SHIELD Movie After The Avengers?

After the success of Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson was picked up for a major 9-picture contract with Marvel Studios to play parts in almost all of their in-development films over the next few years. And that came from only a small appearance after the credits of the first movie which led to a full supporting character role in Iron Man 2.

As far we know, Sam L’s character Nick Fury will not appear in Thor but he will play an important role in The First Avenger: Captain America and the following summer, in The Avengers. But what comes next for Samuel L. Jackson and Nick Fury after that? According to him, the S.H.I.E.L.D. movie that some have mentioned may become a reality shortly after The Avengers.

Speculation has often pointed toward the character of Nick Fury getting his own solo film and this might be the closest we get to that in the form of  a movie based on his organization, S.H.I.E.L.D.. Speaking to Big Boy Radio, Sam seemingly confirms that a SHIELD movie is in the works.

“The Avengers should start shooting some time next year, and then some time after that there’ll be a big S.H.I.E.L.D. movie.”

It’s already been revealed by Samuel L. Jackson and Thor star Chris Hemsworth that The Avengers begins shooting early next year, likely in February. As for what comes next after that, we’ve yet to hear official confirmation from Marvel Studios as to which of their in-development projects will get officially scheduled release dates.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear at this summer’s International Comic-Con about their next tentpole movies that will come after The Avengers. We can already expect an Ant-Man movie and Iron Man 3, and there’s been frequent reports indicating that there’s interest in introducing more obscure characters for their own movies, including Luke Cage who we reported on last week as a movie Marvel is already talking to an actor for. Other common characters brought up in interviews include Black Panther, Iron Fist and Dr. Strange.

What could the S.H.I.E.L.D. movie be about? I don’t know which stories they may pick up on for a movie that takes place (presumably) after The Avengers in the Marvel movie timeline, but I do expect to see some SHIELD agents, including Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and hopefully others including Hawkeye. And we can’t forget about Agent Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, who we already know will be helping recruit Thor into The Avengers initiative.

What would you like to see from  a S.H.I.E.L.D. feature film?

  1. “What would you like to see from a S.H.I.E.L.D. feature film?”

Samuel L Jackson playing anyone other than Samuael L Jackson?

I love the guy, he’s a badass, but lately, all I’ve seen him to is play variations on himself, which is all well and good, but I wasn’t a huge fan of his Nick Fury in Iron Man 2… it was literally Sam Jackson with an eye patch.

    • Shaft 2 ;)

    • I agree completely. Even the greatest actors in the world I don’t want to see in every friggin’ thing on screen… Ive been feeling that way about Liam Neeson since 2001.

      • agreed. great batman begins and def okay in A-Team, but screw taken and unknown and clash of the titans and all that crap. ugh.

    • I said that exact same thing about Sam Jackson with an eye patch to my girlfriend after the movie. She said he was reminding her of his character in the Spirit. I think David Hasslehoff was more convincing as Nick Fury and he is a horrible actor and nowhere near the bad ass-i-ness of Sam Jackson…of course, I only watched about 10 minutes of that movie.

  2. it would be cool if the movie was action packed and rated MA :D
im not expecting much from a nick fury movie, never really liked the character.

on a side note, i think michael jai white would be the best candidate for luke cage.. anyone who’s watched blood and bone would agree with me.

  3. Interesting to hear this is happening, as I think I remember that being speculated about on here after Iron Man 2. Whether this movie does well will probably depend a lot on how they project SHIELD, and if The Avengers creates just enough of an allure towards the organization. That, and tastefully including Banner, Stark, Thor, and Cap would help. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one of Marvel’s lower budget films since it’s sort of background.

  4. I think this is a good idea. Expanding the field of the Marvel Movie Universe. Baron Zemo or Hydra I think would make a sufficient antagonist.

  5. SHIELD TAKING ON HYDRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • ..if HYDRA shows up, bring on Iron Fist! :D

      • And if Hydra and Ironfist show up, then bring out Bob,Ageny of Hydra for Deadpool and Ironfist for Heroes For Hire.

        • and if hydra and iron fist and bob and deadpool and heroes for hire all show up, bring out daffy duck!

plus, deadpool is under ownership of fox. :/ too effing bad.

    • or Mothra

  6. I like Michael J. White but no other actor is close enough to actually personify a great Luke Cage more than Idris Elba. Marvel has already worked with him and are confident in his talent. So no to Terry Crews,MJW,or Tyrese. As far as a S.H.I.E.L.D movie, either “Hydra”,”A.I.M”, or “S.W.O.R.D.” as antagonists. Also they absolutely have to throw “M.O.D.O.K” into the mix. We can expect to see two future Avengers also who begin as S.H.I.E.L.D agents first,Carol Danvers and Jessica Drew.

  7. The origin of Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D,Jessica Drew’s ties to Hydra also need to be in it.

  8. It should be a prequel to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).

SHIELD vs AIM, with the need to create the Avengers Initiative and a lead-in to SHIELD vs HYDRA. And then do a SHIELD 2 after the Avengers pulling in select members of the Avengers and recruiting other Marvel characters to fight HYDRA.

    Just my opinion…

    • P.S.

The SHIELD movie should be very James Bond like, not Daniel Craig Bond, but Pierce Brosnan Bond.

      • I like the Daniel Craig Bond, but I get where your coming from.

    • @The real Joe, I like that idea. I think with Jessica Drew, it’d be cool to see a little bit of her origin as a Hydra operative under mind control and slowing breaking out of it little by little then finally comes to full consciousness from her brainwashing from Hydra and eventually joins S.H.I.E.L.D.

    • Agreed.

  9. I just can’t figure out why Nick Fury wouldn’t have a cameo in Thor? Why agent Coulson? I mean he’s a cool character and all… but they signed Samuel L. up for 9 films?!?!? Use him!!

    • The character picked up popularity, they want to use him for more prominent roles, not just cameos.

  10. If they have something in the film like the battle at the start of the marvel game, Ultimate Alliance, then it could probably be a pretty awesome action movie. I say make the SHIELD movie a mix between james bond and Metal Gear Solid, the game.

    • I’d be happy if the Helicarrier made an appearance.

      • I´m not quite sure, but I think you can get a little glimpse of the Triskelion in the Hulk movie. When they show New York from above, there´s a small island next to Liberty Island… But again, I´m not sure…

    • Yeah, It’d be cool then we could have S.H.I.E.L.D have a supernatural division’s team. SHIELD agents who have special semi-supernatural or psychic abilities like TELEKINESIS & TELEPATHY,and REMOTE VIEWING nothing too over the top but sort of special agents with special abilities beyond they’re physical training.

  11. Maybe Arnim Zola could be a villain in the SHIELD film?

  12. what i would like to see is-breath taking, never before seen action in 2 hour leist

  13. I want to see all of the underated heroes who are apart of SHIELD and hopefully there will be a lot of action and humor.

  14. Bad guys: Baron Strucker/HYDRA

    * Sam Wilson

    *Sharon Carter

    * Jim Woo

Cameo by William Hurt as General Ross.
Cameo by Eric Dane as…no, second thought, we can’t get away with that….

  15. Wow I was thinking pretty simple like they could show the genesis of the organization, carry the story forward about how and why S.H.I.E.L.D. is important in the context of the Marvel universe today. But so many of you are really calling for a complex story I feel kind of embarrassed for having such small aspirations for the film. I have to admit it all sounds very very interesting and would definitely be in the seat to check out a story that covered Carol Danvers, Jessica Drew, and HYDRA.

I wonder how they would do Jessica Drew given the character’s complicated comic background? Perhaps big Stan has those answers. Marvel might be thinking about producing a modest movie but the fans certainly will stagger them with such blockbuster aspirations…

  16. Whens he going to work on The Spirit sequels?

Anyone notice in “KICK ASS”, at the beginning of the film the 3 main geeks walk into a theatre that’s playing, “Spirit 3″?

    Don’t let me down, Octopus!

  17. I think it would be awesome to have a SHIELD movie, not that Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos wouldn’t be fun, but SHIELD was always the comic I read feverishly while waiting at Barbershops and what have you. I love the costumes and the exotic weapons they kept pulling out. It was very spacey futuristic stuff!
