sin City 2???

  19. Someone explain to me why so many people hate Katy Perry, but are in love with a circus freak like Lady Ga Ga?

  20. She did a great job in Machete Kills! She is well known for extended music videos with a good portion of acting. I guess if you dismiss the movie because she is in a scene you’ll just miss out. Oh well.

  21. Wow!! She is brilliant in concert and you can see that Gaga is a natural for films. Looks like she’s on her way. I still don’t get why people like to knock her down. I’m positive that all the naysayers have not seen any of her shows.
