The long wait is over, Sin City fans. The sequel to Robert Rodriguez’ adaptation of acclaimed comic book creator Frank Miller’s dark noir tales is going into production under the official title of A Dame to Kill For.

The news was confirmed by Dimension Films, which sent out an official press release that you can read below.

Filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, along with producer Alexander Rodnyansky, have announced that production will commence on the highly anticipated sequel to 2005’s Sin City, entitled Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

“The first question I am always asked is “When will you make another Sin City? ,” said Rodriquez. “I have wanted to re-team with Frank Miller and return to the world he created since the day we wrapped the original, but have felt a duty to the fans to wait until we had something truly exceptional that would meet and exceed what have become epic expectations. A Dame To Kill For will certainly be worth the wait.”

Sin City creator, screenwriter and co-director Frank Miller said, “The first Sin City knocked out audiences who had never seen anything like it before. Robert Rodriguez and I are going to shake things up and deliver a ferocious film experience that is going to go even further than the first.”

The script and details of the film’s story have been kept tightly under wraps. Casting will begin next week, with many of the original cast expected to return. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Frank Miller and Academy Award-winner William Monahan (The Departed). The film is expected to begin production this summer at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

The original Sin City was brought to the screen by Rodriguez and Miller and released by Dimension in 2005, and proved to be a landmark step forward in filmmaking, breaking ground with immersive green screen to create its iconic stylish look. The first film, released on April 1, 2005, grossed over $160 million (US) worldwide and is a consistently strong home video and television performer.

The “A Dame to Kill For” graphic novel is a tale of love, betrayal and murder that features the characters Dwight (played by Clive Owen in the Sin City movie), Gail (who was played by Rosario Dawson), Miho (Devon Aoki), Manute (Michael Clarke Duncan), Nancy (Jessica Alba) and Marv (Mickey Rourke). In the Sin City chronology it is the prequel to “The Big Fat Kill” (which was Owen’s portion of the Sin City movie); it also shares connective tissue with “The Hard Goodbye” (Mickey Rourke’s portion of the Sin City movie). One would expect Owen and Rourke to return; then again, in the comic, Dwight starts out having a different face than the post-surgery version we saw in the first movie – so in fact it would be possible to have both Owen and another actor sharing the role in the sequel film.

There’s an obvious advantage to telling this particular tale, in that it would allow for many of the original cast to return for the sequel, while also injecting some new blood (no pun). Over the years, big name actresses – Selma Hayek, Angelina Jolie – have been rumored for the part of “Ava,” the femme fatale who is the titular “Dame to Kill For,” but no confirmations yet on who will land the role. Frank Miller has reportedly worked on new and connecting stories for the sequel, which would suggest it has somewhat of the same piecemeal structure as its predecessor.

All in all, this is welcome (and overdue) news for Sin City fans, but with the cast and creators all coming back, it should be winner.

We’ll keep you updated on the status of Sin City 2.

  3. This is the news I have been waiting almost 8 years for! About time!

  4. This news is way overdue! You made my day Kofi!

  5. Finally!!

  6. Aww no. I was hoping for another Spy Kids movie…Seriously though, it’s about damn time this film was made.
I might be in the minority here, but I was looking forward to eventually seeing a Predators sequel. I enjoyed that film, and was under the impression that it was critically and financially successful.

    • Didn’t he say he would approach a Predators sequel after Sin City 2? Actually I think I heard it from you Voodoo. Anyway I’m in agreeance, except Spy kids, lol.

  7. I wouldn’t hold my breath for Rourke to return, that guy is such a Diva. Glad the are finally getting the ball rolling on this!

  8. Selma Hayek please

    • second that. a scene with a giant snake & stripper pole wld also be welcomed.

  9. The wait is over… fnally

  10. check this out my blog soon

  11. I hope Marv is in whatever story they put together. He was the best part of the first one.

  12. If the the sub title is ‘A Dame to Kill For’ then there is no question Marv WILL be involved. I hope Selma Hayek plays Ava because she’s willing to go the nude route for films, the role of Ava would HAVE to call for nudity. Jolie might be too “big” to play a character like that.
I wonder if they’ll cast someone else to play Shelly or cut the character out completely.
I can’t wait for this. Sin City 1 is AMAZING!
