I think it'll be a huge hit, but that the ratings will be good but not great.

come next year and towards the beginning of the summer season there will be in unbelievable marketing campaign for this flick and because of it, tons of buzz. JJ will make the trailers for this film mind blowing so itll draw alot of the mainstream....at least I hope...I want thish to be a big success, Star Trek sure as heck needs it and what a good time for it since Star Wars is getting worse day-by-day

For me, STAR TREK is the biggest question-mark of next summer's blockbuster tentpoles.

My personal opinion is it's either going to be a huge hit or a huge flop - not some middle of the ground "meh" money-maker (i.e. SUPERMAN RETURNS)

But considering the H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E buzz on WOLVERINE (i.e. my gut feeling is it will ultimately kill the X-MEN film franchise - what's left of it), Paramount might have been wise to put the TREK reboot/prequel out a week later.

We shall see...

Actually I'd be a little concerned that Smith liked it.

He tends to like stuff that is dialogue and character study driven rather than plot driven.

If you look at most of his movies it's just people talking and there is little to no actual story.

I want a movie with an actual story and some action not just talking heads.

@Ken J

LOL, you know that is one reason I will ALWAYS prefer Kirk over Picard. Kirk was an old school, take no prisoners, "make my day" kind of guy balanced by common sense and compassion.

Picard embodied the era in which TNG was created: Rule by committee, bend over backwards to a ridiculous point in conflicts and worrying about how everyone felt.

I just hope that it sticks to the original Star Trek and not the p&%syfied hippy "set our phasers to stun" BS of the shows after that...

If I was a squad-leader or teamleader in that universe, my order would have been "set your phasers to annihilate"

I apologize to all here, as soon as I said 'stupid' I knew it was wrong and unfair, and definately too harsh.

Everyone quotes other review grades, even I. In this case, I meant that reviewed ratings on niche films often aren't that applicable. For Kevin Smith, the fans of his films will give a movie like mallrats a perfect score, same wit Jay and Silent Bob. But to your average movie-goer and adult who don't understand his work or characters, they may despise it.

In any case, I am a movie geek for sure, and I really like to hear what he has to say, because he's a pretty down-to-earth dude and know's what he is and is not capable of. I dunno about you all, but hearing him praise Watchmen and Trek is a huge thing for me personally going into the film schedule next year.

I've heard alot about Star Trek 11, I sure hope the film isn't a montage of flashbacks. (That's one of my fears).
The montage works in South Park but not on Star Trek.
^
Smith is a A'ok by me, but its not like he's gonna see the new Star Trek movie (in advance), and say it was ok,,,
Abrams would (have his PA) beat the crap out of him in some alley in Pasadena.
From what I know the vfx arnt complete yet, so he prob saw a rough cut.
^
Big fan of some of Kevin's film's Dogma, Cleck's... He has a funny part in "Comic Book the Movie" where he spoofs himself and actually talks to Mark Hamill about writing a script about a superhero that fights a giant spider at the end of the film. (Fans of Smith will get that inside joke.) 8-)

I think we see Kevin in his natural enviroment in Die Hard 4. I've heard that the set dress guys got most of that "stuff" frm Kevin himself...
:-)
Anyway, I'm just rambling at this point. :-)

Smith doesn't have to be a great director, writer, etc. to review (or state an opinion about) a movie. how many of us on here have ever made a nationally-released movie or published a comic? and yet we state opinions and reviews all the time.

All I have to say is... he's seen Star Trek and Watchmen??? I am incredibly jealous

All opinions of Mr. Smith and his opinions aside, I think that paramount is actually exercising thier right to gain interest by way of mass curiosity instead of going the viral rout rgarding this film. Let's face it guys, before the interweb gave us an opportunity to go sniffing about for any morsels we could dig up regarding upcoming big budget/ concept films, we were content to get our snippets of info from sci-fi and film mags to satisfy us till the films were released. Times change, and the onus on the studios to either promote or protect information regarding tentpole movies is likely a collaboration of using the web to tease us, overwhelm us with "money shots", or leave us to our own, impatient little imaginations.

I, for one, am kinda diggin' the mystery thus far and can't wait to see this flick!

Peace, ya'll

The use of the word "stupid" is pretty strong. Rotten Tomatoes is a well known aggregator of reviews from both "elite" and other reviewers around the 'net and is a good gauge of whether generally speaking a movie is good or not.

Although it might have been more relevant to list the average rating instead of the percent positive/negative.

As to Kevin Smith: He's a well known personality with a history in the comic book industry whose tastes in sci-fi and superheroes generally represent fans of those genres. He's too crass for my taste (I *hated* "Clerks 2") but I get where he's coming from.

so i dont get what ppl are arguing here. No one is saying Kevin Smith is Spielberg, he says that about himself.

What we can say is that he has a large and loyal fanbase and is quite an icon in the comic and movie geek community. No one can dispute that so what is everyone talking about, lol

posting a bunch of arbitary ratings from a site is a pretty stupid thing to do.

The clerks movies, and for the most part, all of Kevin Smith movies are niche market films with a built in fanbase.

and 790...ya the idea is to make Trek mainstream, so everyone will enjoy it. The harcore fans are the ones that are worried about having new actors play iconic characters. Kevin Smith says its done perfectly so the hardcore fans can relax.

No problem, man...

Not to take anything from anyone else, or to ruffle feathers...but this IS an opinion board, and as such, people are free to say (almost) anything they want about the topic at hand.

The rules are also clear. Right above the comment box has a little sentence outlining the rules: "No profanity or personal attacks." Everyone on these boards, and everyone who reads these articles/visits these sites is all there for the same reason. We love movies, or SciFi, or comics, or whatever...and as a member of such a community, there is no place for such attitude. If you don't like something, say it "out loud," but keep in mind others might not feel the same way. Be prepared to defend why you don't like something, or view something differently...

These comment sections are great for such discussions...but personal attacks detract from the discussion topic...and eventually you end up with dozens of posts that have nothing to do with the subject at hand (or in this case...just a few, mine included).

Okay...to interject some Kevin Smith stuff (and hopefully get this back on track)...I actually own all of his stuff on DVD, and his book...so I am most definitely a fan (even Jersey Girl...but hey, I'm from Jersey myself...it's almost a state law...well...almost...).

I also appreciate him because of his...almost "Geek-Cinderella" story. He was a comic-book nerd who worked in a convenience store attached to a video store (the very same ones in Clerks)...who made a movie with his friends, "loosely" based on his life, and his experiences. He racked up tons of Credit Card debt, and in the end, the movie became such a cult classic that they now show that movie "drive-in" (sit-in) style in the lots adjacent to the store...and unfortunately have to turn people away because of how popular it is. His ties to NJ are still so strong that most of his "special events" (i.e. B-Day "Prom" party, Poker tournies, and movie showings) still take place in/near his hometown (in his own comic-book store, no less).

I can understand why people don't like him, however, and I have no problem with that...because it could lead to some interesting discussions...all of which I am looking forward to reading.

Till then.

daviedave,
Good post, definitely more fair to Kevin Smith than mine. Thanks for taking the time to answer my orignal question as to why he is one of the gods in the geek community. Also, thank you for not flaming me and just presenting a different opinion.
