‘Paul Blart’ Director Helming Short Circuit Remake

Early this summer, we announced that Dimension Films was in the process of giving Johnny 5 a remake-over with a new Short Circuit film. They just about had all of the pre-production people in place to make it happen; all they needed was a director. Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny) was putting together the script; David Foster, who produced the original, was returning to produce the remake and joining him were Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde. So where did Dimension Films go to find a director? Where everyone else goes when they need to find something, of course – the mall.
Steve Carr, who directed 2009 surprise hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop, has been chosen to direct the Short Circuit remake and that just means one thing – a embarrassingly, unfunny actor will surely be cast as the male lead. What brings me to that conclusion? I’m glad you asked…
Taking a look back at Carr’s previous work we see that he has given the world such movie gems as: Next Friday (Ice Cube), Dr. Dolittle (Eddie Murphy), Daddy Day Care (Eddie Murphy again), Rebound (Martin Lawrence), Are We Done Yet? (Ice Cube again), and Paul Blart: Mall Cop (Kevin James).
Yeah, sure, Eddie Murphy is listed twice but we aren’t talking about Beverly Hills Cop or Raw Murphy; we’re talking about Haunted Mansion, Meet Dave, and Pluto Nash Murphy. I’m not too thrilled about the prospect of either an overweight white guy that is funny because he’s fat or an African-American rapper/comedian that is funny because he’s stereotypical playing the male lead. I’m not saying Carr will go in either direction during the casting phase, but so far his reputation precedes him.

Well, as long as they don’t mess with the original story, then the Short Circuit could turn out to be a fun throwback to 80s comedy. Here is what Variety is reporting the story will be about:
“Built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon, Johnny 5 develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. He befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family.”
Sigh. A lonely boy and his fractured family? Why must every family story in Hollywood include a messed up kid and their messed up family? Is everything written by Disney? (ZING!) Seriously, what was wrong with the original story? Man builds robot, robot gets conscience, robot meets girl, girl meets robot building guy and falls in love, robot rides off into the sunset. Done and Done! Carr still has time to salvage this potential train wreck if he will call Steve Guttenberg right now and offer him a great co-starring role.
What do you think about this announcement that Steve Carr is directing the new Short Circuit and what do you think the film’s potential could be?
Short Circuit is planning on a 2011 release.
Around the web:

But they already remade Short Curcuit. It was called Wall-E and it was awesome.
Now all my dreams have come true.
No wait… the other thing.
xigbar’s right, that was johnney 5…
Wall-e totally ripped off short circuit lol
I liked Paul Blart. It was a mindless, entertaining movie that gave me quite a few chuckles. Citizen Kane it was not, but to compare it to Pluto Nash and Meet Dave is hardly fair.
As long as they don’t have Seth Rogen in it, it’ll be good. I really don’t think they NEED to remake it, but I think that another Steve should have the lead role: Steve Carrell.
So in 2009, the military’s definition of a highly advanced weapon is Johnny 5?
This has to mean the robot’s getting a huge makeover, which could be disastrous. Plus, they’ll probably go the CG route instead of building an actual robot/puppet.
Wall-e wishes he could have been johnny 5… Johnny 5 was awesome. I could see this movie having some legal problems with hasbro in the future for using the transforming sounds that they use in transformers… It’ll serve to give is a chuckle later on when we read it here.
What I don’t like is that the thing’s going to befriend a little kid… neither Short Circuit movies had anything to do with kids. I fear it’d be dumbed down even more just to deal with that. I mean, I’m not exactly expecting a darker more realistic movie out of all of this, but Short circuit was technically a buddy movie of sorts. Gah!
But they already remade Short Curcuit. It was called Wall-E and it was crap.
@Josh Rose
“So in 2009, the military’s definition of a highly advanced weapon is Johnny 5?”
LOL! That is what I thought even in the 80s as a kid watching it. Why don’t you just attack that robot from behind with a rocket launcher. It can only go 9 Miles an hour!
I liked the movie all the same, but I am with you Josh, Johnny 5 will probably be redesigned and look more like Eve than Wall-e.
@ken j
What the heck are you talking about, Wall-E was brilliant!
@ken j
yes… What are you talking about? Can’t wall-e get some robot love… Lol yeah that don’t like that movie much either. These message movies in kids films… Next thing you know this johnny 5 is made out of recycable metal and sings over the rainbow.
@xigbar
What the heck are you talking about, Wall-E was crap!
@jago
lol, well, actually, recycled metal makes sense, metal is the one thing that is 100% recyclable without loss, either in mass or in strength. Recycled steel is the same as new steel, so why not? lol.
Anyway, besides the message garbage, the movie was pretty boring most of the way, and then them going back and forth between real people and cgi people was just weird, and the ending how everyone all of a sudden could run around and do stuff, duummmbbbb……
I love how everyones turning on Wall•E, at the same time Kenj seems to be sinking into a deep sense of real time blogger denial…
Lol,,,
I believe I’ve discovered a new form of medical illness brought on by online blogging. But at this point I’m waiting for the results from the lab,,,
It will however be called the “Kenj syndrome,,,”.
Awww, you’re always thinking about me, that’s so sweet!! and cute!!
Do you have a facebook? We can be buddies and you can make wannabe witty remarkes to all of my status updates, oh it will be so cute!
Nope don’t have facebook, Ken how else can we be together come on think of something ???
I DON’T KNOW!! THIS IS KILLING ME! haha, ok, I won’t scream you to death…
Dude, chill out. No need for sarcasm.
I really loved Wall-E. Visually stunning, and able to convey themes and emotions without the use of dialogue.
The way they used real people for the “Pre-extended state of lethargy” showed how the human body degraded from all that sitting around. I know people wouldn’t start looking like cartoon characters, but they would definitely get softer, their skin smoother, etc.
And I wouldn’t say people could “Run around and do stuff”
They could walk, but just barely.
Ken post what mental hospital your in and I’ll make every attempt I can to break you out!
It will be like the FOX show “Prison Break”
I will get myself committed at the same place your at. Then through a complex series of self inflicted tattoos I will break us both out. We might have to team up with a pedophile, mafia don, a drug dealer maybe others too, but well make it you an me !!!
Haha lol, and all that,,,
@790
Didn’t we establish that it was you not knowing how to read that caused that last confusion about the console? LOL, I wouldn’t want you to be the one helping me break… Oh wait, what did I just say? Oops!!
@xigbar
That doesn’t really explain anything, why wasn’the past humans just slimmer cgi people? How do they turn from real life to CGI by sitting around? And come on, how long is “waah-ee, eeveee” funny? I just thought it was pretty boring for the most part, and I’ve always disliked most of the message movies that comes out, especially those aimed at children, it’s like they are trying to indoctrinate them while they’re young or something. Like them singing praise songs toward a particular politician at the schools, that’s just unacceptable…
Were going to get you help kenj hang in there.
Damn it !!!!!!!!
@Ken J & 790
For the love of this movie website’s comment boards, just have sex already! I’m sick of this “will they won’t they” crap.
@Joshi
But it’s the tease that gets people to keep watching week after week. Come on, you should know this by now… *rolls eyes*
Lol yeah we should get the bass out or comments and make it a lil easier for vic. I still don’t like this being remade though. Hopefully “Willow” does not get remade as well or “The Sandlot” either. P. S… Or “Babes in Toyland” either.
Bass out of our comments*… i’m typing on a ipod sue me.
@ Ken
Sorry man, the executives have been breathing down our necks for weeks about the ratings for this comment board show. They feel the only way to get ratings back up again is to have you two finally hook up.
We also need to introduce a new character, kill off someone else, grab a special guest star and Vic needs to have a baby.
There was also something about Paul Young jumping over a bear pit on a skateboard, but I’m not sure if we’ll be able to fit that into this season.
@joshi
you could put that in the extras when the season dvd comes out.
P.s or “Hanging with the Homeboys” which is one of my favorites to not get remade, rebooted etc…
Nah, we’ll likely stick it in the “790 Hats Ken J” spin off show.
“790 Hates Ken J”
I’m typing with a cold… so sue me.
Tip for tap joshi… Tip for Tap (didn’t say it the other way just in case it got caught in the spam filter thing). Anyways off to bed for i too have a cold and things to do tommorrow.
